the all en town lehigh club was held on tuesday evening in the club's quarters in the guth building on hamilton street there was an unusually large crowd present and the real subject of discussion was the game with muhlenberg — due chiefly to the prejudice and par tiality shown by the allentown pa pers and football enthusiasts a committee was appointed to arrange for the dance to be given by the club in conjunction with the perm state club on tuesday de cember 23rd in mealy's auditori um it was decided to invite all lehigh men to the smoker which will be held in the rooms the even ing before the swarthmore game senior class-book committee at a meeting of the senior class held in packer hall at noon on wednesday the following men were elected to constitute the se nior class ook committee : burns galloway van sickle mickel and graham death of dr kimball to-morrow the brown and white team will meet at annapolis one of the strongest and heaviest teams of the fast the navy team is known for their heavy line and so far this year other teams have been unable to score on them their line is greatly strengthened by the pres ence of brown at guard and gil christ at end both of these men are veterans and have in former years played good games for the middies lehigh will be represented by a bout the same team as last satur day against muhlenberg — captain flick has been practicing with the team and it is hoped that he will be able to play also so far this season the middies have scored 28 points on the uni versity of pittsburgh 23 on george town 29 on dickinson and 76 on maryland agricultural college this game promises to be a hard one for navy not only wishes to keep up her good record but also wants to retrieve the defeat of last year the remaining games of the sea son are as follows : nov 1 — navy nov 8 — swarthmore nov 15 — haverf ord nov 22 — lafayette * indicates plome game 645 students in college word has been received at the university office of the death at cody wyoming on thursday oc tober 23rd of dr james p kim ball a former member of the le high faculty dr kimball was professor of geology here from 1873 to 1880 and professor of ec onomic geology from 1880 to 1886 he is survived by two sons who are lehigh alumni russell kimball 99 and farley kimball 01 both of cody resident coach keady had the squad out for extra hard work on wednesday afternoon in prepara tion for saturday's game after being put through a hard drill with the tackling dummy the line held practice in running down punts in the scrimmage that followed the varsity showed up strongly in holding the scrubs for downs crichton was hurt in scrimmage but his injuries are not thought to be serious it is probable that the game with the navy will consist of straight hard-played football as coach kea dy intends to save the best forma tions and plays for the swarth more game the navy has practi cally the same team as last season with the exception of the pitts burgh game the navy's schedule to date has consisted of games with smaller colleges so no exact idea can be obtained as to the strength of the latter s team for pitts burgh the navy game was the sec ond of the season and resulted in a tie score the line-up for saturday's game will be about the same as that for the muhlenberg game flick will probably be played at end in place of fred green who was badly bruised in last week's contest ho ban and sawtelle are back in the game although the latter has not completely recovered from injuries sustained in the yale game the probable line-up : — flick 1 c grumbach 1 t frank the p>aldwin locomotive works in philadelphia this concern is the largest locomotive works in the world and its products are shipped to every quarter of the globe mr johnson is a man who has worked his way from the bottom to the top of this concern and will therefore be able to tell us many in teresting facts carlson 17 will give a fifteen minute piano recital the meeting will be held as usual at 6.30 p m notice the initial number of the lehigh alumni bulletin has made its ap pearance and has been well receiv ed it is a newsy twelve-page pamphlet filled with notes of inter est to every alumnus not only does it have something to say about practically every class which has graduated from lehigh but also it informs those who have gone of everything worthy of note which has happened at the university it is full of statistics ; the alumni are told how our football team and va rious college activities athletic and otherwise are getting along ; it tells exactly how many men are attend ing college how many are in the different courses and compares the number of the present year with those of the past few continued on third page for the present year this pamph let will be sent out quarterly the second issue of this first volume to appear in january it is regarded as certain that next year and there after it will be published as a monthly periodical everything must make a humble start the bulletin may have made a humble start in regard to number of issues per year but in regard to quality and news value it has surely begun its existence with a cry which will be heard and answered readily even at this early date many com munications have been received by mr r r walters the registrar and editor of the bulletin these letters have been written by alumni who