visitors come with team four veterans lost to perm state prof reiter has organized a dancing class which meets every tuesday and friday from 4 to 5 p m the class started last tues day and is composed of 16 men the men are taught all of the latest dances a class in first aid is being or continued on fifth page the lehigh team work was far superior to that seen in recent games crichton put up the best game at center he has shown this season kirkpatrick and brewster at forward both showed up well with the latter having the advant rochester's particular weakness was in shooting foul goals harper could get only 6 out of 13 attempts and hale missed one brewster for lehigh caged 7 out of his 11 at tempts and thereby won the game lehigh and rochester each had 9 field goals the second period showed rochester in even superior form the new yorkers scored first with three points which tied the score throughout this entire period also the score seesawed back and forth first with rochester in the lead and then lehigh with rochester lead ing at 24 to 22 and only a few minutes to play brewster for le high scored a point on a foul goal and then followed with a field goal which put the brown and white ahead lehigh scored first after a few minutes of play when crichton tipped a goal from under the bas ket woodams for rochester soon shot a basket and from then on the scoring alternated from one side to the other toward the end of the first period the score stood 10 to 8 in favor of rochester the brown and white scored five points before the whistle blew when brewster caged a goal from the field and a foul goal and crichton tipped an other goal at the end of the period the score stood 13 to 10 in favor of lehigh in the fastest and best played game of basketball seen in taylor gymnasium this year lehigh de feated the university of rochester on wednesday night by a single point the final score being 25 to 24 the game was closely con tested throughout both lehigh and rochester assuming the lead at dif ferent times only to lose it again never was there more than three or four points difference in the scores of each team evening in the study room of drown hall at 7.15 p m the alumni club of the county has ar ranged to hold a dance for prepara tory school students on easter monday at york dr drinker and prof h r reiter will address the club and its guests the february meeting of the mining and geological society will be held thursday evening febru ary 10 at eight o'clock in the ge ology lecture room williams hall it is especially urged that every one who can possibly attend will do so as dr miller who has recently returned from an exten sive trip through south america will give an account of some of his experiences the nomination of officers for the coming year will take place at this meeting after the meeting re freshments will be served and a good time is assured to all who at tend the jersey club will hold a meeting in drown hall on friday february 11 prof j l stewart and yice-pres n m emery are to be the speakers of the evening the regular monthly meeting of the chinese club which was to have been held on tuesday febru ary 1 has been postponed until march 7 on wednesday evening febru ary 2 the first of the second term series of discussion meetings were held in the several fraternities and dormitory sections several changes were made in the distribution of leaders but the arrangement as it now stands will remain the same for the remaining three meetings of the year owing to the bad weather several of the meetings were called off but nevertheless there were quite a number of very interesting discussions at the delta phi house rev beekman led the talk on the shaping of a man's character in college to meet the conditions of his intended vocation one's life must necessarily be proportioned according to his physical mental and spiritual character he stated mr r w walters talked with the men at the theta delta chi on the subject of ' ' efficiency " " most men he claimed do not exert themselves to their utmost capacity but are content to get along with the least possible expenditure of energy mr walters read several extracts from one of wm james essays on this subject prof wilson led the meeting at the phi gamma delta house and striking out from the most popular lines of discussion spoke on varied topics of general interest to all the men at the sigma phi house dr j w richards conducted an especi ally interesting talk on ef ficiency efficiency may be of two kinds ' ' he said ' ' absolute and relative a man with high ideals and a worthy aim in life who strives his best to carry them out is a hundred per cent efficient this is an example of absolute efficiency however a man may have low ideals and little aim in life and be just as successful in carrying them out but here though he is still a hundred per cent efficient it is only relative efficiency continued on fifth page rev thaeler visited the kappa alpha lodge and the men talked over the subject of friendship chapel music chemistry returns university dance the next university dance will be given in drown hall on febru ary 12 rushton's the brown and white basketball team plays the team of union college at schenectady n y the union five have built up a considerable reputation so far this season having for one thing de feated clarkson tech 37-25 or by the same score that gave lehigh the victory over them however union has just re turned from a three game trip losing each game the line-up has been shifted from game to game so the brown and white ought to have little difficulty in winning from the visitors tomorrow night lehigh has been prosperous since the exams are over and are fresh for another victory coach har ring has g zimmer capt a section of the largest hoisting cable in , the world manufactured under a new design was tested recently at the fritz engineering laboratory of lehigh university the civil engineering department directed the operation and found that the new cable withstood a pull of 746,000 pounds in the tension test the cable was designed for use in the mayari mines in cuba of the spanish american iron com pany and will be attached to fifty ton ore cars operating on an in clined level extending for more than a mile with a grade of 25 per cent in addition to the high strength demonstrated in the lehigh test the new cable is expected to have superior wearing qualities due to its novel design this special con struction includes six strands of 37 wires each and an independent wire rope center meet prof reiter in the gymnasium on sat urday february 5 at 2 p m every football man is urged to at tend a class in advanced apparatus work in gymnasium is being organ ized by mr cassidy the class will meet every tuesday from 4 to 5 p m the men will be taught work on the horse parallel bars horizon tal bars rings tumbling and club swinging the class is open to all men who care to attend and the work will count toward their gym nasium hours the athletic committee had its picture taken yesterday at mccaa's studio the picture will be put in the epitome for the first time hoisting cable test in fritz laboratory union college next basket=ball opponents tomorrow afternoon taylor gym will be the scene of the first wrestling meet of the season when lehigh will have boston tech as their opponents the m i t wrestling team lost its first meet of the season to perm state last saturday evening by a 29 to 0 score the score does not show the rela tive strength of the two teams as can be seen by the fact that there was but one fall while three other bouts required extra six minute period's before a decision could be given the bouts throughout were very close and strongly contested last season the
