anderson pitches good ball al brecht stars in field and at the bat end of first period ends a tie lehigh shoots accurately in second half and wins the electrical engineering socie ty held its regular monthly meeting in the physics building last friday evening at 8 o'clock in spite of the freshman banquet which took place the sarnie night a large num ber of the menrbers were on hand and all spent an enjoyable evening as the principal speaker for the meeting c a underbill of the acme wire company of new ha ven connecticut gave a demons tration of some of the products of his company and of some of the discoveries which he made in his study of electromagnets both direct current and alternating current he presented a valuable show-case con taining a variety of magnets and solenoids which are manufactured by the wire company to the elec trical department and in addition several pieces of apparatus upon which he experimented during the meeting lantern slides accompan ied his talk h l vitzthum 15 presented a paper on electric motors as ap plied to industries at the begin ning of the meeting the paper contained an outline of what the electric motor has done in different lines of industry continued on third page farming although usually in the hands of conservative men has late ly been developed into one of the most promising forms of invest ment and this is largely due to the application of scientific methods in which the electric motor has a prominent part thrashing wheat and handling raw material together with its use in the home all have gradually come into their own in the east the motor is used in driv ing separators capping and hand ling milk bottles driving churns mining department lehigh the miming department has re cently purchased a reflectograph an instrument which by means of an arrangement of mirrors and len ses can reflect pictures or photo graphs without making them into slides the recitation room in coxe laboratory has been equipped with curtains and a screen the machine will be used to supplement lectures and class work miners meet to-morrow the lehigh lacrosse team had little trouble in rolling up the score of 10 to 2 against the team from perm state the first half of the game was played rather evenly al though somewhat loosely the brown and white team scoring but twice after eleven attempts at the goal while perm state scored the same number from but three at tempts this ended the scoring for perm state however the lehigh team tightening up considerably im the second half after six min utes of play kirby scored a goal on a direct pass from hiss after this the playing was held close to the perm state goal and seven more points were scored h h mayers making four of them during this half penw state had but one at tempt at the lehigh goal while le high had fifteen tries at the perm state net ho'ban and sextoni were absent from the lehigh line-up the for mer having an injured knee and the latter being on the sick list jay of lehigh i-layed his usual stellar game captain buck an d mayers also being in the limelight captain farley showed up well for perm state lehigh's defense was not taxed very hard nevertheless green 1 , desmond and jenness work ed well together and seemed to be an excellent combination for break ing up plays the line-up and summary : perm state pos lehigh kriebel goal leonard bose point hiss wood coy point . . . scruggs fisher .... ist defense .... green koon .... 2nd defense . . desmond jordan .... 3rd defense . .. jenniess hewitt center .... zollinger halowell . 3rd attack . w c alayer farley c . 2nd attack . . buck c baer ist attack jay olmstead . out-home . h.h.mayers mathews .. . in-home kirby goals first half — perm state farley mathews lehigh kirby buck second half — lehigh : kir by w c mayer jay 2 h h mayers 4 substitutions — perm state : pope for hewitt verger for koon ; passes also were numerous ander son delivering three while smith granted seven in the first imning twombley and chenoweth were given bases on balls fishburn was safe on rid dell's error filling the bases keady struck out twombley crossed for the first run when lees was passed chenoweth and fishburn scored when albrecht doubled this end ed the scoring for maginmes and achont both struck out crescent scored twice in this inning on two passes and error and an infield out lehigh scored three more runs in the sixth on a walk stolen base hits by achorni and anderson a sacri fice and an error in the out-field crescent tallied one run in 1 the sixth and two more in the seventh on hits by i owe and sides ohenoweth's error and an infiekl out lehigh scored three times in the ninth on two hits a wild pitch by smith and two errors the score lehigh : 300003003—9 crescent a c 2 0 0 00 12 00—5 bases on balls — off anderson 3 off smith 5 struck out — by an derson 7 by smith 6 wild pitch — smith passed ball — lees sac rifice hit — maginness sacrifice fly — connell stolen bases — al brecbt keady home mallory rid dell two-base hits — albrecht sides and riddell umpire — wil son crescent a c time — 1 hour 56 minutes notice two interesting papers on the subject of sewerage were pre sented at the april meeting of the c e society held last thursday night in the physics building the two speakers were air r l fox of the civil engineering depart ment and air c d weirbach city engineer of allentown both of whom supplemented their talks with slides air fox read a paper on the batavia sewerage system : the city of batavia has a population of 12,000 covers an area of four square miles and is situated half way between buffalo and roches ter n y due to the geological formation of the valley ways they were originally swampy two nat ural drainage ditches were run into the tonawanda creek which flows through the city and as these ditch es were only partially covered they naturally created nuisances which resulted in several law suits three plans for a new system of sewage disposal were submitted one called for a gravity system with an outlet to the east of the city for the proper treatment of the sewage the use o>f a sand filter was recommended this plan was however rejected a second plan was to form six separate drainage districts and to pump from each one of these to one central outlet the sewage was to be treated by means of septic tanks and contact beds in the third and accepted plap it was proposed to establish a central pumping stations located in the center of the city from which the sewage was to be pumped to the north of the city where it was treated by the use of tmhoff tanks and sprinkling filters from whence it was to flow through an effluent sewer a distance of about a mile to the tonawairda creek to cover the cost of this plan 375,000 was appropriated these three plans are interesting in that each is an en tirely different method the adopted plan is designed for a population of 15,000 inhabitants to contribute 83 gallons per capita per day the total flow was ex pected to be 1,245,000 gallons of house sewage and 1,600,000 gal lons of ground water as a maxi mum the sewage enters the plant through a 16-inch cast iron force main then through a rectangular trough over six submerged weirs and flows longitudinally across four imhoff tanks at a mean velocity of 0.7 of a foot per minute here a great majority of the solid matter settles out and works its way into the digestive chambers where ana erobic bacterial action occurs the gases which are odorless pass up through the gas slots the sludge is later removed to drying beds the sewage remaining untreat ed then passes through a dosing tank from whence it is discharged onto the filter-beds nozzles which give umbrella-shaped sprays are used here aerobic action of bac teria takes place the sludge dry ing-bed is 2 feet deep and 150 feet by 30 feet in plan after drying this sludge can be spaded like gar den soil and is used for filling this plant has been in operation a little over three years and has always produced a sludge that earn be read ily handled without appreciable odor the sewerage and sewage dis posal problem of the city of allen town pa was the subject discuss ed by mr weirbach : plans were first prepared for the sewerage of continued on third page get seven firsts and six second places burke high scorer promising material many new men take part in the events freshmen make good showing last saturday afternoon the 1916 track men easily captured the an nual inter-class track meet with a total score of 57 points ;
