tennis tournament r r coffin 19 on sunday gained the title of college champion for the year the match went to five sets and the scores were 6-3 5-7 1-6 7-5 6-4 the contest from start to finish was fast and closely played both con testants depended on a steady placing game rather than a slash ing game each used a long slow loford to advantage though coffin depended at times upon playing the ball at the net the tournament conducted this year was one of the most successful since tennis has been instituted as a sport in the university while no dope was 1 upset all the mem bers of last spring s team surviving until the semi-final round many closely contested matches were played throughout the tournament not only have the tennis 1 champion aspirants of the three upper classes shown marked improvement dur ing the summer but several mem bers of the 1921 class who until this time have not been seen in college tennis acquitted themselves credit ably freshmen tie allentown prep in football game there will be a special college meeting wednesday morning at 11.30 in packer chapel to take up and consider the question of le high joining in the college move ment to forward the students friendship war fund to be used for relief work in the present war the university authorities have ar ranged to have all classes terminate at 11.30 on wednesday so that all the students may be free to attend the meeting two splendid speakers have been obtained to address the student body on the subject of the work and needs among the enlisted men of the armies and navies 1 and also among the men in the prison camps in europe mr george irving of new york editor of the north american student and chairman of the war fund committee will be one of the speakers he is a graduate of mcgill university and has met with much success in this work at other colleges the other speaker will be mr kenneth hamilton who has been in active service in y m c a work among the prison camps in europe and is now in this country on a furlough no direct appeal for funds will be made at the meeting as the sole purpose of the meeting is to give the . students an idea of just what the conditions in europe are at this time later on an active campaign to aid the cause may be carried on art the university but this will not be started at the meeting on wed nesday lehigh wins opening cross country meet the freshman football team played a scoreless tie saturday afternoon on muhlenberg field with the allentown prep team it wasi a well-played contest as the teams were very evenly matched although the freshmen outweighed their opponents by a few pound's hess walmsley and mellinger starred for the freshmen the line-up and summary are as follows : prep positions freshmen hughes l.e harris ross l.t stickney of spirit over body mr dreshman s address was in part as follows : the wisest man knows but an infinitesimal part of the total knowledge of the world and no man however wise therefore should permit conceit to enter his heart a man in this frame of mind is not in a receptive attitude to learn to know god a former princeton professor a successful attorney who traveled all over the world once stid in the privacy of his office dreshman i have come to the point where i don't know whether there is a god or not it seemed incredible that a man of his education and experi ence could doubt the existence of god the trouble wasi that his knowledge had made him egotisti cal and since he had tried to live without god deeming himself self sufficient he had finally lost all contact with him in psychology we learn that personality is made up largely of emotion and will emotion is the spark of god in us the great thing in our lives god made it possible to sin so that we could exercise our wills in controlling our animal bodies by thinking god's thoughts the mind and spirit are developed if we don't think high and noble thoughts that power of the mind and spirit becomes subject to those lawer experiences of our animal natures god made us to be masters of our lives but in many cases our lives have mastered us while we can rise to heights far above the animal world by the development of our souls he who lets his animal nature gain the ascendancy sinks to depths which no animal ever reaches there are many great men whose souls were overpowered by their animal bodies but they are great in history only the really great men who have moved the world upward are those who hadi the courage of god in their lives continued on fifth page ' ' when a man realizes that he must harmonize with god then peace comes to him when he can say with the help of god i am the master ' then he can get a rich depth of meaning out of the sci lehigh had little difficulty in de feating lebanon valley in their annual gridiron contest saturday afternoon on taylor field by a score of 33-7 the easy victory for the brown and white was a pleas ant surprise for the lehigh rooters as a hard battle was expected judg ing from last year's 3-3 tie lehigh showed its best offensive play of the season and completely outplayed their opponents except for a short time at the beginning of the third quarter when lebanon valley made their lone score on a well executed forward pass lehigh did most of its scoring in the first half savaria crossing the line twice for a touchdown in the first period on straight football while in the second quarter young recovered a fumbled punt behind the goal line for a touchdown and maginnes carried the ball over the goal line for the fourth touchdown near the end of the period her rington kicked the goal from two of these touchdowns so that at the end of the first half lehigh lead 26-0 lebanon valley braced at the beginning of the second half and scored on a forward pass but lehigh s defense then tightened and prevented further scoring w maginnes made the final touchdown of the game in the fourth period and herrington kicked the goal making the final score 33-7 w maginnes savaria and her rington were the most consistent ground gainers for lehigh while wysocki and young played the best defensive game their tackling being of a high order herrington ran the team well from quarter back and on two occasions aston ished the crowd by intercepting forward passes and running them back for substantial gains for lebanon valley haines and keat ing played the best games although keating was rather weak on punt ing lehigh suffered a loss in the third quarter when captain hal sted injured his shoulder and was forced to leave the game coach keady made a number of substitutions during the second half after the game was practically won all the second string back field men got a chance in the game lind apgar lare straub and nolan going in during the half rhoad the guard from philadel phia central high school got in the game for a period and showed up well in his first appearance in college football keady succeeded in strengthening the line present at the meeting of the arts and science club which was held last thursday at 4.00 p.m in coppee hall so the election of officers was deferred until another meeting can be held as soon as a date can be found this meeting will be called the civil engineering society held its first meeting of the year last thursday evening at 8.00 p m in the geology lecture room in williams hall the members of the society were fortunate in hav ing to address them jose vela m.e 11 c.e 13 who has been engaged in construction work in ecuador and w c cumings of the bethlehem steel co these men both delivered talks on south america which were very interest ing and instructive mr vela con fined his talk chiefly to engineer ing in ecuador while mr cum ings told about the region farther down along the west coast mr cumings talk was illustrated by many excellent slides in his address mr vela saidi that ecuador is rich in natural re sources which are undeveloped in the western and eastern part of the country on account of poor trans portation facilities there are few railroads in ecuador and the chief means of transportation are horse baek and mule-back the high ways 1 were built by the english and are few in number the longest being about 180 miles these high ways have a fairly good surface on account of the clay which adheres to the stone used in their construc tion other roads are mere country roads and farther in the interior they become mule trails guayaquil is the chief seaport town and the english firm of j g white & co is doing the sanitation work there the water supply is taken from clear water springs and is pumped to reservoirs and settling basins and then to the town there is a separate system for fire service a modern sewage system is be ing installed by the j g white co disposal is made directly into the river or first to settling basins and then to the river guayaquil is very healthy in dry seasons but is unhealthy in the rainy season the poorer classes are affected by the plagues and fevers more than the better classes the dreaded tm bonic plague may be avoided by good sanitation and by destroying the rats that carry the plague kioto the capital has a good water supply and is well sewered it has a very healthful climate the longest railroad in ecuador runs from the capital to guayaquil and was built by the english and american engineers and is still be ing operated by them this rail road passes through the andes at a height of about 11,500 feet and sometimes the grade is as much as 7 per cent no trains are run through the passes of the andes at night on account of the frequent landslides there are four other railroad in ecuador which are government owned and operated surveys are being made at present for several other railroads there is only one mining com pany in ecuador the south ameri can development co they have a profitable mine in the southern part of the country but to get to the mine you must travel by mule continued
