swede johnson does creditable pitching despite bad ankle the westling team recently held their annual banquet at kurtz's restaurant the team turned out well for their final get-together of the year although the squad did not win the intercollegiates the season was successful and lehigh turned out one champion in bob good during the dinner coach sheridan capt booth manager jen ness and good all gave remi niscences 1 of the season the coach commended the squad highly for their faithful hard work the election of captain and assistant manager candidates also took place john bertolet 21 was elected captain for next season and the other men chosen to go up before college men were bockel downing and salzman dr f c zeisberg to speak at chem meet the junior class banquet which is to be held next friday evening at 7 o'clock at kurtz's restaurant promises to be a function worthy of note in the class history a large majority of the class have already expressed their intentions of at tending and many men originally in the classes of 19 and 20 but who expect to graduate in 21 have also secured tickets among the speakers are president h • s drinker prof j l stew t art prof h r reiter and w r okeson the guests are capt j r lang and prof j m toohy in addition to the speeches and the musical selections which will be rendered throughout the evening there will be a big surprise for everybody the committee in charge of the affair has worked hard to make this 1 banquet one to be long remembered by the mem bers of the class and it is urged that as many will attend as pos sible men who have not already secured tickets are requested to do so at once in order that final ar range me nta may be made tickets are 3.50 and may be obtained from any of the following members of the committee in charge of the banquet bertolet burgess carey childs goldman and huebner naval engineers plan meets lehigh will meet lebanon val ley its second opponent of the season tomorrow afternoon on taylor field judging from the commendable work shown by the team last saturday the lehigh twirlers should have little diffi culty in taking tomorrow's game swede johnson was pitching muter difficulties in the swarth more game on account of his sprained ankle andi coach tom keady has deemed it advisable not to put him in tomorrow ' ' johnny lees or dave pfeiffer will prob ably be substituted sheedy a newcomer will play at first base except for these changes the line up will be similar to that of the previous game not much is known of the leb anon valley nine but in past years they have turned out the society is very fortunate ill having for the speaker of the even ing dr f c zeisberg the leading chemist of tne jjiil'ont de'-nemoi'irs powder co who was in charge of the manufacture of all the nitric acid produced by that company during the war he will lecture on the manufacture of nitric acid from sodium nitrate the process by which the dv pont company turned out by far the greater part of the nitric acid used by the united states in the recent war the talk will be illustrated with lantern slides and will undoubted ly be of interest to the general stu dent body especially those taking chemical engineering refresh ments and smokes will be served at the close of the meeting bach choir in new york so far a great deal of interest has been shown in the inter-fra ternity basketball league and it is proving to be a great success as was expected a number of frater nities have presented very formid able teams and it is certain that the winner will have to go through several good tussles before the cup can be awarded all except two teams have finished the second round andi by the end of the week the four victorious teams will be ready for the semi-finals so far in the upper leg the phi delta theta quintet has had very easy going having easily defeated the sigma chi and the sigma phi teams psi upsilon has also had a strong five in the running and promises to make a strong bid for an entrance into the finals the contest between sigma nu and phi gamma delta will determine the opponent for the phi delt five and should prove a very interesting match in the lower leg two teams show up best and will most likely be th.c opponents for the finals these are betfi th^+a pi find alplin gjy fv both teams have only played one game but have shown good ma terial for a championship team the alpha chi rho quintet com pletely swamped the pi lambda phi team in their contest while the betas nosed out the strong delta tau delta team no prediction can be made as to the stronger of these two teams because their op ponents were not of equal strength at the time of going to press the alpha chi rho team faces the phi sigma kappa five and although the former team looks the stronger the phi sigma kappa team may pull the unexpected this team as well as the winner of the chi psi kappa sigma contest may prove a surprise and will bear watching snyder's orchestra from easton has been procured to play at the university dance on april 10 this orchestra scored a hit with the good music they put out at the last uni versity dance several weeks ago the dance will be held in drown hall as usual and will start at 8.30 p.m subscription 1.00 mustard and cheese at thursday's meeting of the athletic committee it was decided to officially recognize swimming as a minor sport although it has been the custom in past years not to grant recognition to a team until it had at least three seasons in which to show its worth it has been deemed fitting to break precedence i this case p upon reviewing the past season ff lehigh s natators it will be round that the brown and white s.quad scored a total of 144 points against the 111 made by its op ponents this record is very com mendable and compares favorably with the records of most of le high s other recognized sports the interest with which the stu dent body has traced the doings oxi the team and*the fact that the pool was crowded at every home meet during the past season show that swimming is developing into a very popular activity now that the sport has been officially sanc tioned succeeding seasons will un notice notice was given in the last brown and wjhite of the forma tion of a naval engineering so ciety for the promotion of discus sions by prominent men who will speak before the society on all the subjects covered by the field of this course however it might be well to go a little farther in the plans which now of course are only tenta tive the field of this course is excep tionally large