april 1919 edition to be full of new features besides a complete summary of lehigh life the 1919 epitome will be issued early in april if the aim of the board is realized this is neces sary on account of the graduation of the seniors in this month the board has had a hard time of get ting the book together on time on this account and also on account of war conditions the senior class book will ap pear as heretofore together with the epitome and the editors have promised something novel while this issue will not be full of expensive designs and illustra tions the book will be fresh new and full of new material the feature section which made such a big hit last year will be carried on and as old wine should improve with age a new section will be devoted to the alumni and all the old sections brown and white quintette lost to the naval academy five on saturday^afternoon at annopolis by a score of 30-18 in the fastest game of the season although the score appears rather one sided the game was close and well played the navy team has the distinction of giving lehigh her first defeat this season lehigh got the jump on the mid dies and quickly scored two baskets but the naval five quickly caught up to them after that both teams fought along on even terms and at the end of the first half the score was 15-15 the lehigh team was not in the pink of condition that the mid dies were and as a result they could not keep even with them after the first half the second half was a whirlwind affair from the start to finish and the varsity could not hold the pace starting the second half the future admirals made the game safe by scoring four points from the floor their defence was un faultering and lehigh was unable to score excepting by three foul goals by straub the work of hess and older arts and science members will give short talks relative to the future work of the club and of the general work as carried on at present in addition to this feast of classical and scientific resulted in a 50-19 victory for lehigh but muhlenberg is out to avenge this defeat or at least to make the game less one-sided last saturday muhlenberg lost to temple university at philadelphia 35-29 evening in drown holl on the topic of jerusalem the talk given by dr blum was of great interest on account of the re cent capture of jerusalem by the british special music was furnish ed by j h b krell 21 who de livered several excellent violin solos in his address dr blum told about the zionist movement the purpose of which is to establish the jewish people in palestine dr blum also described several points of interest in jerusalem and re lated many of the traditions with which that place abounds the talk given by dr blum follows in part : we see a great deal in the papers today about the capture of jerusalem by the british under general allenby and also about the return of the jews to the holy land the zionist movement the capture of jerusalem is one of the most important events in the history of the war the city has been in the possession of the mohammedans for 800 years with the exception of a few years in the eleventh century after it had been captured by the crusaders since the capture of the city it has been said that the jews especially the zionists will return to the holy land the purpose of zionism is to establish in palestine a nation of which jews will con stitute the majority of the popula tion and where they may look for ward to bonne rule already a fund is being collected for the zionists and for a hebrew university in the city of jerusalem where hebrew will be the language of the univer sity ' ' modern jerusalem is far differ ent from ancient jerusalem the latter being from twenty-five to thirty feet below the modern city jerusalem is in the form of an graduate of johns hopkins university and who also took graduate work at wis consin university the university of pennsylvania and the philadel phia divinity school is now presi dent of hobart college but recently returned from the french front he has been given a leave of absence from his college and is literally waking up america depicting his experiences the gist of dr powell's address follows : lehigh university has a unique position in this great war because of its engineering and technical work at present the temptation is strong in college men to igo into the trenches technical students should realize this and take steps towards making sure of staying in college their great duty is to con tinue their education and prepare themselves for a more important work when war broke out the united states w t as not aware of the signifi cance of the strugle however this is now past the country is put ting its spirit as well as wealth into the war the soldiers that we have sent over have the right spirit they forget personal danger in their joy of being able to do their share it is for this reason that our forces are so much admired by the english and french they expect great things from america and we must not disappoint them at the end we will find that all our efforts were not in vain ' ' at the time of the first london air raid no fear was shown by the populace for a time these raids occurred every night but they were received with the calm that is in dicative of the spirit of the allies perhaps the happiest place in london is st dunstons wiiere the blind are being taught to read through their sense of touch mar velous advances have been made in the re-education of men injured on the firing line ' the day of the old soldier's home is gone instead of providing for injured men they are taught to provide for them selves which is certainly a great improvement the old oxford and cambridge have gone with the rest of the english colleges after the war they will be re-established practically different institutions will be form ed plans will be made whereby the attendance of americans will be facilitated england realizes that for technical training her col leges _ are outclassed by many american schools along with the many radical changes in the viewpoint of the allies comes the entry of the united states into the war the spirit of america was long on the side of the allies as shown by her many efforts to assist struggling belgium and france the work of the y m c a could not be dupli cated by any other organization continued on third page at the regular monthly meeting of the electrical engineering so ciety held last thursday evening in the physics lecture room the members of the society were favor ed by an informal talk on the con ditions of electric railroads at the present time with particular refer ence to the lehigh valley transit company by mr e c spring of the transportation department of the latter company the other speaker of the evening was prof h m frey of the department of physics who spoke on the cot trell process for removing solid matter from gases in smoke stacks by electrical methods in his talk on the conditions which must be met by the electric railroads at the present time mr spring brought out the fact that the railway companies must meet the demands of the public and satisfy them at all times even under abnormal conditions he said that good results have been obtain ed by cooperation between the fac tories in this vicinity and the rail way company by means of which phss factories let their men out at intervals in order to avoid the ne cessity of carrying all the men at the same time on the street cars the lehigh valley transit com pany has been particularly hard pressed due to the enormous amount of traffic which it must carry from the bethlehem steel works which daily requires the transportation of thousands of workmen to and from their homes mr spring also discussed the pro-posed increase in car fares and explained the various factors which make it necessary for the company to contemplate this all materials which are used by the traction com pany have increased greatly in price and the cost of labor has in creased proportionately so that an increased revenue must be forth coming if the company is to main tain their service the public has become so accustomed to the five cent fare that there is a strong feel ing against an increase in it but mr spring showed conclusively i that an increase in fares must come eventually the speaker also gave an idea of the many difficulties which must be overcome 1 in the operation of the street cars when he mentioned the fact that the snow storms of the past month disabled over eighty armatures and put about forty cars out of commission in concluding his talk mr spring made an appeal to the public to be considerate when the cars are late for some reason or other and to realize what difficulties must be overcome in the operation of the cars in his address on the cottrell process prof fry gave a com plete exposition of the process from the time of its invention illustrat ing it with several experiments in cluding the original
