the first concert of the spring season was given by the combined musical clubs of the university last evening in mealey's audi torium allentown the large crowd present was sufficient evi dence of the success of the affair as every one enjoyed the concert greatly as well as the dancing which followed it is hoped that an nual concerts of this nature will be continued the concert started at 8 o'clock and included an excellent arrange ment of vocal and instrumental numbers the hawaiian trio again made a hit as they did in the last concert the solos as well as the violin duet demonstrated the fact that the club is not lacking in individual talent the mandolin and glee clubs gave fine renditions of their numbers showing what can be done by consistent re hearsals and practice the music for the dancing which started immediately after the con cert was furnished by white's dixie banjo orchestra the program follows : 1 hannah t g shepard glee club 2 hawaiian medlies messrs holmes kennedy and green 3 ultimatum thos allen mandolin club 4 tenor solo se lected mr covell 5 violin duet selected messrs barthold and brockmani 6 medlies mandolin club 7 baritone solo selected mr sourber 8 hawaiian medlies messrs holmes kennedy and green ; 9 on the sea d buck , glee club 10 alma mater com bined clubs deutscher verein meets at dr drinker's home final plans for the presentation of the american ambulance corps movement in the grand opera house tomorrow evening were made at a committee meeting yes terday afternoon in the home of mrs robert p linderman dela ware avenue in the unavoidable . absence of major a b desaulles who is heading the local project the meeting was in charge of mrs guy r johnson the main business consisted of reports from members of the com mittee of university students who are working in conjunction with the citizens interested r w wol cott 18 chairman of the student committee reported hearty co-oper ation in regard to tomorrow's meet ing on the part of local alumni of the university and other represen tative citizens of the bethlehems and allentown many of the in fluential men in this section are strongly backing the movement chairman wolcott reported also that thirty students of the univer sity have expressed their desire to enroll in the unit of the american ambulance corps to sail for france in june depending on the sanction of their parents and other circum stances it was brought out that four undergraduates of lehigh are already in the field service of the american ambulance corps on the french front two others have enrolled and will sail from new york april 21 on the espagne for france gratifying progress in the sale of tickets for saturday night's meet ing was reported tickets for stu dents will be available at the opera house at the special price of ten cents emory pottle who will give the address tomorrow evening arrived from new york today mr pottle will be the guest of honor at the an nual banquet of the class of 1918 this evening in response to a number of in quiries which have been made of the faculty as to whether it is pro posed to grant diplomas to mem bers of the senior class who desire to enter into goverment service prior to the regular completion of their courses in june a special meeting of the faculty was held last tuesday it was decided that no occasion exists for considering such a course and commended to the student-body the advice given by major general leonard wood amd announced at the college meet ing at princeton last week the letter received by the authorities at princeton from gen eral wood reads in part as fol low : by all means urge the men at princeton to stay where they are follow their college work and push the military instruction to the limit under captain heintzelman the situation has not developed to the extent which in any way justifies their leaving college or trying to volunteer at the present time 1 will let you know when in my opinion it is time for further action george sawtelle 17 who practi cally finished the work called for by his course and in the opinion of the head of the department of chemistry in which he was study ing and of the professors con cerned will under the peculiar cir cumstances of his case be gradu ated he received his commission as lieutenant in the army and orders to report at fort leaven worth april the fifteenth he will be granted his diploma at com mencement in june junior banquet tonight opening baseball game postponed the junior banquet will be held tonight at 7 30 o'clock sharp the affair which will take place at the hotel allen allentown promises to be an event which will long be remembered the list of speakers is an especi ally attractive one the list in cludes emory pottle of the ameri can ambulance field service in france professor j l stewart and professor b l miller short snappy talks will be given by a bach l7 w a richards 17 r w wolcott 18 white's banjo orchestra has been engaged to entertain while the menu is being served and original souvenirs willbe given to all present prom notice the deutscher verein met last wednesday evening as the guests of dr drinker at his home on the campus the feature of the meet was a play die eifersiichtigen " given by five members of the verein the play a farce comedy in one act written by roderick benedix was well given it is filled with many humorous scenes and the situations which the main char acters alfons and leopold get in to because of the characteristic trait of their wives an overpower ing jealousy kept the audience in a continuous uproar singing by the entire verein fol lowed the play the remainder of the program consisted of a short sketch of goethe's life by j a bishop 18 and several violin selections by w g barthold 18 the latter accompanied by prof blake at the piano rendered three numbers with skill all of which were highly appreciated a talk by dr drinker closed the evening's program coach keady has practically given up all hopes of playing the opening game of the season with new york university tomorrow the inclement weather . the early part of the week just added enough moisture to the ground to keep the field from drying out the team has been working hard and from a crowd of men a well rounded machine is gradually be ginning to appear the southern trip will start next tuesday when the team leaves