university dance to be held saturday night in drown hall two old men back lehigh joins american university union confucianism discussed in living groups two extra five=minute periods necessary to decide the exciting struggle privileges of club extended to all men in the service upon registering line=up uncertain but several men will be given chance during game the worship of ancestors and the past is fundamental in this religion lehigh s soccer team will meet the lafayette team for the last time this season next saturday at 2.30 p.m on march field easton the game is a regularly scheduled penn sylvania intercollegiate league game and to defeat lafayette will be to practically put them out of the running as lafayette was de feated by harverford in a league game last saturday 2 goals to 1 two practice games have been played with the lafayette team this year the first resulting in a 3-0 victory for lafayette and the second in a victory for the brown and white 1-0 the game tomor row will break this tie and decide the soccer supremacy for the year between lehigh and lafayette as well as being an important league game the lehigh team has recently been strengthened by the addition of coffin and captain beard mem bers 1 of last years team who report ed for soccer at the close of the foot ball season but as the lafayette line-up also shows several new licilii'tite lurv association lehigh university has been made a member of the american university union in eu rope hereafter all lehigh men in the service graduates non-gradu ates and under-graduates will have all the privileges of the head quarters and club maintained by this union in paris this head quarters consists of the royal palace hotel where the men can get a room and meals for very mod erate prices where an information bureau will be maintained for their aid and where they will have an opportunity of meeting men from other colleges r d halliwell 19 who has just returned from france after having served in the ambulance corps for six months spent a week at the union just before leaving paris and speaks in the highest terms of the comfort and enjoyment that can be obtained by any lehigii soldier or sailor who puts up there while on furlough in paris once you have gone through its portals it makes no difference whether you are a private or a general everyone is simply an american college man and they meet on that plane here the men will find the newspapers from england and america and many college publications includ ing the brown and white burr and alumni bulletin the union has a list of all lehigh men and it is only necessary for the men in the service to register giving name and class to be accord ed all the privileges of the club beginning with the cotillion club dance tonight and ending with the college dance tomorrow night the social life of the uni versity brightens just prior to the christmas holiday period several fraternities are holding house parties over the week-end and many out-of-town guests are ex pected along with the cotillion club dance tonight the freshman class is having a dance since its members do not attend the former affair the variety show which in previous years has been given at this time has been eliminated fol lowing last year s precedent the cotillion dance will be held in drown hall starting at nine o'clock herzberg's orchestra of philadelphia composed of six pieces has been engaged for the evening the committee chairmen who have arranged for the dance along with the officers of the club are as follows music j w marshall decorations b b davidson • refreshments b eggie ; programs j m coleman invita tions r s bellman the college dance saturday night has secured the same music as the cotillion club subscrip tion for the dance is one dollar tonight the freshman dance will be held at the sigma nu house the dance which will be informal is open to the class subscription being two dollars white's banjo orchestra will furnish the music the delta tau delta fraternity is entertaining the following guests over the week-end : miss margaret kelsey miss continued on third page prof a w klein writes book on kinematics tomorrow afternoon the varsity five will officially open the season with a game with lehanon valley of last year's team which lost but four games only two men re main to form a nucleus around which to build they being captain mccarthy and wysocki there are however several second string men from last year who should develop into good men this season they are macdonald ketcham and r mccarthy straub who last year played such a sterling game for the fast freshman quintette is also back of the new men savaria and bump have thus far shown the best form all of the above mentioned men will get into the game tomorrow and as many more as circumstances will permit it is very likely how ever that from these nine men the regular varsity team will be picked the squad has been hard at wark under captain mccarthy for the past two weeks and has rapidly im proved scrimmages have been held practically every day every body on the squad having a chance to show his worth signal drill was started wednesday and the team is rapidly developing the pass ing game so successfully employed by last years five captain mccarthy has not as yet definitly decided upon the team that will start the game but it will probably be captain mccarthy and savaria forwards ; wysocki center ; straub macdonald or ketcham guards r mccarthy maurer and bump will also get into the game new draft regulations assist technical students prompt payment of war fund pledges desired confucianism was the subject taken last wednesday evening by the weekly discussion groups among the phases of the subject as discussed in the various groups were the foundations of the re ligion its teachings and ideals confucianism which is the state religion of china was founded about 551 b c by confucius a leader of importance in china he was an intense admirer of the past being of the opinion that the present exists for the past and the religion he founded is one of an cestral worship confucianism also employs a certain amount of mysti cism ' thus for example there are held on midnight of the longest day of each year prayers to heaven which are supiposed to ward off evil strictly speaking there is no personal god in the religion of confucius but the reverence of the chinese for their great teacher ap proaches worship very closely con fucius formulated a very compre hensive code of laws for every action in life there is no account taken of sense of guilt against a god but there is the idea of ma terial misfortune as the result of wrong actions the chinese are very religious and consider the sun as represent ing all good things a noteworthy thing in their religion is their re spect for elders another one of their great teachings is that a man must get right with his fellow beings before he can gain the favor