from his per sonal experience to illustrate his point before beginning his main theme rev clewell spoke enthusiastically of the cordial relations existing be tween the two institutions which were enhanced by many strengthen ing bonds a letter from prof hughes re lating to the night school was read at the y m c a meeting sunday night in it he compliment ed the fine work being accomplish ed by the students pie felt enthu siastic over the large number who have reported for this work prof hughes also stated that in the fu ture there will be two classes 1 a class in which the students do not receive any remuneration 2 a class in which remunera tion will be furnished by the beth steel co to those who will be called on to teach the latter class is to aid those who have difficulty in finding time for the work and to reward the pro fessors called on from time to time founder's day sports the annual founder's day sports postponed from last wednesday will be held on taylor field to morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock all sophomore and freshman _ teams have been practicing consistently for several weeks so that some most exciting events may be anticipated and a 10-yard run from the left ended the third score well-played game there was all the ear-marks of mid-season football in the play of both teams and the result of the contest may well be taken as a fair estimate as to what the teams are able to do yale was completely outplayed in the first half and were kept busy during the second le high had the forward pass working to perfection a fan formation for a forward pass from the line mak ing yards and yards for them the handling of punts was sure through out the game on both sides and the lehigh ends in spite of the fact that the thermometer registered 75 degrees covered the ground excel lently the game in detail first qtiarter after cahall had kicked off for lehigh to legore who ran it back twenty yards where came an un successful forward pass fumbled but recovered and on the next down legore's punt went down the field to hoban covering 45 yards in its flight it was right here that lehigh started to tear things up and with three plays through the line with maginnes and hoban carrying the ball began their march then ca hall punted but desmonld was off side the kick being called back with a 5-yard penalty attached to it ca hall then punted again to the 35 yard line to legore who ran it back ten yards but yale was holding and back went the ball and what was more was given to lehigh on the 50-yard line on yale territory then came the first lehigh for ward pass of the game halsted to desmond taking eight yards but another penalty against yale for in terference added seven yards to that and the ball was lehigh's on yale's 45-yard line an uncompleted for ward pass and a second from cahall to hoban gained seven yards the ball was hurled cleanly and well caught but the punt on the next play went over the goal-line yale marched through for two first downs after the ball was given to them on the 20-yard line le gore punted forty-five yards to ca hall who ran it back fifteen yards to lehigh's 30-yard line halsted dropped back in kick formation and swept around the end with three men interfering for him for a fine run of twenty yards but which net ted slightly more than five yards legore ran back the punt to le high's 42-yard line and on the next play a double pass netted thirteen yards more the next double pass was dropped and it was lehigh's ball the period ending with cahall kicking a beautiful punt to yale's 35-yard line second quarter yale tore off nine yards on the opening play of the new quarter chatfield-taylor being injured and mr c f cooper of xew york y delivered an interesting lecture on the coming men of the orient last friday morning in packer memorial church mr cooper bandied his subject excellently and showed a most interesting collec tion of views from the far east mr cooper is a graduate of brown university and at present is taking a post-graduate course at columbia university he has travelled quite extensively in the far east and has studied particularly the educational systems of egypt china japan and the philippine islands in which he is deeply interested at the outset mr cooper pointed out the difficulty of impressing the people of this country of the mod ernity of the far east he empha sized the following points in par ticular : in the east the average student pays great attention to the practical side of his education he wants an economic education and realizes that education paves the way to a great er wage-earning ability a student would figure that his college educa tion will cost him about seventy-five dollars a year for four years at the end of which time he can perhaps earn forty dollars instead of ten dollars a month in the mohammedan schools in egypt particular stress is laid upon memorizing the koran a book somewhat larger than the new tes tament for twelve years the stu dent studies nothing but the koran and at the end of that time many of them can recite the entire book one of the most remarkable things in egypt is the education of the women only three women in a thousand and eigibty-five men in a thousand are able to write this is due to the long period in which they study the koran alone at the pres ent time more women are entering the schools a mistaken idea among americans is that the women are forced by the men to observe the ancient customs of the east but on the contrary they cling to these cus toms of their own will and are the underlying cause of their retention under the leadership of the great soldier and educator lord kitche ner