south bethlehem the first game will be played against georgetown on april 4 the next two days washington and lee will be met saturday the university of vir ginia will be played and the trip completed fourteen men will make the trip business trip juniors notice under the new plan which pro vides for a managing editor the 1917-18 brown and white board organized last wednesday after noon at the february business meeting the board considered an amendment to the constitution which provided for this new office and also the advisability of chang ing the name of the brown and white the managing editor might be styled the news editor and will determine the news policy of the paper these duties which formerly were vested in the editor in-chief and assistant editors are now assumed by the new officer in the future the editor-in-chief will control the editorial policy of the paper and conduct competitions for editorial positions on the board he will retain his present duties as president of the board considering the duties of the edi tor-in-chief too weighty and also to give him more time to formulate the editorial policy this change was made heretofore he has been the assignment editor in combination with these other duties now at the last regular meeting in march when the election takes place the assistant editors are voted upon by members of the board to become editor-in-chief or managing edlitor by this method experienced men succeed to the highest editorial po sitions in the past one of the assistant editors has gone back to a position as reporter with the title of associate editor in this position his past experience is lost but by the new arrangement it is placed to some use by further developing it at the meeting held wednesday afternoon f w hukill 18 was elected editor-in-chief l c fen stermacher 18 to the new position of managing editor and f d nawrath 19 and r w ludlow 19 assistant editors , for some time the brown and white board has been considering the matter of changing the name of the paper although the name ' ' brown and white ' ' has prevailed since the founding of the paper in 1894 it is felt that lehigh's news paper along with other colleges should bear a name less indicative of a preparatory institution in addition it is urged that a name which of itself announces by what institution the paper is published is much to be preferred to one of which this is not true and to one which several high schools bear ex amples of a more specific name are suggested by the cornell sun tale new.s columbia spectator the pennsylvanian the princetonian and the buchnellian while the board thinks a step such as this advisable it would wel come any opinions or suggestions on the matter it believes that every subscriber every student and every alumnus feels an interest in this matter and the board is highly de sirous for their opinions and sug gestions in view of the approaching dances during junior week the prom committee wishes to call at tention to a detail which should be given attention the chaperones who attend the dance are doing a favor to the class and to every one who attends the function very of ten they are neglected not inten tionally but carelessly according ly the committee requests that special pains be taken by every one who attends the dance to arrange programs for the chaperones pre vious experiences have shown that this attention is very much appre ciated by the ladies the committee are you a square peg in a round hole is the title of an in teresting article appearing in the american magazine for april writ ten by herman schneider 94 mr j schneider is dean of the school of engineering at the university of \ cincinnati at which place he inau gurated the system of co-operative study in this article dean schnei der says in part : there is a new psychology of w r ork one of its most inspiring principles is that the man who makes a failure on one job is likely to make a success of the job of an opposite type assuming of course that he fails in the face of real effort this is the significance of failure ; it points the way to an oc cupation which means success fail ure at one job is not a calamity it is an indication every failure is a guide-post to success two boys came into our co-op erative course together they were of the same age both unusually bright both decidedly of a me chanical bent one of them was put to work in a railroad shop the other at a lathe in a manufacturing shop the duties of the first boy were ever varying he had to keep mind and body on the jump the duties of the other boy were uni form and repetitive both of them were dissatisfied and began to slump in their work the student in the railroad shop was slow in getting his mind adapted to new circumstances the one at the lathe on the contrary had the type of mind that grasps things quickly that revels in kaleidoscopic varia tion so we had them exchange jobs both then did excellent work for the rest of the course every individual has certain general traits every kind of work had certain general characteristics the problem is to interpret the traits of the individual classify the characteristics of the job and then guide the individual into the job for which he is supremely fitted this is the one real employment problem there are very many human characteristics but there are a few broad and general ones which fre quently make for success of failure there is a type of man who wants to get on the same car every morn ing get off at the same corner go to the same shop ring up at the same clock stow his lunch in the same locker go to the same machine and do the same class of work day after day another type of man would go crazy under this routine he wants to move about meet new people see and do things the first is settled the second is roving the first might make a good man for a shop manufacturing a standard product the second might make a good railroad man or a good out door carpenter certain men blend into any en vironment adapt themselves to any emergency set off against them is the man w t ho never gives to en vironment or emergency who is bound up in his own inflexible ways the first type produces ex cellent salesmen ; the second splen continued on fifth page the following men have been ap pointed in the respeetiye courses to collect the junior class dues
