1922 epitome board holds election price five cents tennis season to open soon lehigh aero club formed vol xxvil no 45 r eastman elected editor-in chief c h jagels assistant editor plans made for annual first contest of season to be held against strong navy team at annapolis interf raternity basketball season in full swing much interest shown faculty grants petition to form society four men to be selected as pilots swarthmore to be first opponent of the brown and white team three of last year's team back other good players in college psi u easily defeats theta delta chi use curtis planes squad in good shape johnson out with sprained ankle pfeiffer to handle the mound work expect to enter one or two ma chines in intercollegiate air race this spring at a recent meeting of the 1922 epitome board the officers for the coming year were elected robert eastman was elected editor-in chief ; c h jagels assistant editor and j l landenberger art editor n p sanborn has be come business manager through the competition that has been run in the first part of the year with g m brumbaugh as assistant man ager at the meeting various plans were discussed for the publication of next year's book plans were laid out for getting the work covered in a systematic way and so that the material would be covered while it is fresh the editors intend to study the various college year-books and try to make the 1922 epitome the best one pub lished it is also planned to get a more personal side to the publica tion and to get it out at a smaller cost to the university societies and clubs a new advertising system is being organized and if all turns oat well the"i)ook should be pfo duced at a more satisfactory rate than before the board has decided to hold several more meetings during this year in order to effect a more com pact organization the next meet ing will be held monday night april sth in drown hall the call for the 1920 tennis team will soon take place wlith the fair weather continuing the university courts in front of the physics building will be in good condition for the first match which is with rutgers manager hall is quite anxious to see some good new ma terial out for the team and it is de sired that all men with some racket ability w t ill turn out tennis is now recognized as a minor sport by the lehigh athletic association and all men partici pating in a sufficient number of games will be awarded a small l this enables men to earn their letter at lehigh in another branch of sports since tennis is now a minor sport it will necessi tate the election of a manager for the team this year a manager will be elected to take charge of the team next season sophomores and juniors are eligible to fill this po sition and any men interested should call f a hall at the sigma phi house before monday morn ing fromi all indications lehigh should have one of the strongest tennis teams it has had in years with the old men back hall estes and mercur which will serve as an substitutions : nourse for wrights ; sanborn for powles ; reed for hartung ; hartung for gott referee boquel the psi upsilon basketball five defeated the theta delta chi quin tet in an inter-fraternity basket ball game by the score of 21-8 the first half was close and psi upsilon came out on the long end of an 8-5 score the second half was a little more to the advantage of psi upsilon and they soon ran up a large score on a number of succes sive field goals the goals were pretty evenly divided nearly every man on the team getting one ex cept for the two freshmen reade and wight who together dropped in 5 two-pointers sehring and lennon were the best on the theta delta chi five the former caging two baskets and the later playing a good guarding game psi upsilon . theta successful season may be looked forward to the most promising new candidates for the team are for the past few weeks the la crosse squad has been practicing diligently to get in shape for the coming games about twenty-five to thirty men have been coming out daily and practice has taken a very favorable turn quite a number of the last year's squad are out again and coach o'neill is whipping these into shape as a nucleus for his team there is quite an abund ance of men for almost every po sition and the defensive depart ment is particularly strong in hav ing four of last year's men name ly enslin straub wilson and brewer the last named did not play on the team last year but has been showing up very well this season in practice davidson and schultz are showing up well in the offensive and wey and gonzales are battling for the center position nesselbush morrow and jenness are showing up in old time form and bid fair to make a good play ing combination to this list has hcoi added a very formidable player in the person of spengle who played lacrosse with annapolis for two years at the guard position it is very probable that he will hold down a similar berth this year as a whole the prospects for a winning combination this year are very good the first contest for this season is scheduled for april 10 with the naval academy at annapolis this will projbably be one of the brown and white's hardest games for the annapolis team is always a strong contestant for intercol legiate honors this year is no ex ception for the naval school is said to have one of the strongest teams in college circles chi phis win in last minutes naval engineering students meet athletic committee with the intention of keeping lehigh up to date in intercollegiate activities the lehigh aero club has recently been formed for the purpose of entering planes piloted by lehigh men in the intercolleg iate air race the club will be equipped with curtis j n ix planes the faculty has according ly granted the club's petition to enter the meet . lehigh s war record has been most admirable and among her service men are included those who have served their country excep tionally well in both army and naval aviation among these men there are still a dozen of them now in college who have organized