j j early 18 to discuss theory of rusting s l chang on the chemistry of foods the february meeting of the chemical society will be held on thursday february 21 in saucon hall at 7.30 p.m two student papers will be presented j j early 18 will speak on the rust ing of iron the other speaker s l chang 18 has chosen as his subject the chemistry of food stuffs in his talk mr early will con sider the modern conception of the rusting of iron he will discuss the common form of rusting chem ically known as rusting by oxida tion and also the form of rusting caused by electrolysis the latter is a form of corrosion about which very little has been known up to a short time ago and which chemists have recently investigated very thoroughly in his talk mr chang will dis cuss the chemistry of foodstuffs with special reference to the effect of the war on the development of this branch of chemistry he will tell of the various substitutes which have been evolved because of scar city of the regular article of diet the modern theory of food values and the " calorie classification will also be treated following the talks the usual.re freshments will be served varsity meets pitt saturday 3 p.m southern wrestlers here tomorrow university of virginia grapplers to meet brown and white for s irst time on saturday the wrestling team will engage in the second college meet of the season when the wrest lers from the university of virgin ia will be their opponents the team representing the south ern university is an unknown qual - ity here as it is their first appear < ance on a lehigh schedule they have developed a strong wrestling ] team the sport being only recently - introduced there and have been 1 very successful thus far this season { the saturday meet will also be . the first intercollegiate meet at , home this season for the brown and ! white wrestlers although the team lost the navy meet on saturday it was a close and evenly matched series of con tests the navy always puts out , a team of good grapplers coach - billy sheridan's men are out daily learning new points of the s game and keeping in shape for con . tests to follow there is no doubt ' but that they will give good account of themselves in the virginia meet i tomorrow although the team for saturday has not been definitely settled the following men will probably rep resent lehigh in the meet : 115 pound class — reynolds 18 125 pound class — bevier 19 135 pound class — wuerz 20 145 pound class — loeser 21 158 pound class — latimer 18 175 pound class — manley 19 heavyweight class — booth 20 freshmen quintet scores another victory allentown prep defeated by 23=19 score on their own floor the freshman basketball quintet registered another victory by de feating allentown prep 23-19 on their own floor the prep school boys were out weighed but put up a hard fight the game was close throughout and at the end of the playing time the score was tie 16-16 the game was decided by playing an extra five minute period the freshman team has been re cently strengthened by hipkins savaria and rathbone who have been out for the varsity squad and better team work has also been exhibited next wednesday childs for hip kins alentown prep barth for kohl moyer for brown referee — solomon annual competition established by alumni being the thirty sixth of its kind the thirty-sixth annual junior oratorical contest will be held in the chapel next friday morning february 22 at 11 o'clock the number of competitors will be only four this year as due to the unset tled conditions among the upper classmen at the present time only f our men have qualified for the con test instead of the usual six the three alumni prizes of 25 15 and 10 will be awarded as in previous years to the three men who in the opinion of the judges give the best orations the juniors who are to deliver orations and their subjects are as follows : 11 d ginder the chemist in the nation's service w a kreidler " the arch traitor ' ' j d sourber — college or the uniform i 11 tsai — ' ' confusianism ' ' the u st is to be held under the fol ' lg regulations adopted by the alumni association in 1882 : 1 the contest shall be held on the 22nd day of february or on the day designated by the university to commemorate the birthday of washington 2 there shall be a first prize of 25 a second prize of 15 and a third prize of 10 3 to entitle one to be a com petitor he must be a member of the junior class taking a regular course 4 subjects for the orations shall be announced at the beginning of the first term of every year and upon one of these each competitor shall write an oration not to exceed 1200 words taking about eight minutes in delivery 5 the executive committee of the alumni association or a com mittee of not fewer than three to be appointed by them shall hear the competitors whose orations shall have been approved and the awards shall be made by a majority of these judges 6 in awarding the prizes the judges shall consider both the lit erary merits and the delivery of each oration 7 these rules are subject to amendment by the faculty prof b l miller to address v.m.c.a local team shows complete reversal of form and ex periences no difficulty wysocki features game is fast and snappy but result was never in doubt after first ten minutes lehigh had little trouble in de feating the much heralded seton hall aggregation in taylor gym wednesday evening / the final score was 37-22 the game was undoubtedly the best played here this year and with wysocki and hess leading them the brown and white quintet showed a complete reversal of form which was very gratifying to the spectators if the varsity con tinues to play in this form against pittsburgh on saturday it will not be easily defeated wysocki was the main reason for lehigh s victory he was every where and time after time he blocked seton hail shots for the goal he was continually breaking up their passing game and was the main cog in the brown and white offensive giving a brilliant exhi bition of passing he also scored ! three baskets hess also played an exceptional game and he was at his best on the offense having a total of seven field goals to his credit donovan played an excellent game and was re sponsible for twelve of lehigh s points for the visitors the work of cummings was the feature his game being surpased only by that of wysocki his goal shooting was very accurate and he succeeded in caging the ball six times from the floor he tallied the same number of fouls the game was fast and well played but after the first few minutes the result was never in doubt the brown and white lead ing at the end of the first half by a score of 18-10 starting the last half they continued to be the ag gressors and soon piled up a big nominated election will be held : at a future meeting , the question of holding a class dinner was discussed and it was de - cided that the dinner should be - held with every effort toward suit • able war economy the committee will be appointed soon and date announced as soon as fixed christ's indignation topic dis cussed last wenesday evening the topic in the various discus sion groups last wednesday