have received the bulletin and realize and appreciate what a tre mendous influence it will have in making all alumni more loyal to their alma mater if such a thing corrected figures of the first term attendance at lehigh give the total enrollment as 645 students in stead of 621 as stated in the last issue the numbers in detail are as follows : graduate students in residence 27 seniors 109 juniors 115 sophomores 162 freshmen 216 specials 16 the total of 645 does not include non-resident grad uate students or students who at tended summer school only seats on sale for lafayettelehigh football game it has been officially announced that there will be held three smok ers during this football season : the first will be held the night before the swarthmorc game on novem ber bth and the other two before the haverf ord and lafayette games more than likely these smokers will be held in drown memorial hall to make these smokers a success it will be necessary for every one in college who is able to sing talk or act to hand their names in to one of the cheer leaders and be on hand that night to do their little stunt it is hoped that quite a num ber will respond to this request and make these gatherings the best that have ever been held a chinese newspaper addressed to mr tsu chee ming lehigh university pennsylvania u s a is held at the registrar's office notice there will be a rehearsal of the cast of the minstrel show on sat urday afternoon at 3 o'clock in drown mall rehearsal for the chorus will be held the following monday at 4.30 and for the end men at 4.30 on tuesday all students wishing reserved seats for the laf ayette-lehigh foot ball game can get application blanks at the university supply bureau drown hall to-day and to-morrow these blanks must be filled out with number of seals wanted and the re mittance must be enclosed there will be no other student reserved seat sale except for cheering sec tion these applications must be in by november 3rd at the latest last chance o'clock the feature of the evening was an interesting address on ex isting relations between the united states and mexico by professor j l stewart of the department of political economy the meeting was called to order at 8 o'clock by president mickel and the minutes of the last meeting were read president mickel then made a short address to the new men present stating the object and history of the club he said that the club was organized three years ago and began with much enthusi asm but that the enthusiasm had gradually died out and last year there was very little interest taken in the club the club is not local ; there are other similar clubs in all of the large universities headquar ters being at columbia university in new york city in many of these clubs work in accordance with the purpose of the club is done in the towns or cities in which the clubs are situated but here the ob ject of the club is to allow the mem bers to come together to discuss po litical questions and to hear speak ers on questions of a political na ture the statement is often made that the college graduate is in the majority of cases ignorant of po litical affairs and also often indiff erent it is the college graduate who is expected to take an active and prominent position in the world's affairs and he should be ac quainted with the conditions which he will meet after his statement of the purposes of the club mr mickel presented professor stew art professor stewart before taking up the subject of his talk spoke of the importance of politics he said that politics needed more up right men to better existing condi tions the public schools the pub lic health and other things of vital interest to every man are involved in politics and it is only when the voice of the people is expressed that everything goes along as it should the speaker gave several examples of political fights in which it was doubtful whether any principle was involved and in which political greed was the most prominent char acteristic when professor stewart took up the subject of the mexican situa tion he gave the history of another mexican revolution similar to the present one this revolution took place between the years 1867 and 1876 and resulted in the adoption of a constitution similar in many respects to that of the united states a congress and president were elected diaz being elected presi dent with the exception of a few years diaz remained in his position until he was exiled during the pres ent revolution diaz maintained peace throughout the country by strict discipline but the people had little or no choice in the govern mental affairs and the government kept itself in power by armed force the man who dared to run against diaz was imprisoned there were no newspapers or other means of voicing the public sentiment but the people were gradually becoming restless under this subordination during the time of this superfi cial peace foreign capital was pour ing into mexico to develop the rich resources of the country the uni ted stales furnished almost half of this great britain was second and germany and france next in the amount of capital supplied for in dustrial enterprises the mexicans had very little part in the develop ment of the great natural wealth of heir country but they gradually awoke to the fact that almost all of their country's wealth was
