vol xxi detroit alumni get busy examination roster posted no 27 junior orators are needed roster of final examination for first term posted in buildings on mondny brown and white quintette in snappy game outplays strong team from new york members of 1915 class are asked to get busy and enter ora torical contest february 22d the date every player a star to cover seven days examinations will be held every day from january 23rd to the 30th individual work on part of both teams is a feature johnson shines at center contest will take place in con nection with the washington birthday exercises schedule for next year as an nounced includes but two games away from home the following is the complete football schedule for the season of 1914 sept 26 f & m ost 3 carlisle oct 10 yale oct 17 — carnegie tech oct 24 muhlenberg oct 31 — johns hopkins nov 7—perm.7 — perm state nov 14 — villanova.*^^b nov 21 — lafayette * * designates home games purdue's tank scrap abolished in the annual sophomore-fresh man class fight at purdue this year a sophomore francis obenchain was killed it was decided by doc tors in lafayette that he died of heart failure before the fight start ed but an inquest held in his home town showed that his neck had been broken in two places sentiment at purdue has been growing more and more adverse to the fight every year on the day following the fight at a meeting of the student body it was unanimously decided to abolish the tank scrap for ever great sorrow is felt by the entire university because of the death of this young man lehigh men in detroit give in formal luncheon to dr rich ards and plan for club dr richards was the guest of honor at an informal supper held at the griswold house detroit michigan on friday january 9th preceeding his address before the detroit engineering society the following lehigh men were in attendance banks 93 chap man 00 connor 05 hardcastle 06 kennedy 07 bump 07 walker 08 gibble 08 morss 09 hess 10 hiney 10 lamb 13 campbell 13 rouse 13 c l weil an instructor in the chemical course at lehigh 93 o w albee and f h mason of the detroit engineering society and j f barr manager of the gear grinding machine company were also guests to the best of our knowledge this is the first time a group of le high men has gotten together in this city and needless to say they had a very fine time and are looking for more meetings in the future after the supper mr banks ap pointed chapman and kennedy as a committee to arrange for the for mation of a permanent alumni club in detroit as there are about twen ty lehigh men in this city and im mediate vicinity and more coming due to the automobile industry new epitome editor notice glee club all juniors in full standing and pursuing regular courses of study are hereby urged to enter into com petition for the junior oratorical contest on february 22nd in con nection with the washington's birthday exercises since the oc casion is this year especially to be a most memorable one it is hoped that the response from the junior class be liberal so far this has not been the case in view of the short time which still remains be fore that date it is urged that those desiring to enter as contestants at once inform professor luch sau con hall either personally or in writing of their intention and get to work immediately on a subject for information with respect to other details concerning subject materi als submission of the finished essay and trial speaking consult professor luch also as soon as possible it is however above all essential that those desiring to enter the contest get to work on a subject at once the subjects below are offered for choice it is however not implied that the subject for the oration must be taken from the list offered subjects suggested 1 the monroe doctrine 2 vocational training 3 education for life 4 contribution of greece to civi lization 5 the puritans in american lit erature 6 physical culture in education 7 militarism in the u s 8 scandal of the pork barrel or causes of waste and ineffici ency in national government 9 the city manager plan 10 commission government for states 11 presidential primaries or pres ident choosing : — old ways and new 12 the new nationalism or fed eralism and centralization 13 virginia in american litera ture 14 washington's education and ours 15 the panama canal 16 the moral equivalent for war 17 the new currency act 18 the proposed union between chile the u s and argentine republic 19 the increased production of gold as a factor in the high cost of living 20 world peace 21 washington's political ideals and ours there will be only two more prac tices of the glee club before the finals the first will be saturday january 17th at 1.30 p m and the last of the term in the field house wednesday jan 21 noon brown and white board meet ing in drown memorial hall 2.00 p m wrestling practice in the field house 8.00 p m — basketball game lehigh vs muhlenberg in the col osseum lehigh added another game to its list of victories last wednesday night when the fast fordham team was defeated on the colosseum floor by a 51 to 21 score the new york five which recently beat yale in a close game made it hard work for lehigh during the first half es pecially during the first ten minutes when the two teams were not sepa rated by more than a few points the brown and white quintet came back in the second half and found the change of baskets to their lik ing acquiring such a commanding total as to give a chance for the substitutes while the fordham team was used to a surface as slip pery as the colosseum floor they were handicapped in the way of size lehigh getting the jump on them at center and passing over their heads so to speak because of this inability of theirs to play the ball they took to playing the man and the game became an in dividual one team-play being lack ing throughout many long shots and one-handed ones being the conse quence crichton's and johnson's handling of the ball with one hand was spectacular white shot bas kets from everywhere and price specialized from one spot the foul line whenever fordham got the ball and started down the floor seemingly for a basket green play ing defensive entirely was always there to break up the pass in front of the basket the first hali lehigh started the scoring with a floor-goal but fordham soon made a point on a foul and from there on for ten minutes the scor ing was close lehigh always being in the lead but not for more than a few points the score was 10 to 7 before lehigh got going when baskets by white crichton and johnson in quick succession gave continued on second page dr drinker again heads foresters with the election of officers and the adoption of a platform announ cing policies to be advocated on the regulation of national state and private forests the thirty-third an nual meeting of the american for estry association was brought to a close wednesday dr henry sturgis drinker was re-el ected president joshua l bailey of philadelphia dr j t rothrock of west chester pa and gifford pinchot were among live vice-presidents elected san francisco was chosen for the 1915 convention monday marked the appearance of the roster of the final examina tions for this term which have been posted in various buildings the first examinations begin at 8.00 a m on friday
