errors costly talks two firsts hanway and mcgrath win half mile and mile respectively varsity scores 14 i points dr drinker and prof reiter speak on summer camps and hazing erratic work in the field costs brown and white the game rivals outhit since the shakespearean pa geant will take place at 4 p m this coming friday in taylor stadium it has been found necessary to held extra rehearsals and to redouble efforts in order to have everything in readiness in time for the occa sion the shakespeare tercentenary committee of the bethlehems has decided to reserve certain sections of the standfe in taylor stadium for the affair on the afternoon of may 19 each of the participants is to receive two tickets for use by relatives or friends others who desire good seats without having to rush for them can get them re served for the nominal charge of twenty-five cents seats on sale in clude sections g h j x f and e nevertheless there will be plenty of space for which no charge will be made henry viii which is to be given by lehigh will be presented on a large scale the coronation and procession tableaux will be rich with splendid costumes this to gether with the large number on the stage will produce a most de sirable effect there will be fifty five participants in the tableaux the costumes for the affair are be ing obtained from fisher and co philadelphia probably everyone has seen the various schools practicing on the upper part of taylor field all seem to have the necessary spirit and willingness to learn what they are to do mr joseph h benner master of the pageant has proven himself a capable leader in train ing the participants the lehigh squad has been mastering their parts under the leadership of prof charles k mescbter as a whole everything points to a most success ful anniversary of the death of our greatest english dramatist wil liam shakespeare and it is ex pected that an immense crowd will be on hand not only to see the pa geant but to give due honor to this great writer of the seventeenth cen tury students who are to take part in the pageant will be excused from the 3-4 o'clock hour by applying to the heads of the departments in which they have work that hour the first annual banquet of the class of 1919 was held last friday evening at the hotel allen allen town aside from being a success from the attendance standpoint it was also orderly and well con ducted and of great benefit in giving the members of the class an opportunity to become better ac quainted with each other in a social rather than scholarly atmosphere too much credit cannot be given to the committee in charge and to the speakers of the evening for their part in making the banquet a success in the absence of presi dent r a hurley vice-president j d sourber acted as toastmaster who after a few opening remarks presented president drinker who congratulated the class on its spirit and conduct and then spoke in the interests of the student military camps in his address he urged every man who could possibly do so to attend the camps this summer as the benefit obtained by so doing is exceedingly great in these times of uncertainty in conclusion he spoke briefly on the subject of freshman hazing and its some times disastrous results when car ried on as it is at lehigh today he pointed out how many of the larger universities today had abolished most of the dangerous hazing and that lehigh in its present high standing in college circles had outgrown its swad dling clothes and should take steps toward a more sane manner of reminding the fresh fresh man of his minor importance the next speaker of the evening was prof h r reiter whose talk was both humorous and sub stantial h;is remarks concerned the importance of physical as well as mental development in the suc cess of a young man's life every young man should have an adyo cation as well as a vocation ' ' the student should find out just what branch of athletics he is best adapted to and should stick to that spore until he makes good a man who keeps trying but never makes the team is as much a hero as the star of the team and deserves as continued on fifth page civil meet plattsburg recruits one of the most enthusiastic col lege meetings of the year was held in packer hall last friday morn ing at which a : number of impor tant college matters were decided the election of assistant mana gers in basketball and wrestling was the first matter taken up the following men were voted upon wrestling e m allan s b downey and e a mooers basket ball—j p ambler h f shartle and l f knight another ballot is necessary dr drinker was called upon for a few remarks he made a strong plea for the honor system stating the economic value of high stand ards and also of business morality his next request was one regarding the summer camps he explained that if any men of the university wanted to go and could not spare the money he would see that their case would be taken care of by a group of men who have liberally given to aid those in this situation dr drinker tlum dealt briefly on hazing saying that lehigh had passed from the childhood period into one among the large institu tions of tho country prof h r reiter was called up on to speak along these same lines he denounced the present hazing system calling it barbarous and crude stating that in order for le high to keep her stand among the other educational institutions the present system should be abolished in closing he recommended the summer camps very highly m kresge 16 who has been at the military camps for the past three summers spoke on the nu merable advantages he and others had received d t wynne president of the senior class then called on e a clare 16 to read the proposed amendments to our present honor system which were lehigh there will be an important meet ing of the freshman class tomor row afternoon at one o'clock in packer hall all members of the class are urged to be present as nominations for sophomore officers will be held at this time notice a hit by hunt after one man had been retired in the sixteenth inning of saturday's game at eas ton put gerard the lafayette moundsman across the rubber with the winning run throughout the game the longest lafayette-lehigh battle in history the rival pitchers never faltered and were pitching wonderful ball even during the six teenth frame of the gruelling con test at which juncture fortune fa vored the eastonians and chalked up a 5 to 4 defeat for the brown and white nine it was the first of the annual series of three games played be tween lehigh and her down-river rivals a record crowd thronged march field the scene of the con flict erratic work a-field cost lehigh the game practically every misplay leading to a score for the oppo nents the lehigh team register ing twelve hits to eleven for the maroon and white were far more aggressive than the lafayette bat ters until the lafayette outer gardeners had found the range and were playing deep the lehigh bats had poled out some lively extra base clouts joe rawle pitched a most con sistent game but the failure of his team-mates support in critical stages of the game caused him to fight an up-hill battle both pitch ers showed remarkable reserve strength in the extra sessions ac tually tightening up in the final periods with a 4 to 2 score against them lehigh came to bat in their half of the ninth frame and put across the two runs necessary to tie the score from then on through six scoreless rounds the rival teams were retired with surprising regularity each nine grimly taking their turn at bat with the madly-cheering crowd on its feet and calling wildly for a rally the crisis came in the latter half of the sixteenth inning when ge rard landed on one of rawle s of ferings for a short single to left clough drew a pass which put him on first and advanced gerard to the second sack hunt hit a roller be between twombly and chenoweth and on the poor throw r in the la fayette hurler crossed the plate with the winning tally and was car ried off the field on the shoulders of his jubilant classmates lehigh opened the game when twombly flied out to clough fish burn hit one of gerard's shoots for a line drive down the left field foul line and made a circuit of the bases for the first score of the game yap was called out on three pitched balls rawle skied to martin continued on fifth page lafayette more than evened things up in their half of the in ning tallying two runs clough waited for four balls hunt made three attempts to bunt and was out when his third strike rolled 1 foul troxell was safe at first on yap's error clough scored on chief myers single and a moment later troxell crossed the plate on black burn's one-base blow brow t n in the annual middle states in tercollegiate track meet held last saturday at new york lehigh came out in fifth place new york university was first lafayette second rutgers third and swarth more fourth the result was dis appointing as it was hoped that the brown and ayhite men could at least equal their efforts of last year which landed them in third position new york uriversity scored heaviest in the weights and jumps lafayette who took second in the event last year was beat out by new york by just one point p s hanway and p mcgrath placed first in the half mile and mile respectively hanway also garnered two points in the 440 yard dash by capturing third place morrissey added two points to lehigh s score in winning third position in the 220-yard dash hallowell with grossman of haverford brown of swarthmore and pearce
