by rigid rules new york club will be first foe and should be strong increased number of cars require the observance of strict laws first game of season shows lehigh in good form records of seniors who are active on campus to be presented experienced naval acad emy splashers are favored to win score 50-31 lehigh strong the man whose record is re viewed in this issue is the president of the y m c a and of omicron delta kappa he is irv miles in this issue of the brown and white and from time to time hereafter a brief sketch will be presented of a senior who has attained more than average prominence in extra curricular activities college sings to be resumed again the initial college sing of the new year will be held at three o'clock sunday after noon in drown hall fol lowing the songfest tea and refreshments will be served it is the urgent desire of the y m c a whose offi cials are re-instituting the traditional get-to-gether that every man attend members of the glee club will be there to help make the after noon a success college spirit developes immeasurably as a result of these sings with this fact in mind the v men have provided for a series of sings which will be given during the earlier part of the second semester sergeant-major jiggs the bulldog mascot of the quan tico marines whom lehigh students will remember as having provided so much en tertainment during the foot ball game of last october is reported as being criti cally ill and in danger of death too many good things to eat during christmas seem to have wrecked the pampered dog's stomach so that prob ably he would be much less active today than when he last visited at lehigh once before when jiggs was sick an army airplane rushed him from quantico to washington d c he is listed as a sergeant-major oratorical con test revived deputation work interests y.m.c.a plans made to carry on advertising program alumni association changes some of the requirements tomorrow afternoon the le high splashers will challenge the navy at annapolis in their first meet of the 1927 season while it is early in the year the brown and white tankmen iprobably will hold up their end of the score even though navy be favored again tryouts for this meet were held yesterday afternoon when places for each event were se lected the men who probably will make the trip to the acad emy are raleigh hertzler wynn o'callaghan ellis lead er coxe hobbs hayes and webbe the relay team will be composed of four of the first five mentioned and as usual leader and coxe will stake all their pluck against navy's best man in this event hayes and hobbs will have cooper to contend with but the event should be a close one between hobbs and the fancy diver of the naval academy with the excellent material on hand the squad should pre sent a formidable appearance at all its meets this season the next meet will be on the 22nd with lafayette at home coach miller's proteges have not had a chance to display their talent as yet so that the two teams will be starting at par with the lehigh tankmen favored cyanide elects ten juniors coach bartlett's latest frosh basketball combination accom plished three things in its first game wednesday night in de feating the muhlenberg year ling quintet 50-31 the brown and white players decisively avenged the defeat sustained by their class football team at the hands of the cardinal and grey this fall the quintet won the first official game ever played on the new floor in the lower gym and also inaugurat ed the home season with a vic tory the game further re vealed that there are some fine players enrolled with the class of 1930 and that its team pos sesses great potential strength and should enjoy a successful season the contest although not characterized by exceptionally fast playing was keenly fought three of the visitors were ban ished by the referee not be cause of rough playing but rather because of the close guarding to which they resort ed smith scored first on a neat dribble ana borrelli followed with a foul baskets by sal mon and benhoff from close to the fifteen-foot line placed le high ahead but only temporar ily for borrelli looped a pret ty shot from an angle the continued on page four because of the great number of cars on the campus and careless driving of students several new traffic regulations have been formulated and will be put into operation in the very near future a commit tee consisting of the dean and two arcadia representatives lister 27 and holmes 27 convened to discuss the grow ing problem of automobile traf fic on the campus in order to control the situation to some degree it will be necessary for every student in the university who possesses an automobile to register his name address and license number at the dean's office reckless drivers will be severely punished it was further decided by the committee to confine parking space to certain designated areas of the campus the trustees of the univer sity have decided to inaugur ate the idea of one-way traffic on the campus the plans are complete and just as soon as the necessary placards are printed and posted the scheme will go into effect at present traffic on the campus is rath er slight but with the coming of spring the usual congestion of cars will once again appear it is with the hope of relieving this situation that the traffic regulations are made it is earnestly requested that the student body cooperate with the authorities and prevent the necessity of entirely doing away with automobiles as will no doubt follow if present con ditions continue to grow worse engineer's club held conference the varsity wrestling team will inaugurate the wrestling season this saturday afternoon when it meets the strong new york athletic club grapplers the meet will be held in tay lor gymnasium and will start promptly at three o'clock this team comes to lehigh with a reputation excelled by none in athletic club circles and will no doubt give the brown and white a very strong battle six years ago the new york a c came to lehigh and de feated the brown and white by a large score having in its ranks several olympic cham pions and men with other tit les beyond a doubt they will have men of this calibre this year who should furnish the best of opposition lehigh's team will in all probability be composed of the men who emerged victorious in last saturday's inter-class meet unless something unforeseen oc curs in the tryouts which are being held this week the new york a c has no entry in the 115 pound class and therefore coach sheridan has decided to put on a bout between two le high wrestlers to determine who will wrestle in that class against princeton a week from saturday this in all probab ility will be between eddie mcgovern and phillips lehigh's probable lineup is 115-pound class mcgovern versus phillips lehigh 125 pound class reed captain ; 135-pound class palm 145 pound class heilman 158 pound class long 175-pound class a lehr unlimited j levitz upsilon kappa is now tau delta phi five more to be selected before organization has completed enrollment dramatic society begins to drill dr richards prepared pro gram which showed sci ences at work local fraternity has been installed as national becomes tau chapter club now preparing an nual entertainment which is due in april irving beardsley miles en tered lehigh university in september 1923 after prepar ing at mount vernon high school he is enrolled in the college of electrical engineer ing while in high school he won an oratorical prize and served as cheer leader his genial personality and friendliness make him a popular man among men — and we hasten to add among the ladies as well hon esty conscientiousness congen iality strong character are a few of his many good qualities the success of his school life is shown by the activities