covering not only the actual building of the vessels but also their operation and then the field of american foreign trade there are subjects that will interest every branch of engineer ing and a large field that will be of interest to business men — that field covering the foreign trade opera tion of steamship lines and bank ing marine insurance and allied subjects the course in ship construction and marine engineering has been introduced to nearly every ship ping and shipbuilding firm in the east and without exception it has been received with the greatest in terest and all of these companies have expressed their willingness to stand back of the course with such a backing the future popu larity of the course is assured it will be impossible to have a meet this spring but plans are be ing made now for next fall when it is hoped to have prominent men in all branches of the shipping world to address the society naval engineering has become a popular branch of study at lehigh ever since its founding as a course last year and this plan of having prominent men addiress the club will serve to advertise the course as well as instruct the students captain lang has received a copy of the report of capt h t bull who was here the latter part of last month to inspect the unit some extracts from which might prove interesting to r 0 t c men the lehigh unit has been in spected and conditions as to credits standing with other de partments and co-operation could not be better the great majority of the faculty are enthusiastic sup porters of the unit ' two hunded and eighty stu dents are enrolled which is ap proximately twenty-five per cent of available students ' ' inspection of this unit is recom mended in order to determine whether lehigh should be classed as a distinguished college capt lang is entitled to great credit for the excellent condition of the r 0 t c unit at lehigh the proposal to start a crack regiment of 50 to 100 men from the r 0 t c unit to be called the drinker rifles is meeting with evident approval of the men thus far 61 have declared their intention of joining ' ' the athletic committee will not approve the election of a student teams the contest was very well played lehigh s fielding especially being fast w t hile the pitching on both sides was good except for errors of the infielders at critical times the score would have been smaller weise the first man up for swarthmore opened the game by hitting to rote w t ho fumbled the bail me i^-lx i _ fining m safe at first johnson then had a streak of wildness and walked the next two men but tightened and re tired the next three men two of them on strikes rote lehigh s lead off man was out shortstop to iirst doao>ttxi wtilkeu lai on ike hit and run mathag lined to left center and donovan was doubled off first johnson got in another hole in the second inning the bases being filled by means of two bases on balls and an uncovered base but johnson again pitched himself out of the hole when he forced young to line to beck for the third out in their half of the inning lehigh went out in order on easy chances in the third inning both sides went out in order swarthmore got a man on base in the fourth and he stole second but the next batter could do nothing with john son's curves and he was left stranded in lehigh s half of the fourth mathag got the first hit of the game when he drove a hot grounder between first and second but beck rolled to the pitcher for the third out with one down in the fifth young made the first hit for swarthmore by driving one be tween shortstop and third savaria made a nice catch on the next man and young was caught stealing for the third out wilson making a perfect throw to second yap opened the fifth inning for the home team by singling clean over second ; he took second on an error by the center fielder but was out by a w t ide margin in trying to make third savaria struck out and douglas drove a long fly to right for the third out the right fielder making a pretty catch while back ed up against the wall at the beginning of the sixth pfeiffer went in to pitch for le high pfeiffer showed good form striking out two men and forcing the other to roll an easy groufider to beck continued on third page after swarthmore had gone out in order in the seventh lehigh broke into the scoring column with two runs mathag finally savaria took second on first ball tennis prospectsi for the coming season are very promising and le high should have a championship team in this line of sport many of the old men are back in college and together with the new men who have signified their intentions of coming out for the team should form a representation of unusual ability some of the old men are estes hall and warner and the most promising candidate from the freshman class 1 is rodney beck the latter has played in matches against the famous 1 star tilden and is practically sure of a place on this year's tennis team warner took secondi place in the spring of 1918 when he was defeated by r coffin 18 who took the champion ship that year indicating that he will probably be one of the run ners up in the conning matches other good material is in the fresh man class and is expected to show up when the first tennis call is made in the near future the tennis team has an attrac tive schedule this year and some good meets will be staged on the local courts the bethlehem bach choir led by dr j fred wolle and includ ing two hundred and seventy-five singers of which a number are le high students will journey to new 7 york city this saturday to take part in the big festival of music which is being held there april 6 to 11 the musical festival is under the direction of walter damrosch and will consist of six big concerts all to be held in the 71st regiment armory park avenue and 34th street the concert in which the bach choir will participate is the fourth of the series and will be held at 2 30 p.m saturday afternoon the choir will sing chorales and the chorus cum sancto spiritu from the mass in b minor the program also includes beethoven's fifth symphony by the new york symphony orchestra and brahms double concerto by jascha heif etz and pablo casals all expenses of the trip will be borne by charles m schwab who is president of the new york oratorio society under whose auspices the festival is being given the bach choir has been in timately connected with lehigh university for some years dr wolle the choir director was or ganist at lehigh from 1887 to 1905 dr drinker is now the president of the
