by-products are very valuable and form a large separate industry pittsburgh has not been de feated in football for the past two years the third consecutive year that freshmen have won most founder's day sports next thursday evening at 8 o'clock mr harlan s miner 88 will address the chemical society in the chemistry lecture room mr miner is head chemist at the plant of the welsbach co at gloucester n j he is only able to return to lehigh once in several years and the opportunity to hear his address is an excellent one the welsbach company is the largest plant manufacturing gas mantles in this country it em ploys some three thousand persons in the main plant and turns out an enormous quantity of mantles thirty miles of thread are used each day in weaving the mantles the actual making of the mantle is basicly chemical for it depends upon the saturation of the fabric with the proper solutions the ob taining of the rare earths used for these solutions is a problem for the miner and metallurgist gas lighting which is electricity's one great rival is a problem for the electrical engineer mr miner's talk will touch upon all these phases of the question it will be illustrated by stereopticon slides and by specially made samples of mantles men of all courses are invited to attend this meeting as guests of the chemical society the free evening school for for eigners conducted by the bethle hem steel company with the j3o operation of the lehigh university y m c a opened last night with a very large and encouraging en rollment of men who desire to learn english and become americanized the school will be organized this year on a much larger scale than ever before attempted and the de partment of safety and welfare at the steel works will devote cn siderable attention to its successful management on last thursday afternoon a meeting of the teachers was held at the bethlehem steel company's office at which the plan for this year's work was outlined and some of the details explained for the benefit of the new men mr mulligan of the safety and welfare department opened the meeting with a short talk on the necessity of such work and the benefits derived from it by all con cerned he said in part the question of our foreign population is of very great im portance and the situation is be coming more accute every day this is indicated by the fact that the united states government has taken up the problem of the amcri continued on second page tennis tournament nearing completion mechanical society elects new officers tomorrow afternoon at forbes field pittsburgh pa the lehigh football team lines up against the university of pittsburgh pitt has played two games thus far win ning both west virginia was de featedl 14-0 last saturday pitt beat bethany 40-0 this is prob ably lehigh s hardest game this year considering the strength of the various teams lehigh is 1 to meet pittsburgh has had exceptional football teams for the past three years and has been undefeated for two years the last time pitt was beaten was in the 1914 season when it was defeated by washing ton and 1 jefferson 13-0 in its last game of the year during 1915 and 1916 with glenn warner as coach pittsburgh has defeated cornell university of pennsyl vania washington & jefferson perm state the lehigh team has been greatly strengthened by the return of w d quarterback mccarthy who sprained his ankle in the seventh infantry game will not get in the game the line is the same as that which faced ursinus the first regular meeting of the mechanical engineering society was held in williams hall monday evening october bth in the ab sence of officers the honorary chairman prof deschweinitz presided as the election of officers in may was not at a place in the semi-finals and johnson will play some very fast and interesting tennis has been seen throughont the tournament though play has been handicapped by inclement weather with entry into the semi finals round the play will be of very classic and fast character and doubtless many sets will not be de cided without extra sets the semi-finals and finals will be played on the university courts facing the physics building and will be for the best three out of five sets chinese club banquet the following freshmen will re port to the hazing committee wednesday october 17 at 2.30 p.m in drown of inspec tion through the lehigh coke works at hellertown several of the faculty and members of other courses accompanied the chemists the coke industry is nearly as important and as interesting as the neighboring steel industry cer tainly they are mutually de pendent the lehigh coke works is es sentially german in arrangement in the original plant there were four batteries of ovens with 75 ovens each now there are four batteries of 104 ovens the coal which is used for coking is a mixture of three grades of bituminous coal which comes from the northeastern part of west vir ginia these three grades are known as elkins thomas and davis by mixing these coals in the proper proportion a mixture is obtained which does not swell or contract after it is put into the oven as the freight cars of coal come from the mine they are run into a shed which is called a warming shed it is heated fey gas the ob ject being to thaw out the coal in freezing weather to facilitate dumping from the warming shed a donkey engine pushes the cars up an incline to the tipple here the car is picked up bodily and the coal dumped into the proper bin from these great bins run three belt conveyors one for each grade of fuel there is a continual stream of the coal up the long belts which dump it into the bradford breakers here it is tossed and tumbled in a huge revolving cylin der until fine enough to pass through the holes in the breaker then it drops to a hammer mill where it is reduced to the proper fineness up to this point the various grades have been kept sepa rate now the crushed coal drops on a revolving plate a steel knife projects over the edge of the plate peeling off coal as the plate rotates by setting the angle of this knife any amount of coal may be peeled off and in this way the three grades are mixed in the proper propor tion again the mixed coal travels up a long conveyor and finally into a bin located on top of the coke ovens on top of the ovens and passing under the bin is a larry car which receives its charge of twelve tons from the overhead bin travels along over the tops of the ovens to the one which is to be charged the lids are removed and the coal drops into the hot oven continued on sixth page the heat is supplied by a gas jet which burns in a space between the ovens similar in principle to the women's club meeting the chinese students club held a banquet in the eagle hotel last wednesday evening at eight o'clock to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the chinese repub lic the banquet hall was decor ated with chinese and american flags all the by winning two out of the three contests in the annual founder's day sports the foot ball game was won by the sopho mores by a 7-0 score and the relay race went to the freshmen in the time of three minutes and fifty four seconds so that the baseball game proved to be the deciding factor in determining the winner of the sports and also whether the freshmen should be permitted to discard their class caps on sun days the baseball game resulted in a 6-1 victory for the freshmen in a game which was held to five in nings due to the late hour at which it was started the freshmen by winning the sports this year made it three successive years in which the first year men have won the majority of the sports football game the sports were opened with the playing of the football game on the lower field the sophomores kicked off to open the game and then fol lowed several exchanges of punts as neither team was able to gain much ground through the line neither team threatened to score during the first period the quarter ending with the ball in the pos session of the sophomores near the center of the field during the second quarter the play remained near the center of the field until near the end of the period when on a series of line plunges and a well executed forward pass the freshmen advanced the ball to the 15-yard line only to have the period end before any scoring could be done the freshmen outplayed the sophomores during the first half as they were able to gain more consistently and played together somewhat more smoothly the second half began with the freshmen kicking off the sopho mores were soon forced to punt after which the freshmen ad vanced the ball from their 40-yard line to the 12-yard line where they were held ! for downs the fresh men soon after recovered a fumble but were again held for downs when the sophomore line held like 9 stone wall on the five-yard line gonzales punted from behind his goal line after which hess at tempted a field goal for the fresh men from the 20-yard line but failed the quarter ended with the ball in the freshmen's possession on the 33-yard line soon after the beginning of the last period carpenter the fresh man half back fumbled and knerr recovered the ball and dashed 70 yards for a touchdown g-onzales kicked the goal the freshmen tried desperately to tie the score during the remainder of the period but when the whistle blew 1 for the end of the game the score was still 7-0 in favor of the soplromores the line-up and summary : freshmen positions sophs harris l.e bellman continued on fifth page the lehigh
