form the class of 1920 will publish the epitome as usual this book which all lehigh men know as the annual gotten out each year by the junior class has been issued ever since the early 80 s and the de cision to discontinue publication which was made early in the year under war conditions will not be carried out the epitome is one of the princi pal sources of reference about le high history it contains the records of all the athletic teams class rolls the roll of fraternity and club members and in short an account of every organization and every occurrence of the year there was some thought of is suing the epitome in reduced form and at less expense as a war measure but now that there is no need for such an economy the board of editors is planning to make this year's gook as good as ever but ' ' different ' ' the usual consolidation with the senior class book will probably be made and the two books will be is sued as one volume this has been done every year since 1912 pre vious to this time the senior class book was published as a separate volume a new feature in this year's epitome will be the part devoted to the s a t c this organization which but for the ending of the war would have played a very im portant part in life at lehigh dur ing 1918-19 will be written up and illustrated with numerous photo graphs and snapshots the epitome board is as follows : r b honeyman staff lehigh loses last game camp crane takes thanksgiving day game by 12=0 score with the close of a successful football season all lehigh is look ing toward wrestling for a winter sport the prospects are bright and year should be a successful one there is a good nucleus of last year's team to build this year's team on but at the same 3time candidates are wanted for all classes this is especially true of the 115-pound class there are three beginners out for this class and more competition is needed anybody who can make this weight is urged to come out for he will have as much chance to make the team as the next man this is a good opportunity for ambi tious freshmen to show that they have a little lehigh spirit and judging by the size of their class they ought to have several candi dates out for every weight manager devout urges every one who is interested in wrestling to come out and try whether or not they have any experience in the 125-ponnd class there is bevier 19 inter-collegiate cham pion of last year and last year's captain wuerz 20 of last year's team isi out for the 135-pound class and laeser for the 145 pound elates in the 158 ! pouaid i class there is gaged again for this year he is expected here next week and will then immediately take charge of the candidates manager devout has not yet completed his schedule but he has announced that it is his intention to have an extra long season the first meet will be held the last week of december but no team has been finally picked for opponents the following men re out 115-pound class child 21 hold annual meeting a and b sections of the s a t c are hereby ordered demobil ized and men discharged in accord ance with following procedure demobilization of section b may begin december 2 of section a december 4 medical examina tions will be made by medical offi cer assigned by surgeon general who will arrive not later than de cember 2 preference in order of discharge will be given to men de siring to leaye college discipline and routine must be maintained until actual date of discharge and soldiers impressed with value of receiving excellent character dis charge papers department com manders have been instructed to proceed beginning december 10 with discharge of officers except those expressing wish to remain permanently in service and recom mended by commanding officer this is the gist of a telegram re ceived at headquarters last week from washington which in effect means that the xl s army is slowly receeding from college cam puses throughout the country with the advent of the new year college life in all itsi pre-war phases will have returned whether for better or for worse — who can tell at any rate here are some things relative to the demobilization at lehigh that every man should know : as stated in the telegram sec tion b is to be discharged first be ginning december 2 section a discharges start december 4 al though nothing definite can be pre dicted authorities believe that all men will be mustered out by de cember 10 at the latest equipment everything that has been issued you except 10 d blouse 1 0 d shirt 1 0 d breeches 1 pair leggins \ overcoat 1 hat and underwear must be turned in before you can be mus tered out detail orders concern ing the condition of the rifle and equipment will be issued later the above uniform may be worn four months after date of dis charge when it must be handed in to the nearest quartermaster penalty envelopes wdth a list of the articles retained will be given each soldier and must be returned with the uniform non-commissioned officers will be allowed to wear their chevrons during this period uni forms or parts thereof cannot be bought nor can equipment — every thing must be turned in navy there have been no or ders to discharge the naval unit of the s a t c and it will continue as before sick men in the hospital will be mustered out as soon as they are fit to travel after mustering out men will be entirely out of the service there will be no more drills no more formations here at college pay all men will be paid on and up to the day of their dis charge as yet headquarters have received no information concern ing the extra month's pay it is doubtful if this bonus will be paid s a t c men liberty bonds and insurance each man's liberty bond will be cancelled and the amount already paid in will be returned in the final pay as to government insurance it is to each one's advantage that he keep on with this form of life insurance one need not carry the full 10,000 before yiou stop this insurance look into its advantages — study it and understand it thoroughly and then choose wash ington has sent this letter to all the commanding officers of s a t c units : the following statement has been issued by the secretary of the treasury for the information of soldiers about to be discharged statement by secretary mcadoo " i desire to remind all america's soldiers and sailors that it is their opportunity and their privilege to keep uip their insur ance with the u s government after the war has been officially terminated and even after they have returned to civil life " more than four million offi cers and men of the army and navy are now insured with the u s government through the bureau of war risk insurance of the treasury department the grand total of insurance is more than thirty-six billion dollars • " in its present form this in surance is annual renewable term insurance at net peace rates issued against death and total permanent disability under the provisions of the war risk insurance act every person holding this 1 insurance may keep it up in this form even after he leaves the service for a period of five years all that is necessary is the regular payment of premiums " moreover the law provides that not later than five years after the termination of the war as de clared by presidential proclamation the term insurance shall be con verted without medical examina tion into such form or forms of in surance as may be prescribed by regulations and as the insured may request " in acocrdance with the pro visions of the law these regulations will provide for the right to con vert into ordinary life 20-payment life endowment maturing at age 62 and into other usual forms of in surance this insurance will con tinue to be government insurance the various forms of policies which the bureau of war risk insurance will write are now being prepared " every person in the military or naval service owes it to himself and to his family to hold on to uncle sam's insurance it is the strongest safest and cheapest life insurance ever written just as this insurance relieved our sailors and soldiers of anxiety and mis givings for the welfare of their loved ones and protected them against the hazards of war so it will continue to protect them through the days of readjustment and reconstruction and in the time of peace " the advantages of keeping this insurance in force cannot be emphasized too strongly the right to continue it is a valuable right given by the government to our fighting part of the men as compensation for their services if this right is lost by allowing in surance to lapse it can never be re gained when government insur continued on third page at a meeting of the student body in the gymnasium on mkm day night announcement was made of the action taken by the faculty monday afternoon dr emery read the minutes as adopted by the faculty dr drinker then spoke on the faculty's action he stated that a meeting would be held saturday at 2 p.m in drown hall in refer ence to the housing situation he said that the university official were giving consideration to the plan of establishing a r 0 t c unit at lehigh however details of this would be announced later the arrangements which the gov ernment will mak concerning the tuition for the rest of the year are not known following dr drinker captain van atta spoke on the war risk insurance the details of which appear in another column action op the faculty , in view of the pending de mobilization of the s a tv c the faculty of the university has postponed the end of the first term to february 26 1919 final examinations will begin at 8 a.m thursday february 20 the un usual situation caused by the war department schedules and the influenza has affected col legiate work in such a way as to make the results from the begin ning of the term to date unsatis factory from the standpoint of students and faculty alike the scholastic problem facing the university is the return to normal schedules in the expecta tion of preparing students by the end of the second term so that they may suffer as little loss edu cationally as possible during the scholastic year 1918-19 in order to solve this problem the faculty will need the hearty co-operation of the entire student body such co-operation on the part of the students can be most effectively rendered by diligent and consist ent application on the part of the individual student to his college work for the remainder of the scholastic year the faculty on its part will do anything in its power to arrange rosters create extra classes or sections labora tory periods etc provide for re views if necessary for the pur pose of bringing about the desired result at the mid-year examinations due consideration will be given to the difficulties under which the student body has labored a stu dent will be allowed to continue after the mid-year examinations to the end of the scholastic year if the faculty is convinced that he can do so with profit evidence of a determined effort on the part of the individual student to do good work for the remainder of this term will greatly influence the faculty's decision the christmas holidays will be gin on friday december 20 at 6 p.m and end on monday january 6 1919 at 7 45 a m the second term will end on saturday june 28 1919 taylor field saw its last football game of the season on thanksgiv ing day when lehigh was de feated by camp crane by a score of 12 to 0 in the downpour of rain merely a handful of spectators watched the patched up team of lehigh put up a creditable fight until the last whistle blew our half of the gate receipts went to the united war work fund for which we are hoping to raise ten thousand dollars camp crane's share of the receipts go to the athletic fund that is giving recreation to the allentown soldiers the only two touchdowns scored were annexed by the camp crane men one coming after mchugh a member of glenn warner's last year's pittsburgh squad skirted around the ends for substantial gains and then when the ball was advanced to lehigh s five-yard line again chose an end run to plant the ball behind the goal line dvorak the visitors quarterback regis tered the final score by intercept ing a forward pass on their 25 yard line and shaking himself free running for a touchdown owing to webb's absence on continued on fourth page oin friday evening december 6 the lehigh club of new york will have a victory dinner at the machinery club those in at tendance besides hearing the best music that can be secured will also hear several entertaining speakers john l stewart professor of economics and history at lehigh will speak on our oportunity during the reconstruction per iod dr h s drinker 71 and w r okeson 96 will speak on what lehigh has been doing in the war capt c j lonergan of the second east surrey regiment wil give a real a,nd lively war talk continued on third page from the standpoint of games won and lost the itemgh 1918 foot ball season was one of the poor est in yeans with only three vic tories out of tire steven igamels 1 played but from the standpoint of the lafayette game which in the final analysis is the criterion as to the success or failure of a lehigh football team the 17-0 vic tory on march field puts the sea son of 1918 among the successes from an artistic point of view the present season has been a big disappointment to local football fans as the adverse conditions pre vented the playing of two of the biggest college games of the year on taylor field the pittsburgh game and the rutgers game the difficulties encotmtered by the management are well-shown by the fact that only three of the game were played as originally sched uled and that three service games were played to complete the sched ule at the beginning of the season o-lli-j iivt ox ittjsl jf\ya>l & jj julct-l were in college and about this 1 nucleus coach heady was forced to build his team in the face of the most adverse conditions that lehigh hasi met with in majny years wysocki savaria booth spagna and saxman formed the nucleus of the team and played in every game of the season ex cept that captain wysocki was lost to the team for the season as a result of a broken arm in the perm state game added strength was given to the line by the eligibility of hatten and calvert a sterling pair of guards from the vocation al section of the s a t c of the men playing their first year of varsity football at le high dlowd and webb stood out as the leaders dowd led the team in scoring with six touchdowns and a field goal for a total of 39 points and in every game showed his great ability as an open-field runner webb was lost to the team during the early part of the season due to an attack of span ish influenza but on recovering he took wysocki s place at full-back and showed punting and line plunginig ability whjichi afesureid him a place on the viarsity while football practice started with the opening of college on september 12 it was not until a month later that the first game was played all attempts to ob tain an opponert for september 28 the scheduled opening date were unsuccessful and the ursinus game scheduled for october 5 was called off on account of the influ enza epidemic on october 12 the team was scheduled to journey to pittsburgh and clash with car negie tech but the military au thorities and the influenza com bined to cancel this game in its place a game was played on tay lor field with by dickson's league island marines which re sulted in a 6-0 victory for the brown and white the notable feature 1 of this game was that it was played behind closed gates and only the student body was ad mitted because of the ravages of the brown and
