coffin 19 having defeated a l purple survives in the lower bracket the scores of the coffin-purple match were 6-3 6-2 6-1 and those of the warner-ijohnson match 2-6 4-6 6-2 7-5 6-2 both matches were fast hard played and interest ing although the johnson-warner match was the most closely con tested the players more evenly matched the match going to the fifth set befre the decision was reached in both cases the winners depended upon a steady placing game opposed by he more cutting and speedy games of johnson and purple both warner and coffin use a lofard stroke which they handle to perfection from the back of the court and which they are able to place without the reach of their opponents in his match with coffin purple seemed unable to keep control of the ball losing many points on outs johnson played a hard lofard drive which has been the downfall of many an other player but warner played them back with a precision which is to be commented upon the wind blowing at the time of the match hindered both players to some extent the final round will be played during the coming week as both coffin and warner are the same type of player the result of the match will depend upon the mastery of the respective players of the form of play they use at any rate the match will be closely con tested and fine tennis will be dis played the winner of the final round gains the title of college champion for the year and the winner is awardel with a trophy cheer leaders may accompany the team it has been suggested that the athletic committee pay the ex penses of two cheer leaders on foot ball trips when there are at least fifty rooters accompaning the team the supporters of this plan say that the expense will be repaid by the benefits to the team the two cheer leaders who can persuade the greatest number to accompany the team are to make the trip this adds some useful competition and assures the greatest number of rooters attending the foreign games the athletic committee is to act upon this matter in the near future it is likely that a favorable decision will be made especially because it is desirable to have a large number of loyal supporters of the team at the state game representatives of all the fra ternities dormitory sections and town men will meet wednesday evening at 7.30 in drown hall to discuss the method by which the discussion groups are to be con ducted this year last year the discussion groups proved a great success and it is expected that this year's results will be even better complete plans for the groups have been worked out by a com mittee of which prof palmer is chairman aided by j m frey secretary of the y m c a and rev a d thaeler these plans will be ratified by the meeting wednesday night if they are ac ceptable and will then go into ecect the plan as at present consti tuted calls for a division of the work into two parts the first will deal with comparative religion while the second will deal with the life of christ further details concerning the plans will be given out following their ratification at the meeting wednesday evening y m c a speaker for next sunday first college dance about fifty couples attended the first university dance of this year which was held saturday evening in drown hall the music was furnished by the university of california jazz band the members of the band are stationed in allentown with the ambulance corps the music was exceptionally good and the evening was greatly enjoyed by those who attended the georgetown smoker held last friday evening under the di rection of the y m c a was well attended and there is no doubt that much of the spirit displayed in the stands on saturday was due to the enthusiasm and pep of the speakers president alden of the y m c a introduced the speakers the first was ernest m smith of the university of california who is now with the ambulance corps in allentown he told of having seen sawtelle 17 wrestle in the national championship in cali fornia and praised the plucky fight which the latter put up in the finals sawtelle wrestled a former champion and lost the bout on de cision the referee stating that he decided in favor of the former champion because he disliked to change the title on so close a match smith said he had found since com ing east that sawtelle s spirit was the spirit of lehigh and that if fully aroused it would go far to wards gaining the victory over georgetown reverend mr robinson next spoke in behalf of the townspeople he first emphasized the value of the y m c a in any college he said : ' ' the heart and soul ought to develop with the head the y m c a is the institution here to de velop you spiritually it teaches the ideal character of christ the spirit of service for some one else that same spirit which is leading smith and saunders and the others to the trenches in europe he spoke of the georgetown game and said that he who quit yelling when the team was losing was a slacker his parting advice was root till the last whistle blows ' ' the next speaker was anthony saunders soccer player and soldier who is managing the soccer team of the ambulance corps which ex pects to beat the bethlehem aggre gation although a champion soccer player saunders made haste to explain that he was not a cham pion speaker he told of how the all-holland team in a game with the all-english team in 1906 braced up in the last fifteen minutes of the game and scored two points thus saving themselves from the dishonor of being blanked it illustrated his point that concen trated and determined effort will often accomplish much both on the athletic field and in the stands a very fast and interesting bout between burgess 19 and wuerz 20 was declared a draw by billy sheridan both men showed great agility and skill in working out of tight places as well as splendid ag gressiveness and should make good material for this year's team billy sheridan advised the stu dent body to get behind the team and yell at practice as well as at games he predicted a successful season if the student body will stay with