cision of the club to devote the profits of the performances to a worthy charitable cause two per formances will be given in south bethlehem at the time of the spring recess the project of a trip on the road was discussed at some length with the result that it seems sure to become a reality this year the only uncertainty being whether the student-body will re spond heartily enough to the call for candidates to ensure a compe tent cast the first try-out meeting will be held in drown hall on saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock the next try-outs will take place tuesday evening at 7.30 in drown hall the show and new men will be given every opportunity to make good specialty acts are also encouraged to report at this time as good specialties will be given a place in the show discussion groups still popular the first wednesday evening discussion group meeting after the holidays was held in the various fraternity houses and dormitory sections on january 10 the subject discussed was the triumph of loyalty as applied mainly to the life and work of isabella thoburn miss thoburn was the pioneer woman missionary in india and through her untiring efforts she succeeded in establishing the best bible schools high shcools and christian colleges in the country she worked incessantly and thoroughly and thus accomplished much in the development of the mission field in india she was ever loyal to her trust and in the close of her career she could look back over a life filled with triumph after triumph so versatile were her missionary activities that she became leader in almost all the societies institu tions hospital work and y w c a the various groups discussed the qualities of leadership ideals and loyalty and many interesting dis cussions arose under the direction of the leaders dr drinker presides at pittsburgh meeting dr h s drinker president of the pennsylvania forestry associa tion attended a meeting of citizens of western pennsylvania at pitts burgh last saturday afternoon to arrange for a convention which will be held in pittsburgh next july in the interests of conservation a committee was organized to make arrangements for the midsummer meeting of the pennsylvania for estry association to be held in con nection with t h c conservation movement men on the firing line dr richards tells where men must take positions in indus trial fields and how chosen metallurgists banquet hotel allen the scene of gather ing of professors and seniors last wednesday on wednesday night december 11 the senior mets and el mets gave a banquet at the hotel allen for dr richards and prof roush those present were dr j w richards prof g a roush b h jacobson n i stotz w h s youry lieutenants h w hosford and 0 l wolfard tj s n c a haller l b kramer y zakikawa and h a appel after dinner toastmaster jacob son called upon dr richards to speak his subject was on the firing line he said that his subject was taken from the present war many men who are essential to the war never see the trenches the same is true in life many men who do not reach the high po sitions in business are essential these men as a rule have very limited education the aim of the university is to prepare men and place them on the firing line we can not keep up to modern science unless we know the funda mentals these are taught in col lege to do things we must know and be associated with men who are doing things colleges give us an intimate contact and a common ground on which to meet these men the first two years of college are spent on theory and funda mentals the junior year prepares one for original work and in the senior year you meet men and hear men speak who are doing and have done things college men must step in and take their places when they are gone the question is often raised as to whether a college professor or stu dent should do original research for a man to have the subject which he teaches before him in a graphic and practical way he should do some work in it this work is of a research character a student should begin research work while under the supervision of men who know a great deal about the subject at college he has the best chance he ever will have a man can earn a living without a college education but a learned man can earn more the college man is prepared to lead men and to advance learning to have a leader is essential in every under taking and the college man does this to advance knowledge is necessary for if we did not do so the world would become stagnant in study we do not want to learn the problems of olden times what interests us are the problems con fronting mankind today we can often learn how to go about the present day problems from those already worked out so a knowledge of them is one of the essentials of education but the big things for us to do are the present problems prof roush was next asked to speak tis subject was college friendships ' ' he said that he felt competent to speak on this subject because he could say that he never had a real friend in college now he realizes what this has meant to him some continued on ftfth page freshman class has good basketball material