of the spirits — although their conception of the latter is vague the spiritual authority of con fucianism is the five books by con fucius they teach believers to observe among other things the lessons of the past and to observe natural laws the religion makes absolutely no promise in regard to the future life but is purely one of agnosticism confucianism as re garded from the ethical stand point is of great interest but it lacks initiative and has no driving power athletic calendar ready for distribution it is urged that all the men pledged to help the sufferers in prison war camps by giving to the student friendship war fund be prompt in payment this is es sential because it is necessary to send over nine hundred y m c a men to france russia italy and belgium at once to relieve these sufferers mr j m frey received a com munication from friendship fund headquarters in new york city asking the prompt payment of the pledge money the communication contained in part ' ' a million and a half dollars has been pledged in all and less than two hundred thousand has been paid to the national treasury general pershing cabled dr mott that the y m c a must send 400 workers to france before december 20 this shows the need for the money at once the local secre tary desires to see all the men who have pledged before december 15 it is hoped that all the men will be able to make payment but for those men who find it impossible to pay in full part payment is de sired december 11 1917 students recommeded by the faculty may enlist in engineer reserve corps and be placed in class five of draft dr drinker telegraphs from washington as follows : ' ' on inquiry at the war depart ment i am informed that the ef fect of the ruling made on decem ber 8 is that students within the draft age that is men between twenty-one and thirty-one from approved schools of engineering of which lehigh is one and who are certified by the institution as of grade in highest third of technical students in the institution based on academic record and also on their relation with their fellow stu dents and observation of instruc tors will if they enlist in engi neers reserve be allowed to con tinue their courses at college and will be placed in class v of the draft the december 15th limita tion does not apply to such stu dents they can so enlist at any time before being actually called under the draft men are advised not to unduly delay so enlisting this of course d ! oes not mean that enlistments after december 15th from this class of students may be made in any other branch of the army it relates only to enlist ments in the engineers reserve n m emery vie c president the following message was re ceived later in the day : december 11 1917 in further confirmation of my telegram of this date relative to furloughing of enlisted engineer ing students to complete their studies i call attention to the fol lowing message from judge advo cate general crowder to the gov ernors of all states on inquiry at the office of the chief of engineers i was informed today that the regulations therein referred to and to be prescribed by him are in course of preparation and that a copy continued on third page lehigh s soccer team registered a victory in their first pennsyl vania state intercollegiate league game of the season wednesday afternoon at haverford by down ing the junior haverford team two goals to one this victory gives lehigh a good chance for the championship of the league as an other victory for lehigh over lafa yette in the game to be played at easton tomorrow afternoon will re sult in a deadlock for first place be tween the brown and white team and the university of pennsyl vania junior team which is now leading the league haverford de feated lafayette last week so that a victory for lehigh over lafa yette tomorrow seems probable the game at haverford wed nesday afternoon was played on a field covered with snow and ice so that the conditions were anything but ideal for good soccer but le high proved its superiority against adverse conditions lehigli was handicapped during the first half by playing with only ten men as coffin did not arrive in time to take his place at center forward until near the end of the first half during the first half the play was very even and neither team was able to score lehigh had several good chances to register a goal but could not get the ball by the goalkeeper stewart of le high guarded his goal equally well so that at the end of the first half the teams were deadlocked at 0-0 lehigh braced at the beginning of the second half and retained pos session of the ball for the greater part of the half many opportuni ties for trys at goal were offered but only one was successful when gorisse shot a pretty goal after beard had taken the ball down the field and centered it during the last few minutes of play in the second half haverford managed to get the ball past goal keeper stewart for their only score of the game two extra periods of five minutes each were then neces sary in order to break the tie exist ing at the end of the regulation periods in the first of these extra periods neither team was able to score but in the second period gorisse of lehigh shot a pretty goal which decided the game in lehigh s favor this goal was the result of some clever teamwork beard rushing the ball book on kinematics of ma chinery by prof arthur warner klein m.e of the department of mechanical engineering of lehigh university the book contains numerous problems taken direct from prac tice the solution of which by other means than kinematics is either ex tremely laborious or actually im possible except by the time-con suming and more or less unsatisfac tory method of cut-and-try this is one of the reasons why the book should appeal to engineers engaged in actual practice as well as to the students of technical schools the present treatise concerns it self mainly with the analysis equivalence displacement veloci ties and accelerations of mechan isms and the application of the principles involved to many practi cal problems these latter are solved almost entirely by relatively simple graphical methods the book consists of 227 pages being therefore compact and easily carried is attractive in appearanc * being neat'y and substantially bound printed in large distinct type on good paper and the cuts are unusually clear and striking in appearance emphasized portions are in bold face instead of italics thus making it easy to find such portions and enhancing the attrac tiveness of the page the 1918 athletic calendar is to be out tomorrow p m young who has charge of the calendar this j year announces that it is bigger and better than ever there are to be twelve pages one for each month a frontispiece and a hand some leather cover there are over forty cuts di vided into three classes fraternity and dormitory views campus scenes and pictures of athletic teams the