night was christ's indignation in the future still other phases of his life and work will be discussed most of the pictures of christ show him with a wan sad face and the many sermons of his meekness and humility leave the wide spread impression that peaeefulness was his dominant quality this was true to a certain extent but he was not willing to sacrifice right for peace at one time he said i i hate and abhor falsehood christ was an example of entire unselfishness he thought only of the betterment of the world and the help of mankind he was never known to speak a word of anger when they brutally mistreated him but his indignation was aroused when others were abused christ came to establish the prin ciples of the worship of god and to try to make the people more sincere in their worship violations of these principles made christ very indignant the trading in the temple stirred his wrath and he drove the people out a great public evil always excit ed his wrath christ would indeed be angry at the graft and corrup tion of many of our present day city governments if all men would only perform their work as honest ly as christ did the world would not be embroiled in the present war it is an example and a direct result of selfishness and dishonesty because he loved men and want ed them to love him christ con demned evil and tried to impress the world with a feeling of resent ment towards it he was working for the world trying to make people see their faults and correct them thereby making this earth a better place to live in although christ did become angry at men he only did so for their own good and he tried to see all the good in them before con demning their evil he taught that one should not be bitter or acrid in criticism and nether should one be bitter because he is criticised no man is safe until he learns not to dally with temptation but to repel it immediately and instinc tively with fierce indignation when christ wasi tempted he fol lowed this and said ' ' get thee be hind me satan ' ' liberality is merely weak and unintelligent toleration the many different indian religions preached love and good will in the form of toleration but a member of one of these sects would never lift a finger to help a person or feel a stir of in dignation at the evils of his land anger is one of the sinews of the soul he who lacks it hath a maimed mind christ desired to applaud the good in men but he wanted them to see their own evils and cor rect them he has indeed been the great encourager of man prof benjamin l miller of the department of geology will be the speaker at the y m c a meeting next sunday evening prof miller is well known to the student body as a man of experience and travel and the topic he has chosen the faith of men promises to be of help and interest he will also dwell on the various phases of faith as related to science miss martha cassell a well known soloist of bethlehem will favor the meeting with several vocal selections mustard and cheese meeting saturday strong pitt quintet comes here with long string of of victories tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock the lehigh five will meet the strong university of pittsburgh quintet in taylor gym the pitt five although entirely a new team is exceptionally strong this year and are holding up the good record which pitt has made during the past few seasons up to the present time this season they have suffered only one defeat last week they were victorious over washington and jefferson by the narrow mar gin of three points penman mc laren easterday hutchinson lutes levine nicholas and robin son will comprise the squad coming east under coach flint and man ager baldridge mclaren and easterday were scrubs on last year's team while all the other men are new seneca street interment was private at nisky hill cemetery many students attend mechanical engineering society adopts minutes rt rev ethelbert talbot bishop of the bethlehem diocese and trustee of the university to gether with rev s n kent and dr s u mitman of the church of the nativity officiated at the funeral services of the late prof j f klein which were held in packer chapel last wednesday afternoon the choir of the church of the nativity also took part in the services large attendance of members of the faculty and board of trus tees alumni students and friends together with many floral tributes showed the esteem and honor in which prof j f klein was held by all with whom he came in con tact many of the men who had come to know prof klein better than others because they came in contact with him more attended the funeral among those present who are prominent among the alumni were dr h r price 99 presi dent of the trustees of the univer sity brooklyn n v ; dr c l doolittle club moriz bernstein 96 secretary of the philadelphia lehigh club the interment which was private was made in the nisky hill ceme tery immediately after the services in the chapel resolution ad6pted the mechanical engineering so ciety at a special meeting adopted the following resolutions in the minutes : the mechanical engineering society of lehigh university de sires to record its profound sorrow and the personal loss suffered by its members through the death of the late professor joseph f klein for over a generation pro fessor klein unsparingly gave of himself to the promotion of the welfare of lehigh students especi ally those pursuing the course in mechanical engineering and the success of many lehigh men is due directly to the inspiration gained under the guidance of the great teacher who has departed to his boys as he delighted to call them professor klein was more than a teacher ; he was their friend and counselor and always mani fested a paternal interest in their welfare nothing pleased him so greatly as to be able to extend help when needed and his interest was keenly maintained after a stu dent's graduation in the death of professor klein lehigh has suffered a great loss and the mechanical engineering society wishes through this minute to pay its tribute of respect to his memory ' ' the mustard and cheese dram atic club will meet in the mustard and cheese room drown hall saturday at 1.30 for the purpose of discussing the question of put ting on a spring production in con nection with the junior week activities the arts and science club will hold their record its profound sorrow and the personal loss suffered by its members through the death of the late professor joseph f klein for over a generation pro fessor klein unsparingly gave of himself to the promotion of the welfare of lehigh students especi ally those pursuing the course in mechanical engineering and the success of many lehigh men is due directly to the inspiration gained under the guidance of the great teacher who has departed to his boys as he delighted to call them professor klein was more than a teacher ; he was their friend and counselor and always mani fested a paternal interest in their welfare nothing pleased him so greatly as to be able to extend help when needed and his interest was keenly maintained after a stu dent's graduation in the death of professor klein
