perhaps you won't wonder that such a movement as the safety first movement has grown so rap idly when you consider the figures relative to industrial accidents prior to 1908 these figures showed an average of 25,000 deaths resulting from two million more or less seri ous industrial accidents annually in the united states in other words you might say that every twenty minutes of the day throughout the entire year a workman was killed and eveiw twelve seconds of the day a workman taken to the hospital with serious injuries this wholesale slaughter of hu manity was going on year after year practically unnoticed because these tragedies were scattered and did not involve any one great catas trophe at the time of the titan ic disaster fifteen hundred souls went to eternity and the whole world was shocked ; yet a far greater catastro phe avas occurring year in and year out but because it was distributed over a period of 365 days no one noticed it to-day however the situation has am entirely different countenance and you find the large majority of the manufacturers in this country striving to conserve mankind the country's greatest re source in the brief period since 1908 statistics show that a reduc tion of fifty per cent has been ef fected as based upon the figures prior to that date when safety first was umthought of to any very large extent so much for the reason for the work which is being done fundamentally the general de velopment of any safety first cam paign is based upon two things i c mechanical safeguarding of danger ous machinery and the education of can only be eliminated by properly edu cating the workmen 1 . although these are the facts you can never theless understand that you must safeguard your machines etc about the plant and thereby show a dol lars and cents interest in the gen eral propaganda if you expect your men to believe you are sincere in the work you are trying to do af ter you have started systematic safeguarding of dangerous places you have then laid the foundation for other methods of accident pre vention most important of which is the educational campaign it is my purpose to show you graphically by the use of slides and
