gave the first of a series of three illus trated lectures on sewage disposal before the members of the civil engineering course in this lecture mr fox first re counted the general methods of sewage disposal which have been in use up to the present time fie then gave a detailed description of the broad irrigation method of sew age disposal as in vogue in both europe and america numerous slides including views of the ber lin and paris plants were shown mining and geologi cal society meeting on thursday evening march the 25th at 8 o'clock the mining and geological society will be enter tained by dr and mrs drinker at their home on the campus a large number of men are ex pected to turn out for this annual reception tendered to the society dr f f hintze of the depart ment of geology will be subject the intercollegiate wrestling meet will be held in taylor gym nasium in two meets the first on friday evening march 26th at 8 o'clock will decide the prelimina ries and semi-finals the second on saturday afternoon march 27th at 2 o'clock will decide the finals and second and third places students may obtain one reserv ed or general admission ticket per registration card at a 25-cent reduc tion at the gymnasium ticket office any time to-morrow and until tues day of next week on this date tickets will be placed on general sale in the bethlehems and allentown season tickets do not entitle holder to admission or to any reduction on tickets general sale prices : re served seats 75 cents general ad mission 50 cents ; students allow ed 25-cent reduction y m c a announcement professor w s franklin of the department of physics has recent ly invented a new kind of swim ming pool which can be scrubbed rinsed and filled with drinkable wa ter every two hours the pool being full of water and in constant use the cost of maintenance of the pool is actually less than the cost which is involved in the method of opera tion which is now usually employed the plan involves three distinct ive elements as follows : — the installation of a large sand filter alongside of the pool with a capacity sufficient to turn over the water in the pool from twelve to twenty-four times per day depend inig on the number of persons using the pool this will allow the water to be filtered at an enormously in creased rate the use of a lightly framed bulk head which is pushed slowly from one end of the pool to the other by the inflowing pure water prevents the mixing of the inflowing pure water with the used water in the pool the use of the moving bulkhead for automatically scrubbing the bot tom and side walls of the pool as it travels back and forth along the pool the only method now in use is to empty the pool and scrub it by hand professor franklin's plan provides for a slight lowering of the water level in front of the moving bulkhead so that the inflowing wa ter and the scraping and rubbing action of the closely-fitted bulkhead provides for a thorough scrubbing satisfactory operation of the moving bulkhead requires the bot tom and side walls of the pool to be made accurately plane professor franklin's moving bulk head arrangement can be used in a pool having a sloping bottom as well as in a pool of uniform depth therefore so far as the proposed plan of operation is concerned it makes very little difference whether the pool is made of uniform depth or with a sloping bottom college note the university of california has a correspondence course in scienti fic agriculture which is being taken by mail by over 6,000 ambitious farmers this university has more students enrolled in the correspond ence courses than in regular uni versity work the general theme of the march meeting of the civil engineering society which was held last mon day evening in drown hall was rapid transit three members of the junior class gave interesting and well-prepared talks on various phases of the above subject l allen 16 spoke first on the effect of the extension of urban and suburban lines on real estate values the early development of this country began with the invention of the steam-boat in 1807 and the locomotive some time later and took place along these high ways of communication namely the rail road and the stream but not all the people can live in cities that lie along the navigable streams and railroads and the development of the districts next to these high ways of communication was brought a bout by the extension and building of trolley systems the influence that the extension of the urban and suburban lines has on real estate values may be divided into : 1 the effect of their extension on real estate values in the business district 3 the effect of the construction of suburban lines on country land values 2 the effect of their extension on the value of unimproved land in the suburbs of the city the effect of their extension on real estate values in the business district is most strikingly shown by the construction of the market st subway in philadelphia which caus ed an increase in assessed valuation of 38,226,000 or 128 in the pe riod from 1900 to 1912 during the same period the increase in as sessed values in the neighboring streets chestnut and arch was 26 and 39 respectively the second effect stated is shown by the fact that in the 46th and 47th wards on the outskirts of philadel phia the increase in assessed valua tion of unimproved land due to the construction of rapid transit lines was 3,686,000 or over 500 in the period 1900 to 1912 the social conditions on the farm have been immensely improved as a result of the suburban trolley sys tems the extension of the electric railway into rural districts has con tributed in a greater degree to the advancement of farming in commu nities remote from the markets than any other development of modern times the electric railroad has brought the market to the farmer's door making it possible to load his produce on cars at the lowest possi ble expense for handling and haulage the diminution of the accident rate per year in the last decade was the subject of the paper by a c eberhard 16 much has been done by rapid transit companies in the last ten years to decrease the accident rate the work that they have done to ward this end has been mostly on their own initiative continued on fourth page one of the first and most im portant moves on the part of rapid transit companies was to educate their employees along the lines of safety first also the general public as well are being urged to the march meeting of the arts and science club was held at the home of his minute description of his trip of which he had no definite plan on setting out the compact ness of the towns built so because of the old walls was everywhere noticeable these old walls built during the 12th and 13th centuries are at some places intact rising to the height of 100 feet with a path of four or more feet on the top passing through the relics of me diaevalism in a 20th century auto mobile is as strange as it is suggest ive of material progress • in travelling along the express routes in france one must leave the main course some 2 or 3 miles from the town and enter the town by a local this makes riding in express trains not advantageous for a per son who desires to get to a place in a hurry with paris as his headquarters prof fox made daily excursions to the points of interest outside the town fie vividly described an old fortress which is now no longer able to withstand siege because of its poor fortifications which would soon crumble under the fire of mod ern guns when austria declared war on servia he got all the gold together he could and began to make for the nearest port he boarded an english vessel ivhich lay in naples for three days taking on a cargo of macaronni and for coaling leaving naples the ship took a zig-zag course presumably along the coast of africa finally coming to gibraltar from whence it was es corted by submarines this ship which was making for boston had no lights aglow for fear of attack by german cruisers known to be looking for prey among the allied vessels prof fox described the tension existing among the peoples about to be plunged into war his diffi culties in getting back to america he asserted were not of the most pleasant sort but the best that could be desired dr cooley who was in tunis when the war broke out told how he made his way to algiers from thence he gained transportation on one of the seven french troop steamers ; escorted by twenty tor pedo boats and eight battleships to the continent the goeben
