the pennsylvania-lehigh soccer game scheduled for last saturday was called off due to the bad condi tion of the ground this game was lehigh s last pennsylvania inter collegiate league game for the present season at present the penn team is leading this league in the number of games won the philadelphia team has defeated both haverford and lafayette le high has won from haverford and lost to lafayette lafayette de feated lehigh and lost to penn haverford lost to both pennsyl vania and lehigh both managements are anxious to have the season end before christmas and in all probability the play-off of this postponed game will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2.30 lehigh will begin playing her games in the blue mountain league in january inter-fraternity bowling league the interfraternity bowling league will open immediately after the christmas holidays the schedule has not been drafted but will be out before the holidays the following fraternities are en tered : chi phi alpha tau omega delta phi psi upsilon theta delta chi delta upsilon sigma nu phi gamma delta sigma phi phi delta theta delta tau delta beta theta pi chi psi kappa sigma phi sigma kappa theta xi sigma phi epsilon fraternity news with the sigma nu fraternity in their new house and the alpha tau omega about to enter their new home there are five fraterni ties on the campus the alpha tau omega's have had trouble in get ting water into their building but expect to be moved in by the first of next term three other fraternities are con templating building on the campus but at this time no definite an nouncements have been made notice the harrisburg club of the pennsylvania state college cordi ally invites all lehigh men to a university dance to be held at winter dale harrisburg on decem ber 27 this is the sixth univer sity dance held by the club and one of the big events of harrisburg s social season the pennsylvania arbitration and peace society is offering one hundred dollars in prizes to be competed for in the seventh an nual oratorical contest this con test is open to all college students in the state the winner in the state contest is eligible for the competition which selects repre sentatives to the national contest held each year at lake mohonk the conditions of the contest are : 1 any undergraduate student in a pennsylvania college or uni versity who has not previously won the first prize in a state contest is eligible to write and submit an ora tion upon international peace for the contest to be held in april 1916 2 where there is more than one contestant in any college or uni versity a local competition shall be held and the winner's oration sub mitted for the state contest 3 no oration used in another intercollegiate contest may be used in competition for the peace prizes 4 all orations must be received at the state headquarters 1000 bailey building philadelphia not later than march 10 1916 5 all orations must be limited to sixteen minutes in delivery 6 a board of judges will select the best six orations from those submitted to enter the final oral competition at a centrally located place on a convenient date about the middle of april 7 the winner of the state con test shall receive a prize of 75.00 and shall represent the state in a group contest of the winners of contests in nearby states for the selection of a contested but it does not show that the brown and white outpointed their oppo nents in the number of goals made from the field with seven to their credit as compared to six for roch ester it was rochester's game by virtue of the fact that the new yorkers throughout the entire game committed but one foul while they were given 13 free shots at the goal of which six were con verted into as many points ac cording to the rochester chronicle and democrat lehigh fighting every inch of the way was de feated but not disgraced it was rochester who scored first when woodams shot a basket soon after the game began a few min utes later with s score tied at 4 4 both lehigh and rochester struggled for fully five minutes without a score then rochester forged ahead when harper scored three goals in as many minutes while dynan was able to score but once for lehigh the first half ended with the score at 12-7 in favor of rochester in the second period the brown and white five scored four baskets from the floor and rochester but one captain hale of rochester was too closely guarded by brewster to permit of much individual work and on the whole the lehigh de fense gave him trouble it was hale who was largely responsible for lehigh s defeat last year and there is no small consolation in the fact that the lehigh forward pre vented him from adding any points to his team's score for rochester harper was most ly in the limelight particularly in the first half in the final period however ketcham the lehigh guard took his measure and pre vented further scoring from the field by his opponent dynan played most brilliantly for lehigh scoring eight of le high's 15 points brewster and ketcham too deserve mention for their close defensive game lehigh as a whole measured higher than rochester c a co-oper ating with the bethlehem steel company were favored with an excellent address on the making of a citizen by prof john l stewart a member of the associa tion advisory board and the head of the department of history and economics of lehigh university in his address it wasi made clear that a man should understand the history of our country and ap preciate the political and educa tional advantages that america offers to her citizens this talk was received with great applause as were