tributed to united war fund final touches for lafayette game added at this meeting word has been received that lieutenant john reading schley of the class of 1919 has died of wounds received in an airplane accident while serving in france lieutenant schley was the son of the late steiner schley of fred erick md he was a graduate of frederick college and of mercers burg academy entering lehigh in 1915 he left college in 1917 owing to illness he entered lehigh with an enviable athletic reputation while at mercersburg he was captain of football a member of the track team and a strong swimmer here he was on the freshman relay team he was a member of the sigma phi fraternity in april 1917 lieutenant schley enlisted in the naval re serves and in august of the same year obtained a transfer to avia tion he was graduated in flying at minola long island and was commissioned a first lieutenant military hop saturday under y.m.c.a auspices a football game will be staged on taylor field thanksgiving day at 2.30 p.m betwf^n camp crane and lehigh the proceeds of the game will be contributed to the united war works fund students who are attending the game have paid fifty cents camp crane has a strong team this year though perhaps not as good as last year's team which had 1 a new backfield for each quar ter camp crane had not been de feated until last saturday when the team from wissahickon bar racks cape may won 3-0 camp crane won from muhlenberg 14-0 the lehigh team is in good shape after the lafayette game and it will be able to give a good account of itself . the probable date the reports have not yet been re ceived from camp coppee the offi cers and the downtown men it is expected when all reports have been received including the thanksgiving day game that the amount will exceed 2500 the final touches to shaping for the lafayette football game were applied friday night at a monster smoker held in taylor gym when pep was not only injected into the squad with the rousing cheers and stirring addresses but spirit as well was greatly evident among the student-soldiers responding to the efforts of the cheer leaders the very walls of the sturdy gym nasium quivered as cheer after cheer resounded in the spacious auditorium into every available space with the exception of a small squared arena in the center of the floor were crowded the student soldiers and music to enliven the occasion was liberally furnished by a detachment of the bethehemi steel band the usual distribution of smokes and pipes was hurriedly dispensed and then the students settled down in comfort to enjoy the many numbers presented on the program the absence of mayor arch johnston an alumnus who was slated for an address was deeply regretted opening the program was a wrestling bout between man ley of the lehigh wrestling team and bergdoll of wrestling squad ending in a draw this was fol lowed by an added attraction in the wrestling bout between billy sheridan a former champion now directing athetics at the bethehem steel company plant and lehigh wrestling coach and bevier inter collegiate champion last year for six minutes these two matmen ex pounded the finer points of the art with neither able to accomplish a fall three highly amusing as well as interesting boxing bouts in which one of the opponents went to the mat for the count of nine fol lowed and then the speechmaking began capt van atta was the first of the speakers and although his remarks were brief he thoroughly inspired his audience with the spirit to win coach tom keady made his first address at a smoker for the season and in his re marks dwelt on strongly upholding the standards of lehigh he closed continued on fourth page the details of lehigh s third consecutive victory over lafayette in f ball on downs and hoffman at once punted out of danger to dowd 1 on the 45-yard line savaria made 18 yards through the line but geb hart threw tomlinson for a loss two forward passes by webb failed and on the final down dowd attempted a goal from the field but the ball fell short of the goal-posts lafayette put the ball in play on the 20-yard line hoffman making a 28-yard run around right end le high s line held after this play and hoffman again punted over the goal-line the quarter ended with the ball in lehigh s possession on the 20-yard line score lehigh 0 lafayette 0 second period — savaria made five yards on the first play carry ing the ball to the 25-yard line brown was hurt on the play but remained in the game webb added four more yards through center calvert being hurt on the play and retiring in favor of badham dowd made seven yards around right end and tomlinson hit the line for a first down the first suc cessful forward pass of the game dowd to savaria netted a small gain and another forward webb to saxman advanced the ball to the 20-yard line it looked like a sure touchdown with lehigh gaining at will as webb shot through tackle for 10 yards on the next two pays savaria and tomlinson carried the ball to the three-yard line but on the final down savaria could not gain and lafayette took the ball on downs under the shadow of their goal-posts hoffman essayed to punt out of danger but his effort was weak and lehigh was again continued on third page ball was