mistakes university dance lehigh lost what may prove to have been her hardest basketball game saturday afternoon when perm state won out in the last minute by a 26-23 score from the start of the game le high played like a true lehigh team every man being at his best and on his toes every minute the game was fast and hard fought lehigh drew first blood when straub after a snappy bit of pass work dropped in a pretty field goal which he followed closely by one from the foul line the foul ing on both teams was very fre quent but state held the odds this was due to the strictness of the referee who never seemed to miss a thing but at that the play was continually fast both teams played a very cautious game this being true to au.-eh an extent in he first half that they seemed slightly over-cautious the score at the end of the half stood 9-9 state took the aggressive with the beginning of play in the second half and in a short time had a three point lead before lehigh had scored lehigh started going when donovan brought our score within a point of theirs by a well-earned basket straub evened it with a foul and donovan put us ahead with a pretty shot from the center of the floor lehigh held this slight lead up to the last minute of play the game appeared to have been decided when there were only two minutes to play and lehigh held a three-point lead killinger of state near louisville ky ha been invited by the commandant colonel a h carter to become registrar of the new basic school of the field artil lery educational system into whicih the present school is shortly to be transformed captain walters has declined and will return to bethlehem with mrs walters and their two sons on february 17 to resume his duties at lehigh uni versity wheire he has been regis trar and assistant professor of english during the past several weeks captain walters upon invitation addressed the 1200 students of the louisville boys high school and gave talks on the work of dr j fred wolle and the betmlehetm bach choir before three educar tional and musical clubs in louis ville j s grande consulting en gineer of the barrett construction company gave two very interest ing and instructive illustrated lec tures to the members of thfe civil and naval engineering courses last friday afternoon janua;ry 31 iat 2 p.m in the physics lecture room amd saturday morning february 1 at 10 a.m at the orpheum theatre on friday afternoon mjr gran dell gave a lecture on ' ' road con struction with the use of brick stone and wood blocks he showed slides of different types of roads and their uses and showed examples of those which were suc cessful and those which failed and explained the reason for their fail ure on saturday morning he gave a lecture on the building of the army cantonments at camp upton yaphaok l 1 and camip devens mass and explained the great part which speedily and yet well built roads played in helping uncle sam train soldiers quickly his lecture was in part as fol lows after war was declared it was decided to build two canton ments which was later changed to sixteen the cantonmentis were to be built at devens mass and yaphank l 1 and were to be large enough to accommodate 40 000 men each ; they were to t>e fin ished in 90 days this included clearing the ground laying roads erecting the buildings and furnish ing them both with heat and light oamp upton was built in a wil derness 70 miles from new york on long island the first thing was to clear the ground and re move the stumps by hitching them to steam rollers immediately the roads were started so as to make it possible to bring in the materials for building the barrett com pany took the contract for the road building at both devens and up ton and showed an example of quick but still successful road building a great amount of trouble was had with thei laborers ; they would not stay on account of the bad working conditions poor food and poor sleeping quarters large barracks and restaurants were built — all mosquito proof — and thus afforded better food al lowing all the men to eat in a short time and afforded better sleeping quarters the lumber used in the building of these camps was enormous the lumber used at camp devens alone if sawed into boards 1 inch wide and 1 inch thick would reach around the united states at camp devens the road to the town wais immediately built to al low the men to live in the town and travel back and forth the town paid 5000 of the 40,000 total cost in building the road as the town people all made a great amount of money on the business whicih the camp naturally brought along with in building the roads the stumps continued on third page the university dance given sat urday evening in drown hall was attended by one of the largest crowds ever accommodated on the floor out of town visitors were greatly in evidence although the event was well attended by the student body and the younger set of bethlehem music was furnished by lanin's orchestra of philadelphia the program running 1 from 8 30 until 12:00 the preliminary tryouts for the navy wrestling meet were held thursday january 31 twenty seven men reported for the tryouts the material present was very good and in some of the classes the bouts were very closely contested ken bevier who was disquali fied for the allentown meet for scholarship reasons is back on the mat again and will represent le high in the 125-pound class in the 115-pound class grubbs threw streeter and childs won from craig the final was won by childs who threw grubbs in a hotly contested bout lasting four minutes goodwin 125-pound class lost to naame and myers to bevier in the prelims naame then met bevier but was thrown in seven minutes in the 135-pound class bertolet won from reinhardt van nort from whins and locke from wal lace van nort lost to bertolet and bertolet then threw locke locke wrestled well but lacks the experi ence of bertolet the prelims in 145-weight were won by loeser coxe and wright hollinshead who wrestled in the allentown meet was unable to try out due to a bad shoulder loeser who threw coxe and wright will wrestle in the navy meet the 158-pound class was very closely contested and promises to be one of great interest this year in the prelims j bergdoll lost to badham and roy to f bergdoll badham then won from f berg doll in the enginering society first meeting of the year in williams hall last thursday even dr drinker made a short speech on his experiences as a student in the mining enginering course which were were very interesting he also made a few remarks on the value of a college education and the opportunities lehigh offered to the undergraduate body his talk on the value of a college education was especially valuable because of his viewpoint and the vast knowledge he has along collegiate educational lines r cory 20 who had spent one year in italy with the italian army and six months in france with the french army told of the army life as he found it in france and italy he fought in the battle of the piave which was the turning point of the war between austria and italy the italians were the vic tors he claims because of their superiority in artillery and their reorganized condition after their main retreat from the austrian alps the austrian took a large number of prisoners but it was on the river piave that the italians took their first stand and won thus the battle of the piave was to italy as the first and second battles of the marne were to france everywhere he said he found the v