the remarks made by several others present the united states examination for citizenship will take place at the northampton county court house easton monday january 3 1916 a banquet is being arranged to be given in the city hall south bethlehem for the new citizens the first friday in january to welcome the men who have been made citizens of the united states at the september and january ex aminations the committee in charge of the banquet consists of christian ammann chairman and frank j miller who are new citi zens j m frey secretary of the lehigh y m c a and george fonda representing the bethlehem steel company the program will consist of speeches by prominent men music and select reading the first class in naturalization for citizenship was organized last august and meetings were held twice weekly in the council cham ber of south bethlehem there were 37 men enrolled in this class and they took the examination for naturalization in the septem ber court easton northampton county the men passed the ex amination with few exceptions the nationalities of the men in cluded greeks swedes germans austrians hebrews italians scotch russians hungarians and slavs the second class with an enroll ment of 30 men representing practically the same nationalities was organized directly after the september examination and this is the class that takes the examina tion on january 3 mr becker the examiner in naturalization was very much in terested upon hearing of these classes and expressed his apprecia tion upon the great work being carried on by the y m c a the course in health habits is especially interesting and help ful food water cleanliness and pure air form the chief subjects of discussion this preparation for naturalization is really a much greater work than one would think at the first thought it is a country wide movement headed by some of the country's biggest personages the regular weekly meeting of the y m c a held in drown hall last sunday evening was ad dressed by mr s j chuan yale 14 post-grad 15 international secretary of the chinese students christian association of north america his subject was chris tian leadership china's urgent need mr chuan said : china is at the dawn of an extraordinary age she is achieving victories in science industry education etc with her great population and her unlimited national resources nothing will be too difficult for her but there is a doubt if this will make her strong to make china effective so that she may take her place as a great na tion strong christian leadership is needed china in coming in contact with other nations is not only con fronted with her own weaknesses but with the undesirable elements of foreign influence — her own weakness of opium given her by great britain and of a monarchic form of government the foreign temptations of smoking drinking materialism and many others a good many of the chinese stu dents think that industries will be the salvation of china but this alone will not be sufficient china does not want monopolies which will cheat the people she wants cap tains of industries who will help their employees china needs strong leaders confucianism alone is not strong enough though it has many vital principles to which china has owed its existence for many cen turies it lacks one essential and that is the dynamic force which forces people to do things this one essential which confucianism lacks is the heart of christianity china needs christianity not in name but in reality for the last half century china has had unsatisfactory diplomatic relations in the north russia is pressing china in the northeast japan in the east germany and in the south great britain from all these countries she has not re ceived fair treatment in order to meet this situation it has long been realized that china needs a strong army and navy but when we look to the situation at present in eu rope we hesitate about miiltary ef ficiency strong leaders are needed for the army and navy who will fight only for cause and justice men are needed who will distin guish between right and wrong leaders are needed in military af fairs with christ-like principles to carry on warfare it is the chinese students in this country who are preparing to be the future leaders in china there are at present about 1500 chinese students in this country they are responsible for the future of china but there is also a responsibility on the institutions where they are studying these institutions have the means for making future lead ers many of the students are re ceiving the best they can get but some are not the students have two words in mind when they come continued on fifth page the lehigh football team will play yale next year at new haven on october the fourteenth the other big game which has been ar ranged thus far is with penn state which will be played here on no vember eleventh arrangements are pending for another game of this caliber but manager bach is unable to an nounce as yet with whom it will be played an attempt was made to obtain games with the university of pennsylvania cornell washing ton and jefferson and colgate but arrangements could not be com pleted so these teams were dropped from consideration roy c hatter 07 is ill at his home in chicago 111 a few years ago mr hatter received several sprained ligaments during a track meet at palmerton pa while in the employ of the new jersey zinc company this accident resulted in blood poisoning and his present illness mr hatter was prominent in athletics while at lehigh arthur william wright 03 is at present assistant chief drafts man of the eastern steel company of