england has established many governmental schools in egypt in these schools the mohammedans are taught trades and professions much after the manner of the technical and manual training schools in this country one state in india has a system of compulsory education the ma jority of the indian princes are col lege men and their interest will un doubtedly make compulsory educa tion a national issue in the near fu ture the caste system in india of fers a great drawback to the success of the government schools because a member of one caste will not as sociate with members of other cas tes however one of the princes has undertaken the abolition of caste laws by inviting members of the lowest caste or undesirables to his palace it is significant that in one of the japanese universities out of an en rollment of six thousand students over five thousand of them profess ed to have dropped their religion in the philippines the natives are not very far advanced educational continued on second page macleish taking his place then came a bad pass from center and twenty-five yards were lost the ball hitting the ground before it reached the back who was swooped off his feet by three lehigh men the same thing happened in the next play and lehigh had gained fifty yards while the ball was in the pos session of xthe blue what led up to it lehigh was beginning to solve the double passes by concentrating their attention on the outlying backs and letting the man with the ball run until one of the line-men got him the result being a series of split tackle plays the first score started when macleish hurled a for ward pass which was grabbed by cahall who ran it back ten yards lehigh punted there was holding and lehigh was given the ball on the first down in their own terri tory the play that scored then came the play of the day for a perfect forward pass from ca'hall to sawtelle enabled that gentleman to get away and bring the ball down to yale's 25-yard line directly in front of the goal-posts on the next play cahall dropped back to the 31-yard line and booted the ball over and between the bars for the first score of the game and the first one made against yale this season there w r as plenty of cheering and lots of handclapping from the le high contingent and the score-board man shuffled up a 3 into the space opposite visitors yale attempts same thing double and triple passes after the next kick-off were of no avail to yale who had a penalty of twenty five yards given them for holding when legore punted cahall caught the ball on the 35-yard line but failed to signal his fair catch and was blocked off by higginbo tham while talbott cantered down to the lehigh 20-yard line with the ball it was first down of course and legore tried a field-goal but the kick was partly blocked and too low the half was then called with lehigh in the lead third quarter at the opening of the second half double and triple passes got going fine for yale on the first play af ter the kick-off which hoban caught on the 25-yard line cahall made a wonderful and spectacular run a round left end to the middle of the field and with only the yale left halfback remaining between him and the goal put on third speed but was trapped by the only man left a trinle na.ss allowed ainslev to make continued on third page forward pass plays part yale was more than scared on saturday afternoon when lehigh completely outplayed them in the first half obtaining a three-point lead in the second quarter on a field goal by cahall but finally succumb ing to the eli attack and being de feated to the tune of 20 to 3 the brown and white team was out weighed by about a twenty-pound average and the insistent attack of the blue defenders meant that they would fall sooner or later but the lehigh fighters stood by their col ors and postponed this until late in the third quarter it was an extremely hot after noon ordered more for baseball than for football and the quarters were cut down to ten minutes each but at that it worked hob with the players and made it a case of coats off for a crowd of 6,000 in the stands included in this number were more than twenty lehigh sup porters and these few men made enough noise in cheering and sing ing to fool the new 7 haven resi dents into believing that there were a thousand the jleiiigh score in the second period of play ca hall booted a beautiful field-goal from the 31-yard line for the first score made against yale this season the ball had been advanced to this position by some clever forward passing which was worked to per fection during the entire game by lehigh it was a wonderful sight to see that oval sailing between the goal-posts while every man wear ing a blue jersey was trying to pull it down the lehigh men in the stands went wild as did also those men in college who read the brown and white bulletins of the game there remains little to be said con cerning the yale feelings they were completely at a loss as to what to do and allowed lehigh to con tinue to keep the ball in their terri tory for the remainder of the first half the work of the eli team was most ragged in the first two quar ters and it was only in the second half that they offered any obstinate rejection of lehigh's desire to gain ground second half is yale's it was in the second half that yale made her scores the first touchdown was made by ainsworth who was jammed over the line af ter a swiftly-moving attack had car ried the ball from the center of the field in ten plays and only after lehigh held them with bull-dog de termination on the 1-yard line for third down the second score came after a somewhat similar stand made by the determined supporters