lost on a grounded for ward pass at this point nolan was substi tuted for dowel who replaced tomlinson at half-back the ball remained in lafayette territory for the rest of he half and when the whistle blew was on our rival's 20-yard line an exchange of punts opened the second half nolan recovered one of hoffman's punts and started down the field for what looked like a touchdown but after advancing 25 yards he was brought down by moore on a penalty la fayette received the ball but it was regained by lehigh two plays later when lehecka fumbled and gold man recovered lehigh carried the ball to lafayette's 35-yard line where nolan's attempt for a field goal missed by a narrow margin from the 20-yard line hoffman kicked to midfield dowd made a running catch on the 45-yard line and dashed straight for the goal the lafayette defense forced him to within a foot of crossing the side line on the right side of the field stopping short dowd cut in toward the other side of the field and finally crossed the goal line for the first score booth kicked the goal the second lehigh touhcdown was gained within two minutes lehigh kicked off to hoffman who immediately attempted a punt which was blocked by booth and recovered by him on lafayette's 7-yard line by four plunges through the line the goal was crossed savaria carrying the ball over booth again kicked the goal instead of weakening after such a set back the lafayette team seemed to become even stronger on the defensive holding well for the rest of the quarter when the third period ended the ball was in lehigh s possession on the maroon and white's 30-yard line it was in the last period that lafayette made her only attempt at offensive play using a peculiar line shift which resulted in a for ward pass formation of the half dozen or more of these plays attempted lafayette was successful only a few times and finally lost the ball on downs on lehigh s 45 yard line on the first play savaria started around right end but instead of making a big swinging circuit cut in sharply although checked several times he rreached the 10 yard line when monroe the laf ayette guard threw himself for ward tackling frcm the rear play was resumed with the ball on laf ayette's 3-yard line again the maroon and white team showed its defensive powers and prevented a score receiving the ball on downs lehecka punted out to savaria and after a 17-yard gain by dowd and several other gains the ball was brought to lafayette's 25 yard line from under the auspices of the y m c a there will be no admission and men in uniform are especially invited to attend each man will be given a card granting him the privilege of iir viting one lady to accompany him to the dance the affair will be brought to a close by 11 oclock sharp good music will be fur nished by a jazz orchestra this is the first dance of the year and it is hoped that several more will be held during the course of the year depending upon the suc cess of the first it was customary in other years for the arcadia to hold these hops but the y m c a will perform the arduous task of arranging this year's entertain ment the association held several suc cessful dances during the summer for the vocational section which were conducted under the same plan that this coming dance will be held lehigh returned victorious after the annual struggle with lafay ette last saturday by a score of 17 0 this marked the third succes sive game won by the brown and white team the victory was well earned and was not unexpected nolan clinched the game for le high when he drop-kicked a field goal from the 22-yard line in the last quarter previous to this score the brown and white team had made two touchdowns both in the third quarter the first came when dowd carried the ball 45 yards through the entire lafayette team following a punt the other touchdown was credited to savaira who plunged over from the 3-yard line after booth had blocked one of hoffman's punts on the 7-yard line booth kicked both goals the day proved an ideal one for such a contest the strong wind had dropped to practically noth ing and overhanging clouds of the early morning had entirely disap peared the air had just enough of a tinge of cold to impart pep to both players and spectators it is inconceivable to lehigh men how lafayette prevented the brown and white from rolling up a score as large as in the previous year with one exception in the last quarter the ball was in lafay ette territory throughout the con test lehigh was superior to the maroon and white in every re spect especially in attack the teams offense admits of no com parison lehigh backs smashed the lafayette line and plunged through for large gains this steady attack carried the ball within the shadow of the goal posts several times — only to he halted when a touchdown seemed certain by the most desperate diefen.se ever seen on march field lafayette's defense was the o»e redeeming fea ture of their game but their offense was pitiably weak lehigh s score does not repre sent the rushing ability of the team in all 220 yards were gained from scrimmage this in cludes two forward passes one of them for 18 yards savaria and webb were used for line plunging and nolan and dowd were em ployed in open field