and formed this club they include the following : r s bellman h l chisholm s clarke v e john son l p leverich n j mc crindie h r mel-linger w h nowell f s richards l h richards and r a wilbur two planes will be rented from the curtis company and four members will be selected from the club according to previous experi ence to pilot them in order to enter this meet which will be rep resented by all the leading ameri can colleges it is necessary to en roll the lehigh club in the ameri can aero club which has inaug urated and fostered this intercol legiate meet the race will be for time of flight starting at mineola on may 7th stopping at harvard yale williams cornell and princeton and concluding at mineola this recent plan is something which has never been tried by any college be fore and should lehigh emerge victor it would mean much for the university a meeting of the lehigh uni versity athletic committee was held yesterday afternoon among the subjects discussed was the rul ing which prohibits varsity men trying out for assistant managers of sports fire on south mountain rifle club rodney beck and clarence war ner both men of ability the latter playing on the lehigh team of 1916 this year a more attractive schedule is presented than ever be fore the teams being played are exceptionally strong hence all the more credit to the team for each match from which it emerges a winner the schedule is as fol lows : april 17 rutgers april 21 moravian may 8 open may 12 muhlenberg may 15 navy may 19 perm state may 22 lafayette may 26 lafayette may 28 c c of n y may 29 columbia denotes away musical clubs to resume rehearsals the combined musical clubs will begin regular rehearsals again next wednesday on account of the mustard and cheese rehearsals every wednesday night in drown hall the glee club will rehearse in the choir room of the church of the nativity under the direction of mr shields on wednesday nights at 7 30 p.m the mandolin club will rehearse in drown hall at the same time and all men of both clubs are asked to show up regularly plans have been under way the past week for the giving of a concert in new york city on the 7th of may under the auspices of the new york lehigh club and the rehearsals are being renewed with this object in view men who have ordered pictures of the clubs and have not yet received them may obtain them from k m downes at the delta tau delta house tau beta pi pledges nine men a small forest fire in the timber west of thei boundary line and ad joining sayre park occurred wed nesday afternoon though no dam age was wrought sayre park was threatened and if it had not been for the efforts of some of the men in the dormitories and houses on the campus who helped to put the fire out it might have caused serious damage students visit lehigh seventy students from sheffield school yale and eight from car negie tech visited the local plant of the bethlehem steel works tuesday afternoon these men are making a tour of various steel plants and foundries in the eastern part of pennsylvania in the course of their stay a number visit ed lehigh to look over the grounds buildings and equipment on wednesday afternoon the rifle club shot its eighth match this resulted in the highest score made so far a total of 937 points were made which exceeded the previous high mark by eleven points practice is held from 2 30 to 5:30 and 9:00 to 5:00 o'clock on saturday the score was as follows : match no 8 lerch 190 compher 188 davidson 187 holmes ' 186 voss 186 total 937 coming from behind with the good playing of craig brunner and dawson the chi phi basket ball team overcame the lead of the alpha tau omega five and won out during the last five minutes by the score of 14-10 alpha tau omega took the lead to begin the game oir eastman's long goal and had the better of the argument all through the first half at the be ginning of the second half brun ner and craig were put in the game and things began to look a little different craig caged a pretty goal and carpenter's three successive fouls tied the score at 10 brunner counted a long basket from the center line and dawson s clever shot from under the basket brought the score to 14-10 after two more hotly contested minutes the game ended with chi phi on the all last year's varsity material with the excep tion of one man and bids fair to be one of the strongest collegiate teams in the east this season baseball is one of the most mv portant little quaker sports and has taken on new life this year with the coming of a new coach dr edward j lafitte formerly of the detroit tigers and also a football star at georgia tech their outfield composed of carter w|iese and larkin needs no intro duction to lehigh followers and ogden who has been their main stay in the box and who defeated the championship brown and white nine of three years ago is also well of a naval engineering so ciety to further the interests of the students in that course meetings of such societies which are more or less informal give the student a broader insight into the prac tical side of the subjects he is studying at college due to the fact that this course is the latest one in the curriculum of the uni versity it being established only last year the students have not had the opportunity to form a society before this step has been approv ed by a number of students in the course and sanctioned by professor chapman of the naval engineer ing course plans were made whereby a number of men prominent in the shipping world will be secured as speakers for the meetings to be held next year and if possible sev eral meetings will be held this year if all the students taking naval engineering take an active interest in the society there will be no question as to its success the officers elected were j l landenberger president ; david green vice-president ; e m ens lin secretary a s thaeler treasurer nine engineers of the junior class were pledged tau beta pi members at the chapel exercises on wednesday march 31 includ ing carl richard berner edward warren
