team defeats lafayette five game one of fastest and roughest of the season viewed by enor mous crowd score 31=20 mccarthy and dynan star forwards put up one of best games seen here this year individual playing strong in a fast hard-played rough house game of basketball the team defeated our ancient rivals from ' ' down the river " by a score of 31 20 in taylor gym wednesday night the game room was packed with the students of the two col leges and enthusiasm ran high lafayette drew first blood when anderson scored a neat foul goal after a moment's play he immedi ately followed this by shooting a pretty field goal lehigh then got started when dynan counted on a foul goal mccarthy then con tributed two pretty goals from the floor and from then on lehigh was never headed the first half ending with the score 17-13 in their favor immediately after the start of the second half dynan caged a pretty goal after receiving a beauti ful pass from wysocki from this on the passing and general all around playing of the brown and white quintet was superior to any thing that they have shown this year for lehigh the work of dynan was exceptionally fine he scoring a total of seventeen points and playing a general all around good game kennedy through his bril liant defensive work prevented many more lafayette scores he also did some very clever passing captain crichton and wysocki gave a very good exhibition and worked into the general scheme of team work very well but after all the man whose work did much toward deciding the result of the game is mccarthy when the go ing seemed bad at the start of the game he gave the team the confi dence it needed when he put them in the lead by caging two beautiful goals from the floor in fact all through the early part of the game when a point was needed he came across with a goal his defensive work was equally brilliant break ing up and interrupting lafa yette's passing game his goal from beyond the middle of the floor towards the end of the game was as pretty a goal as has been made in taylor gym this year lafayette's greatest offensive as set was anderson who scored eighteen of his team's twenty points next to him weldon prob ably did the most for lafayette when the game got rough and some of his teammates got over zealous he alone played the game cleanly and hard scott's work was also deserving of much praise but also of much censure his rough playing costing his team several points the line-up : lehigh positions lafayette mccarthy f anderson dynan f weldon crichton c paulson kennedy g taylor wysocki g scott by modifying it whether the old lehigh yell has been improved by the changes it has undergone is the question which is here asked the yell has changed and the method's of lead ing cheers have been modified and the question again arises as to whether this change has been for the better the writer a graduate in the class of 1896 points out some of the striking changes which have taken place it should be of interest to note whether these changes have given a better yell and whether they have not con tributed toward robbing lehigh of a standard yell the communica tion follows : the writer never can forget the thrill experienced when a school boy in washington he first heard the old lehigh yell come pealing across the field as the famous 89 football team then touring the south started in to pay its respects to its opponent 1100 bm ray ! hoo rah ray ! ray ray ray lehigh-h-h ! he thought then and still thinks that it was and is unapproachable as a college cheer in its combina tion of upstanding lehighs not barks and yelps it was also during the writer's time that the hi hi or dutch yell was evolved and this with the regular yell and the individual cheer constituted the entire bat tery of verbal artillery but as sam bernard used to say suf ficiency what the boys couldn't do to the welkin was not worth do ing this outburst of ancient history and opinion is due primarily to the emotions engendered by a visit to bethlehem last autumn to see a football game — the first in many moons the writer saw some good football but he didn't hear any good cheering in fact he has won dered since whether he heard any cheering at all he saw a young gentle-man several of them garbed all in snowy white 1 , lead with all the graces of a toscanini or rather creatore the assembled multitudes
