mins 14 2-5 sees grum bach puts shot 41 ft zy 2 ins last evening the civil engineer ing society held its final meeting of the year in the fritz laboratory building a series of tests were performed before an audience of ■over ninety after which the election of officers and the serving of re freshments took place among the guests present at the meeting we're civil engineers in the employ of the bethlehem steel co lehigh valley railroad lehigh & xew england railroad lehigh valley transit co and the various portland cement companies in the vicinity the tests performed during the evening were as follows : electrolysis of steel in concrete two series of two specimens each connected on a line of 110 volts were used in this test ; in one series the rods were the anodes and in the other series the cathodes the test was run for twenty four hours be ing timed so that the anode speci mens would crack during the event ing the specimens were of 1 2:4 concrete with steel rods im bedded rein-forced concrete beam test : a 1:2:4 reinforced concrete beam was tested to destruction the maxi mum load being 13,800 pounds at a load of 9500 pounds the fibre stress in the concrete was approximately 1.200 pounds per square inch and the fibre stress in the steel approxi mately 18,800 pounds per square inch . autographic tension test a one-inch wrought iron bar was used in this test the machine plotting au tomatically the stress-strain curve concrete column test : a five foot 1:2:4 concrete column with no reinforcement twenty-eight days old was subjected to a maximum load of 340,000 pounds giving a stress of approximately 2200 pounds per square inch illuminated sprinkling filter nozzle exhibit three types of nozzles such as used on filter beds in sewage disposal plants were shown the sprays being illuminated with different colored lights illuminated weir and pelton wheel exhibit a three-foot pelton y heel run under a low head with stream illuminated with colored lights was shown the water dis charged from the wheel ran over a suppressed weir which was also il luminated with colored lights the election of officers for the year of 1915-1916 resulted as fol lows : — president e j clement 16 secretary r w sheckells 16 treasurer l b ryon jr 17 in a game played in a drizzling , rain lehigh defeated dickinson by , the score of 8 to 2 for a time it looked as though lehigh would have a hard fight to win the game dickinson having a two-run lead until the fifth inning in the last four innings by hitting at opportune times and aided by several costly errors lehigh scor ed eight runs keady made his first appearance in the box this season and hurled an exceptionally strong game al lowing only three hits and striking out seven men during the seven in nings he pitched two of the three hits were of the scratch variety ragged fielding by the infield in the second inning which netted dickinson two runs prevented kea dy from securing a shut-out in the eighth inning anderson relieved keady and retired the side on three pitched balls in the ninth inning holmes with two out tripled but the next man up was an easy out mower pitch c 1 a better game than the score would indicate sev eral of lehigh's runs being directly due to errors holmes was the big man with the stick for dickinson securing three of their four hits potter put up a good game at first and goldstein's receiving was one of the best exhibitions seen this season twombley lees and sanford each secured two hits twombley's triple cleared the bases in the fifth one of sanford's hits was a homer over the fence fishburn in the fifth made one of his customary hair-raising stops throwing the batter out at first lehigh's first scoring was done in the fifth inning when albrecht walked sanford singled connell struck out and achorn walked fill ing the bases twombley tripled clearing the bases in the seventh inning with one down achorn beat out an infield hit twombley was safe at first on an error by the short-stop wynne struck out scribner muffed fishburn's easy fly achorn scoring maginnes bat ting for keady singled scoring twombley and fishburn maginnes taking second on the throw home lees singled scoring maginnes one more run was tallied in the eighth when sanford hit over tlie right-field fence for a home-run continued on fourth page 1917 class meeting the first game of the 1915 lafay ette-lehigh series will be played to morrow afternoon on taylor field this year the first and last games will be played in south bethlehem while the second one on may 22nd will be played on march field eas ton the series between these ath letic rivals is one of long standing to-morrow contest will be the eightieth time that their teams have met during the last thirty years only once in 1897 did they fail to cross bats in an annual series the outcome of this year's series de pends upon to-morrow's results a victory for the brown and white in that game means the winning of the series for the last game played here before the commencement week crowd will in all probability be a lehigh victory lafayette has a strong team in fielding and hitting departments this year has been a successful one during their southern trip only two out of nine games were lost in all the games they have been hitting the ball quite frequently the lafayette aggregation with but one exception 1 is the same as the one which went down to defeat in last year's series hunt replaces sheer en the giant center-fielder coach crowelfs twirlers five in number have not been pitching the highest grade of
