passed by any college of equal size the first real test of this year's football team will be tomorrow when the brown and white lines up against the yale team both teams have played and won two games of the so-called big five at the time of writing the new haven team looks the strongest they de feated carnegie tech 25-0 in the first game of the year and last saturday snowed under virginia a team which defeated them last year by the score of 61-3 lehigh started off by winning from ursinus 20-0 saturday the team ran up the biggest score a le high team has run up in several years handing albright a 61-6 beating the game tomorrow should be very close and interest ing with the odds slightly in favor of the blue the yale team will misshutchin son who played fullback last week and who is laid up with a sore throat charlie taft is being tried out at center and will probably start bingham and legore will play the halves and jacques will replace hutchinson travis smith will play quarter lehigh s probable lime-up : mc carty and quist end's good and richards tackles pons and tate guards ; mac donald center ; cheno weth quarter brunner and hal sted halves maginnes fullback the first game with yale three years ago resulted in a 37-0 defeat for lehigh ; two years ago the score was 20-3 ; last year the score was 7-6 ; this year ? continued on sixth page lehigh s interests many and di verse have been increased during the past few years by her activity in another sphere that of y m c a work the evening extension schools for workingmen the schools for foreigners and the installment of the big brother movement are but examples of this activity summer camps either directly or indirectly under the supervision of the young men's christian as sociation or its representatives form another phase of the work all the larger colleges of the country have entered into this lat ter field and lehigh too has made her contribution at camp kennebec north bel grade maine lehigh was repre sented by l l dixon 19 who acted as camp leader this is a camp averaging an attendance of 90 and covering the greater por tion of the summer vacation camp tohickon conducted by the central branch of the phila delphia y m c a and located on the delaware at smithtown bucks county about twenty-six miles be low eastom drew also upon lehigh for her leaders h i fair 16 ; w m hartman 17 and l c fenstermacher 18 acted in this capacity during the past summer it is interesting to note that harold whiteside former y m c a secretary at lehigh was a visitor at tohickon and gave an illus trated talk on the association's work in the trenches mr white side had spent some time with the allied troops in france and had st paul's society the combined musical clubs of the university met last wednesday afternoon october 11 in drown hall to reorganize for the coming season the chief business was the election to the position of man ager of e m allan 18 to fill the vacancy caused by last year's man ager-elect leaving college the other officers are : president w h wolfs 17 secretary j a holmes 18 ; assistant manager l a fritchman 18 prospects for the coming season seem especially bright although there are no definite engagements as yet there will probably be a southern trip as last year to phila delphia baltimore and wilming ton the new material as brought out by the tryouts of last wednes day disclosed some excellent musi cal talent about thirty-five men reported for the glee and mando lin clubs these new men together with the older men of last year ought to be able to give an excel lent representation of lehigh along musical lines r a wilbur leader of the mandolin club has decided to wait until some time next week before posting the names of the men eligible for the club the idea of this is to give all possible men a chance as a second tryout for more men will be held next wednesday an urgent request is sent out to all college men especially the new men to come out for the club if they have any musical ability whatever players on the guitar ukelele banjo mandolin and traps are especially desired regular wednesday afternoon practice will be started next week in order to have everything in good shape for the first concert last year's men as well as the new material are urged to report for these re hearsals the glee club will also start work immediately as it is the in continued prom fourth page owing to the two weeks delay in the opening of college it was found necessary to postpone the usual founder's day sports until satur day october 14 as in previous years there will be three sports contested football baseball and track on account of the abolish ment of hazing this year it has been decided by the committee on hazing that the freshmen must wear black socks and ties whether they win the games or not but in case they should win the majority of the sports they have the privi lege of dispensing with the regula tion freshman hat on sundays the sophomore teams will be in charge of the following men : foot ball hazeltine and kennedy ; base ball winterhalter ; track shultz in all probability the winner of the football game last friday l apgar was ap pointed temporary presidient to act until the freshman elections are held these elections for all the officers of the class will be held in the near future the exact date by rev mr kent the chaplain after the interesting program several of the ladies of the faculty served bounteous refreshments to the members lacrosse meeting yale game play by play twenty men responded for fall lacrosse practice last monday manager portz asks that more men whether they had ever used a la crosse stick or not report on the field this afternoon at 4 o'clock there are six varsity men back and they are now showing the new men how to use a stick it might be well to add that only one of last year's varsity team ever used a lacrosse stick before he came to lehigh practice every afternoon at 4 o'clock all new men report to portz or jenness on the field seniors notice ! ah members of the senior class should arrange with mccaa for a sitting at an early date this ap plies also plattsburg idea upon the student-body the meet ing was not well enough attended to warrant organization but gen eral plans were nevertheless dis cussed dr drinker in a letter addressed to the temporary chairman sounded a warning against tbe activities of attorneys attemting to collect al lowances under the army act for the camp expenses on this subject he wrote i have had isome inquiries as to the letters that are being sent out by attorneys to aid you in collecting the allowances under the army act for expenses at the camp i dio not think that you will need any attorney's help in the matter the executive committee of the mili tary training camps associaion in new york is looking after it be sides as soon as the government accounting departments and the war department have systema tized the matter there will be no difficulty i am certain in adjust ing these accounts the united states intercollegi ate lacrosse league will hold a meeting in the park avenue hotel new york city saturday after noon manager f e portz will represent lehigh at this meeting one of the important matters to be discussed is whether or no sideline coaching will be abolished cor nell harvard yale pennsylvania hobart johns hopkins stevens swarthmore and lehigh are league members tn common with lots of the uni versities of the country lehigh recognizes the obligation to extend educational facilities to men and women who are not and for one reason or another can not enroll as regular students for eight years now course's have been offered in a variety of subjects to such stu dents and lehigh students have become used to seeing mature men and women walk to coppee hall and other buildings of the uni versity on saturday mornings this year the extension work is considerably enlarged a note worthy feature being the addition of several courses in education made possible by the addition to the university staff of doctor peters it is expected that the en rollment will be much larger this 3^ear than heretofore evening courses also are given in mathematics mechanical draw ing machine design applied elec tricity metallurgy and in such commercial branches as account ancy investments and business law probably no other uni versity of its size is in a position to serve so well the community in which it is situated in respect to these industrial and commercial studies in time the more ele mentary studies will no doubt be taught in an evening high school but in the meantime these courses offer valuable training to students in education here an interesting phase of lehigh s extension work is the fact that of their own initiative the professors heads of departments who assist in this work on saturdays and in the evenings do so without re muneration we do not know of any other case quite parallel to this this action on the part of the professors concerned sprang from their keen appreciation of the needs of the community and the possibilities of the university in the way of wide public service for a number of years past the evening courses of the university have to a considerable extent been taught by regular students of the university this work has been undertaken without compensation except the pleasure of helping those who greatly need help and the advantage of practicing one's powers of exposition and instruc tion upon men who are willing and ambitious but who are tired with a day's work and who are in most cases imperfectly educated many of the students are foreign-born and it is generally found that the experience of teaching these men is not without value to the future en gineer or business man more than one student now in the university has found in the evening schools the means by which he has fitted himself to enter the receipts of the evening courses are in part spent on university equip ment and in part in supporting a few courses w t hich require the paid services of trained university in structors courses which otherwise could not be offered at present and until the habit of attending such courses is more fully developed in the community through the courtesy of the management of the lehigh or pheum the returns from the yale game at new haven will be an nounced play by play at the foun der's day sports to be held on taylor field tomorrow afternoon the orpheum is giving this service igratus to the students who
