officers on thursday january 16 in packer hall presi dent glen called the meeting to order and announced that the pur pose of the meeting was to elect a manager of the freshman basket ball team the following men were named as candidates 1 : altmiller green brumbaugh and o'keefe the vote was taken by ballot at once and altmiller was elected the next thing discussed was the question of the class dues these were set at 1.50 president glen then announced that a committee would draw up the constitution immediately and would submit it for ratification at the next meeting inkwell club holds meeting his speech was in part as fol lows : the regular sunday evening y m c a meeting held in drown hall january 13 was well at tended lieutenant paul reichel of camp hancock ga and for merly lieutenant in a machine gun corps was the speaker of the even ing he took as his topic unity from the american viewpoint his speech was interesting because of the unique view he took on the subject continued on second page this is the first semester in prac tically two years that the under graduate body of the colleges of the united states has been able to breathe easier the first two years of the war drew but little of our vital interest and attention how ever as the struggle continued and the united states entered the con flict the collegiate body together with the rest of the country be rev dr charles smith of n.y impresses large assemblage with personal experiences cash prizes for y.m.c.a essays of the contest symphony orchestra gives concert in a basketball game that showed plenty of the old-time rivalry le high lost to lafayette by a 27-23 score at easton saturday night from the first blast of the referee s whistle until the end the game was marked with all the speed and fight that is characteristic of a le high-lafayette contest the lehigh team due to its system and team-work played ex ceptionally well in the first period and a large part of the time the ball was around lafayette's goal tallin's ability to shoot won le high two goals from the floor which w r ere immediately duplicated by bieber and bobbe of lafayette with the result that the first half ended with the*score only 13-11 in favor of the opponents in the second period the lafa yette quintet began to mofc mp and the game became rougher with quite a few falls to add to the ex citement lehigh got two more goals from the floor and lafayette got five nevertheless the playing w r as close and it was only due to their fast individual playing that the opponents finally won with the score of 27-23 during the game a large number of fouls were made mostly for holding and running with the ball and the total of the points scored in this way was large the brown and white team was seriously weakened by the loss of captain wysocki who was unable to play on account of his arm in jured during the football season a peculiarity of the game was the fact that no substitutions were made on either team soccer practice delayed due to condition of field speaking before the mechanical engineering society last thursday evening in williams hall h t morris 91 told of the making of heavy armor plate mr morris who is superintendent of the ar mor plant of the bethlehem steel co has had many years of experi ence along this line of steel manu facture more than sixty members of the m.e society attended this meeting which was the first one of the collegiate year which the so ciety has held the other speaker of the evening was lieut w f diefenderfer 19 who gave a technical description of the method of aiming artillery pieces mr morris brought with him many specimens as well as blue prints and photographs with which he illustrated his talk he com menced with a brief description of the ; nuking of iron in the blast fur nace the further refining process of the converter and the open hearth for the manufacture of steel this process is practically the same for all the steel made but it is from the pouring into the in got and the further operations that the manufacture is divided into special groups such as rail making and structural steel ordnance and armor plate manufacture soon after the steel had been poured into the ingot mould solidi fication of the outer surface occurs which establishes a fixed envelope for the molten steel within as this inner part cools it shrinks and causes the typical pipe found in both ends of all steel ingots pipe occurs in the ends of the ingots as an irregular depression often reaching far into the ingot and it derives its name probably from the fact that when an ingot goes through the rolls in the bloom ing mills this flaw is stretched out to a great length and appears as a pipe-like hollow space running lengthwise with the ingot another peculiarity of ingot which has to be met is what is called segregation drillings in an ingot show a varying and in creased carbon content in the part which cooled last which part sur rounds the pipe there is also a higher percentage content of sul phur and phosphorus at this place in the ingot such a segregation is due to these elements being thrown out of solution by the solidifying metal and being concentrated in the part last to cool for armor plate very large in gots are necessary these are made in special molds which artificially cause the pipe to occur in a pro jection at the top this projection is used to hold the ingot when it is to eliminate the pipe and the secregation steel from entering into the finished product it is necessary to cut off from 9 to 25 of the top of the ingot and discard it and for the gun and armor plate steel up to 30 is discarded this is one of the reasons for the high cost of armor plate continued on third page best 1000=word composition to command 300 zwemer f r g s of cairo university the concert given by the beth lehem symphony orchestra at the high school on sunday afternoon was one of the best of its kind that has been rendered in this commu nity during the season the program was composed of works ofithe'comparatively modern french composers the main work presented by the orchestra was saint saens from the new world symphony the second set of pieces rendered by the orchesstra consisted of three light pieces by e granados percy a grainger and e wolf ferrari the closing orchestra selection was a rendition of prof weingartner's guards both the upper and lower fields have been so soft and muddy since the beginning of the warm spell that soccer practice has been almost impossible however about twenty men answered man ager estes call for candidates last mlonday and e gonzales 20 of last year's team was put in charge of the squad on monday and tuesday the field was frozen hard and the candidates were run through a snappy drill in the rudi ments of the game but by wed nesday the field had thawed till it was a veritable sea of slime fur ther practice was postponed until the field becomes fit for use again taylor gym is to be the scene of a dual meet wednesday evening when lehigh and moravian col lege match basketball teams at 7.15 o'clock immediately after the cage game grapplers from the allentown y m c a will wrestle the brown and white mat artists in the opening meet of the season wrestling lehigh opens her wrestling season wednesday jan 22 8 15 p.m in taylor gym with a com bat with allentown y m c.'a the prospects for lehigh s wrestling team this year seem better than ever with three of last year's varsity on the present team and with several new stars lehigh seems likely to uphold her name in this sport i the lehigh line-up will not however be entirely as expected it is still undecided as to who will represent lehigh in tlhe 125-pound class but in all probability it will be w f myers 21 since ken bevier intercollegiate champion of the 125-poumd class is tempo rarily disqualified for scholastic reasons owing to the fact that there will be no heavy weight class in the allentown meet there will be two 135-pounders 6 w wuerz 20 and j bertholet 21 will wrestle in this class the 115-pound event will be taken care of by g l childs who was victorious over h bull in the finals last wednesday stated that the people of paris had lotst apparently all fear of the air raids for they took the philosophical way of looking at conditions as they presented themselves from day to day they felt that they were no better than the men who gave their lives on the battlefield and if they were killed through air raids it did not matter while in france the speaker and his party were taken care of by the military they were told that they were now mobilized by the french and that they had to 1 obey military orders they wetre shown every courtesy but they dr smith left in the middle of october and returned nine weeks later in december in crossing the atlantic the crew and pass engers were continually on the alert for submarines only oncewas an object sighted that had the ap pearance of a periscope at long range but which turned out to be only a barred floating on the water after nine days the vessel landed in france dr smith here called attention to the wonderful work of the american engineers in pro viding three principal docks where american troops and supplies were landed when the party reached paris that city was in total darkness a safeguard against bombing of the city by enemy aero planes the destructive effects of the big bertha on paris caused all the men women and children not needed in carrying on essential work in prosecuting the war to be removed from the city to places of safety the meeting 1 of the club was well attended among those present were dr drinker dr emery and the rev mr harry of philadelphia each of whom made brief remarks to the ink well club members a most fascinating and vivid narrative of famous events of the world war was presented on fri day 1 night to the inkwell lu theran club the speaker was the rev dr charles smith of new york
