football season in review yale and perm state were our only successful opponents men up to standard record commendable several of the players receive all=american mention from newspaper the opening of the football sea son on september 30 saw a com paratively green eleven line up against ursinus although fum bling was a bad feature of this opening game the general playing was good and promised a good sea son for lehigh this first game showed magin nes chenoweth and pons up to the standard of former years and such new men as brunner mccarthy and herrington as promising stars of the game lehigh completely swamped al bright in the second game of the season not much could be ascer tained of the real strength of the brown and white team for al bright presented a very weak de fense and lehigh scored at will the second string backfield com posed of herrington hurley heu er and wysocki who went in the second period worked even smooth er than the first team the fum bling which was so much in evi dence in the first game was gone the honor of scoring the first touchdown in the new stadium goes to ty halsted who carried the ball over soon after the beginning of the game looking at the yale contest as an early game and with coach keady's eye on perm state and la fayette it was a victory for lehigh instead of as the box score showed it 12-0 in favor of yale the brown and white team played in a highly creditable manner al though tate took the laurels for the day the big tackle was in every play breaking up interfer ence or making a hole and holding when yale needed a few yards for first down brunner chenoweth and pursell cannot be passed by for they backed up the line in splendid shape the surprise of the year came on the following saturday when leba non valley held lehigh to a 3-3 score fumbling and penalties lost several chances to score brunner proved the hero of the day when he dropped one over from his thirty second yard line not to be out dcne mackert of lebanon valley placed a field goal over the cross bar the work of the entire line was good tate good johnson mccarthy and quist repeatedly broke up plays and opened large holes on the offense with the ex ception of maginnes and brunner the playing of the backfield was rather ragged with a complete reversal of form over the week previous the brown and white team defeated catholic university 27-7 in this game le high placed great dependence on end runs with fine results brunner and herrington frequently broke away for long gains the interfer ence a weakness in former games was the best displayed yet brunner herrington maginnes w v mccarthy and wysocki dis tinguished themselves in a high de gree and the playing of the team to a man was especially good the sunday papers following the game with muhlenberg could well have given the result as brunner 9 continued on fifth page everyday friendliness at discussion groups last meeting of first period brings out lively talks the fourth and last meeting of the first of the three periods into which the 1916-17 discussion group meetings are divided was observed in the various dormitory sections and fraternity houses this wednes day evening the last coming to gether of the leaders with their assigned groups was the occasion throughout of rousing meetings and of lively and interesting dis cussions new leaders have been assigned for the various groups for the coming period and an equally profitable series of meetings is hoped for the subject of this week's discus sion was everyday friendli ness the topic being exemplified by the life and work of john wool man an eighteenth century quaker of mount holly new jersey whose life and writings have become fam ous throughout the john wool man's journal he lived comfortably on his small income from his tailoring establishment he avoided luxury as unnecessary and foolish and of ten sacrificed himself or his pleas ure to be of aid to others and to show some act of friendliness his character stands out as one of firm virtues enhanced^by a re markable activity in showing many little courtesies and in everyday friendliness john woolman believed all men alike in regard to their value ir the sight of god as true men help ing their brothers daily and being friendly to all many points in the life of wool man and his somewhat radical views aroused interesting discus sion and the application of his
