lafayette wins basketball game lehigh playing in poor form j loses first game of the series score 40 to 25 small floor handicaps varsity dynan's foul goal shooting features game lafayette proved to be a stronger opponent than had been antici pated and succeeded in getting the long end of a 40 to 25 score at phillipsburg last saturday even ing the small floor proved a handicap to the lehigh five the brown and white team played way off form throughout the game and were unable to ' penetrate the close guarding of the lafayette quintet only four field goals were obtained by lehigh while the maroon and white five were able to score eleven twenty-five fouls were called on each team lehigh making seventeen count while lafayette scored eighteen the first half ended with the score 18 to 14 in favor of lafayette in this half kennedy and crichton each scored one goal while ander son lafayette's star forward,,,caged three lehigh s forwards were so closely guarded that neither was able to score a field goal but dynan kept lehigh in the running by caging ten fouls out of fourteen at tempts both kennedy and w v mc carthy were obliged to retire from the game the first part of the second half because of personal fouls w^hile weldon retired for lafayette barrett who went in for mccarthy played excellent ball and caged lehigh s only two goals during the half berg re placed kennedy and thomas the visitors have an exceptionally strong team this year and among the larger colleges which have met defeat at their hands is carnegie tech whom they defeated at tech by a score of 27 to 22 friday morning nature and wild life in alas ka will be the subject of an illus trated talk to be given by mr h w dußois in the palace theatre friday morning at 11 o'clock mr dußois is at present a consulting engineer in philadelphia and is a prominent member of the ameri can institute of electrical engi neers he is a lehigh man of the class of 92 and is well known to the students for a similar lecture was given last year by him and proved to be popular his address this year should be even more in teresting for in addition to many slides which he has to illustrate his talk there are also quite a number of unique scenes in moving pic tures mr dußois uses these films and slides to great advantage in making his talk of real value and at the same time interspersies them with many remarks and stories that are sure to keep the audience in a good humor ■having spent many years in this american possession the lecturer is quite capable of explain ing things in a way which will be enjoyed by everyone who hears him continued on fifth page evening class teachers entertain second conference between mo ravian college for women and lehigh under the auspices of the de partment of education and even ing schools the second annual ' ' conference between moravian college for women and lehigh university was held last saturday evening teachers of the evening classes of both institutions as well as students in the courses of educa tion attended conferences of educators are usually characterized by thought ful discussion of educational prob lems this one in addition to this characteristic was featured by a unique game entitled call again by an excellent speech songs and refreshments the ab sence of all formality contributed largely to the success of the even ing the first part of the evening was spent in getting acquainted by means of the call again game following this came refreshments prepared and served by the mora vian students prof s h gapp followed with a short speech in which he lauded the efforts of the teachers in helping to ameri canize the foreigner his re marks credited the feeling that perhaps the americans themselves need americanization he ex pressed the earnest desire that these latter should not be neg lected the remainder of the evening was given over to songs by the stu dents of both institutions cheers for fern sem lehigh and hughes closed the conference the idea of these conferences was first suggested by prof hughes the first one was held in the 1915-1916 collegiate year and the success that attended it was the biggest inducement for its repe tition to prof hughes and the young ladies of the seminary his able associates in carrying through his plans a large measure of credit is due civils hold monthly meet w e carpenter 02 gives talk on the experiments at the brooklyn disposal plant illustrated various phases of the work con ducted shown by means of lantern slides last thursday evening the civil engineering society held its regu lar monthly meeting in the wireless room of the physics building the meeting was called to order by sec retary l j breen who after con ducting a short business session introduced the speaker of the even ing mr w e carpenter c.e 02 mr carpenter is in the employ of the borough of brooklyn which for the past five years has been con ducting experiments on a sewage disposal plant to be constructed in the twenty-sixth ward of that city with the aid of lantern slides he explained the various experiments which were conducted and the re sults which have been obtained from them his ta,lk in b,rief fol lows the problem of finding a sani tary method for the disposal of the sewage of new york city has been considered by engineers for the past ten years at present the sew age is dumped into lower new york bay and it is only a matter of several years before the harbor will be unable to receive it all through jamaica bay there is a great deal of oyster raiding in spite of the board of health and these oysters filled with quite a volume of filth are sold to the unsuspect ing public this water is also used by many for pleasure purposes such as bathing and boating and it should undoubtedly be kept