the team bosey next orated in his usual inspiring manner he said this was a very critical time in the world's history the three great continued on fifth page at the 6.15 meeting of the y m c a next sunday the speaker will be c h dreshman of harris burg pa mr dreshman is con nected with the state association he spoke at the gettysburg camp this summer at mount gretna and other army camps he is a fine character a forceful and con vincing speaker who goes right to the point and he is sure to have an interesting message a large number of the members of the chemical society and also many students from other courses enjoyed a rare treat last thursday evening october 18 when h s miner 8.5 88 chief chemist of the welsbach light co addressed the meeting on the subject of the gas mantle industry ' ' mr miner was employed by the welsbach company immediately after his graduation and thus has been con nected with the incandescent gas lighting industry almost since its infancy he explained fully with the aid of stereoptican slides the occurence and mining | min erals containing the rare earth metals which are used in the gas mantle industry mr miner also gave the history of the incandescent gas lamp and showed by using different burners the effect of varying the proportions of the rare earths used in making the mantle the substance of his address fol lows the history of the development of incandescent gas lighting is very closely associated with the chem istry of the rare earths the word rare at first signified scarcity but as time went on and members of the group were found scattered quite generally over the earth the term rare earths became a chem ical classification and the original meaning was lost the rare earths of most importance in the gas mantle industry are cerium and thorium which are usually found together in nature this group oc curs in many minerals there being at least one hundred which contain these elements in greater or less percentage cerite and allanite are rare earth metals which are not found in commercial quantities in this country in this connection mention might be made of thori anite a mineral which contains thorium and uranium it is sup posed to be the oldest known min eral and its age has been estimated from its radio-active power to be 2,200,000,000 years monzite sand is the commercial mineral from which cerium and thoriumi are obtained it contains among other constituents thirty percent of cerium oxide and five percent of thorium oxide monazite sand is made up of a large number of crystals the perfection of which depends on the distance the mineral has removed from the original rock it results from the decomposition of granite by natural forces and the concentration of the heavier particles by the action of wind and water monazite sand is found widely scattered but the only work able deposits are in north and south carolina brazil india and australia the carolina deposits are found in the stream beds 1 of old mountain districts but in brazil the deposits are beach sands continued on fifth page the carolina deposits cover 3500 square miles the gravels in the bottoms of the stream's are rich in monazite which is obtained from these gravels by ordinary placer mining the gravel is placed in a sluice box and the lighter material the varsity met their first home defeat of the season at the hands of the speedy eleven of georgetown university last saturday afternoon on taylor field before a large and enthusiastic crowd of several thousand the brown and white team's failure to break up the visi tors plays in the first half was primarily the cause of the defeat had they exhibited the brand of playing displayed in the second half of the game there would no doubt have been a different story to tell the chief weakness on lehigh's part seemed to be the inability to tackle surely and many times the visitors star half backs gilroy and mcquade were able to gain first downs owing to this weakness the visitors cross buck plays featuring mcquade and gilroy were their chief sources of gain in the first half and comparatively little ground was made through line plunges in the second half lehigh took a sudden brace and played the visitors to a standstill to the end of the game although only able to cross georgetown's goal line once this being a pretty forward pass by halsted to her rington who fell over the line for lehigh's lone tally halsted fail ing to kick goal the game although a hard one to lose was lost to a team which is one of the best seen here in several years and which with its stellar backfield and heavy line is no doubt one of the strongest collegi ate teams in the bast this season gilroy last year's all american choice is a backfield player pos sessed of wonderful speed and is an exceedingly difficult man to tackle while mcquade and cody also played a game almost on a par with that of gilroy on the other hand the lehigh team displayed its true calibre in the way in which it staged its strong come back in the second half although a little weak on the defensive at times the playing of the team was exceedingly im proved over that displayed in pre vious games and it is needless to say that by the time of the lafa yette game the eleven will no doubt be up to the standard of the past few years halsted kicked off to george town to start the game and cody carried the ball to the 45-yard line before being downed a series of line plunges and end runs on criss cross plays brought the ball to the 30-yard line where the visitors were held for downs after a little success in gaining ground her rington punted to georgetown on the 35-yard line again the visi tors worked a series of cross bucks for substantial gains and then a forward from gilroy to mcquade scored the first touchdown gilroy easily kicked goal herrington was shifted to quar terback for nolan and lind was substituted for herrington at half back near the end of the quarter score : georgetown 7 ; lehigh 0 the second quarter started with continued on ftpth page bethlehem pa tuesday