list ed below he received two of the biggest honors which le high can bestow upon her un dergraduates that of member ship in 0 d x and sword and crescent besides these he has many other honors and chief among them is his presi dency of the lehigh y m c a a list of his college activi ties cyanide ; cotillion ; chairman of the arcadia booster com with the beginning of the new year activity has begun in earnest in mustard and cheese the contracts with wayburn for coaching have been signed and all branches of the organ ization are extending every ef fort to make the 1927 show bigger and better than ever the play committee met im mediately after the holidays and agreed upon a scenario submitted by mckinnon ket terrer and mckinnon were se lected to write the book since they submitted the two scen arios adjudged best by the com mittee pursel has made ar rangements for the home show to be played at liberty high school on monday april 18 and for a show in allentown at the lyric on the following day continued on page four as far as the itinerary is concerned philadelphia and reading are practically guar anteed by alumni in those cities and it is probable that scranton and possibly williams port will be visited the dean has permitted a full week of a decidedly profitable confer ence of the engineer's club a branch of the american asso ciation for the advancement of science was held during the christmas vacation in the franklin institute at philadel phia dr charles russ richards lehigh's president is one of the vice-presidents of the am erican association and is pres ident for a second time of the engineer's section the uni que program which featured the meeting was arranged by him he undertook to empha size the dependency of engin eering and industry upon the fundamental sciences to accomplish this he select ed recognized authorities in such fields as zoology astrono my biology chemistry geolo gy physics mathematics econ omics medicine and psycholo gy the men summoned to represent these sciences endea vored to point out the contacts which are made between indus try and particular sciences showing clearly an important inter-relation and a surprising dependency on the part of in dustry on all branches of sci ence at a meeting of the senior cabinet of the university y m c a on monday evening an extensive program of spring activities was formulated many important business transactions were completed a large number of the men have failed to remit payment for the y m c a pledges they signed last fall the organiza tion is in need of these out standing obligations and will appreciate the immediate re ceipt of all the negligent pledges all checks should be addressed to p e ketterer phi gamma delta house cam pus in regards to the deputation work of the cabinet nothing has been done since the open ing of school bob harrier chairman of the committee presented a plan which v.as readily adopted the commit tee will conduct an essay con test among the seniors attend ing the neighboring high schools and prep institutions this area includes those schools within a radius for one hun dred miles the winner of the contest which will take place in the latter part of february will receive a free week-end at bethlehem as the guest of the with the ensuing spring but a few months away the deputa tion groups have a tentative schedule of the high and prep schools at which they will de liver talks relative to the ob ject of creating an interest in lehigh teams of speakers will be selected at that time among the larger schools to be visited will be mercersburg lawrenceville williamsport and some of the bigger philadel phia schools another worthy piece of work of the v is that of sponsoring college sings sev eral are scheduled for the sun days following the mid-years the glee club quartet will ren der selections at the one to be given on sunday feb 13th the annual pamphlet of the y m c a has been received from the publishers it is sim ilar to that of last year being descriptive of the activities of the organization notice equipment now held by men who were on the foot ball soccer and cross-coun try teams must be returned immediately restricted stor age space makes it necessary to get this material out of the way as quickly as pos sible the cooperation of the members of these squads is asked managers in these three sports are expected to settle their records at the office of the graduate manager be fore the mid-year examina tions tau chapter of tau delta fraternity was formally insti tuted last saturday evening until it was accepted as the lehigh branch of tau delta phi this new chapter had been upsilon kappa the ceremonies were observ ed at the hotel bethlehem and were attended by national offi cers charles m mcconn dean of lehigh was the principle speaker he praised the or ganization for its high stan dard of membership require ments claiming that so long as it insisted upon superior scho lastic attainments its mem bership could not fail of reflects ing credit upon the fraternity continued on page four the new organization has fourteen undergraduate mem herman l baskin grand consul of the fraternity con ducted the ceremonies of in duction milton l goldstein consul for the third province which includes pennsylvania ; benjamin goldman advisor of the first province and hilliard bernstein grand scribe were national officers in attendance during the ceremonies in order to revive interest in the annual lehigh oratorical contest held on washington's birthday the trustees of the alumni association have dou bled the amount of prizes to be awarded and opened the con test to all students in the three upper classes washington's birthday this year is the occasion of a mid winter alumni day the ora torical contest will feature the program it is hoped that many undergraduates will aid in making the day successful for many years the junior oratorical contest was held on washington's birthday but dur ing recent years interest in this contest has noticeably lag ged the alumni desire to foster this contest according ly they have authorized the awarding of prizes totaling one hundred dollars prizes of twenty-five fifteen and ten dollars will be awarded for the first second and third best orations delivered by students in the departments of arts and science and business adminis tration ; and similar prizes will be awarded for the best ora tions by students in the schools of engineering in previous years the choice of subjects for the competition has been limited and an essay upon the chosen subject had to be submitted previous to the contest this year there is an unlimited choice of subjects and no preliminary essay will be required the purpose of these preliminary essays was to eliminate all but the most deserving contestants but such a method of elimination did not take into account the abil ity to speak before an audi ence which was in reality the main purpose of the contest those students desiring to enter the contest may do so by handing their names to pro fessor luch who has signified his willingness to aid any con testants who desire help either in the choice of a subject or in its development and delivery all men in the senior junior continued on page four the cyanide club held its first meeting of the year last wednesday evening at the kap pa sigma house on church street the regular meeting was called for the purpose of electing present juniors to membership and deciding the date of initiation an enjoy able spread was the first order of the evening after which the regular business meeting was conducted by president al raleigh the names of about twenty five prominent members of the junior class were then submit ted and from this list ten were selected those who were selected to fill the vacan cies soon to be left by this year's