free from filth '' this problem was greatly com plicated by politics so that not until 1912 was its solution really attempted in that year a board of apportionment was appointed by the borough of brooklyn which appropriated 4,000,000 for a sew age disposal plant to be erected in the twenty-sixth ward 50,000 of this was to be spent in experiment ing to solve any problems that might arise the problem of the twenty-sixth ward was only a minor problem of the second bor ough of a great city the disposal of sewage is di vided into two parts the prelimi nary treatment and the oxidation treatment or the sprinkling treat ment the preliminary treatment consists in passing the sewage through large imhoffi tanks which are made up of two compartments in the first of these sedimentation occurs the solid matter settles out and slides down into the second or digestion compartment the sludge remains here for two or three hours where it becomes di gested by means of bacteria until it is less in quantity and less of fensive in quality the oxidation treatment con sists in passing the sewage into the imhoff tanks where the solid material is removed and then dis charging it as a milky liquid on the filter beds five minutes later it apears at the bottom of the filter as a clear liquid the filters con sist of a pile of stones covered with a thin film the film soakes up the sewage last friday morning in packer hall h j heuchel 19 was elected assist ant manager of football receiving 208 votes g h gildersleeve 19 and r s jennings 19 the other candidates for the position re ceived 110 and 102 votes respect ively l a dawson 17 urged that the arcadia fee of fifty cents be paid by those who had not paid for this year a number have not paid the list including 61 seniors 60 juni ors 94 sophomores and 114 fresh men the arcadia is badly in need of money to pay bills ij mckay 17 president of the arcadia spoke about the honor system and the coming finals the arcadia needs the support of the students to uphold the honor sys tem the system was decided up on by the students with the ar cadia as the nominal head the cadia only as the head this board has passed a rule that a man shall not leave the room dur ing the finals for more than ten minutes the purpose of this rule is to protect the weak man it was announced that the next university dance will be held on february 17 ia drown hall arts and science club meets thursday evening debate will feature evening's program contest with lafayette aarranged the january meeting of the arts and science club will be held next thursday evening in drown hall at 7.45 o'clock the feature of the evening will be a debate on the question resolved that all in dustrial disputes should be settled by q board of arbitration with com pulsory powers j m rapoport 17 and c r flory 18 will de fend the affirmative side opposed by w w gilmore 17 and j d sourber 19 each speaker will be allowed five minutes to present his arguments and two and a half minutes for refutation of those of his opponent professors blake stewart and palmer will officiate as judges the object of the debate is a two fold one to revive if possible an interest in debating at lehigh ; to select a team fitted to meet the business club men in a debate on an economic subject in february a debate with lafayette college has been arranged for the spring term and it is purposed by a pro cess of elimination to select those men from the student-body most capable of upholding the brown and white side the competition for a place on the university team is not re stricted to those taking part in these debates but is open to all de siring to enter eligibility will be decided solely on the merits of the contestant for a position any per sons desiring to compete shall hand their names to either w m hart man 17 or c e twombly jr 17 junior class meeting a meeting of the junior class was held after the college meeting last friday practically no busi ness except the affixing of the an nual dues was transacted soccer team loses to penn red and blue second team wins fast game from lehigh on franklin field three goals to one ragged shooting loses contest for the brown and white eleven by losing to the university of pennsylvania second team satur day the lehigh soccer team lost the championship of the state intercollegiate league the score stood 3 to 1 when the whistle blew the game was played on franklin field and although the field was in bad condition the game was fast throughout it was the aggressiveness of the philadelphia team combined with the ragged shooting of the brown and white players that brought victory to the red and blue time after time the lehigh forwards would dribble the ball down the field and have excellent opportuni ties to drive the ball past barba the opposing goal-tender but the majority of the shots went wild only one goal resulted in the first half of play and that came from a pretty shot by clothier who received a pass from byrne the playing of the lehigh back field was strong and they kept the ball out of danger most of the time in the second half the lehigh forwards rushed the ball up the field but could not score perm rallied and carried the ball into le high's territory again and byrne scored perm's second goal soon afterward lewis took the ball down the field and netted the ball for lehigh s solitary tally the teams played evenly for the rest of the game lehigh fighting hard to change the tide of victory but their efforts went for naught just as the whistle blew hough scored perm's third goal rau lewis and barkley put up an excellent game for lehigh and it was due mainly to the strong de fensive work of the brown and white goalkeeper that pennsyl vania did not run up a higher score the line-up
