student-body brown and white players add another victory score 3 to o last game of season captain hartdegen and buck score goals for lehigh in final game on friday morning he speaks on some economic as pects of war the intercollegiate track meet held by the middle atlantic states athletic association at franklin & marshall college lancaster last saturday was again won by laf ayette whose athletes totaled 23 points lehigh was only able to accumu late 6^2 points of which mickel and hanway both contributed one point the former securing fourth place in the mile run while the latter took fourth place in the half-mile run good contributed one point by win ning fourth place in the high hur dles while bailey and randall to gether added zy points the former taking fourth place in the shot-put while the latter tied for second place in the pole vault the points scored by the differ ent colleges were : lafayette 23 lebanon valley 21 rutgers 18 haverford 17j-4 washington and jefferson 17 society meet lehigh ties hav erford in tennis lehigh's lacrosse team closed its scheduled season last saturday af ternoon defeating stevens institute of technology in hoboken scoring three goals to the home team's none buck caged the ball in the first minute of play but the game soon slackened in speed and was not very exciting at one stage of the con test three lehigh and two stevens men were defeated weller haverford 9-7 6-4 in the doubles : turnbull and powers lehigh defeated carey and murray haver ford 6-3 6-2 allen and weller haverford de feated griffen and beard lehigh 6-4 10 12 6-1 important juniors the electrical engineering so ciety held its final meeting of the year last friday evening in the physics laboratory j s will iamson 14 read an interesting pa per on storage battery vehicles and after an open discussion of this paper professor franklin ad dressed the society on the me chanical analogues of electricity and magnetism the election of officers which was held during the meeting resulted as follows president n f mathe son 15 vice-president e r frey 15 secretary f c brock man 15 treasurer o w esh bach 15 faculty adviser prof franklin prof franklin illustrating his talk with lantern slides and some simple apparatus gave an interest ing as well as practical discussion of his subject following this lec ture the society adjourned to the seminary room where the speaker explained the merits of his rarebit turner an apparatus of his own construction devised for the pur pose of mixing welsh rarebits it is a practical machine and its fea tures were exhibited to the society with their hearty approval arts and science club alumni club meeting the lehigh university club of greater new york held a well attended and enthusiastic meeting in the machinery club 50 church street new york city last friday evening vice president emery gave a talk the following officers were elect ed : president 11 l scovil 98 vice-president g r robinson oo second vice-president g r ens coe third vice-president g f murnane to secretary and treas urer n merriman 05 commencement issue wanted the arts and science club will hold its last regular meeting 011 thursday evening ( fficers for next year will be elected the war question will be dis cussed by several members of the club the meeting is called for 8 o'clock professor h c emery ch'air man of the united states tariff board talked at the banquet of tau beta pi and phi beta kappa on thursday and addressed the stu dents on friday the joint banquet of the phi beta kappa and tau beta pi honorary societies was held in the commons on thursday evening may 14th prof h c emery of yale uni versity was the guest of honor the banquet was preceded by an address given by prof emery in the chapel the subject of his talk was scholarship and success and under this title was given a clear explanation of the proper combination of scholastic ability with other qualities which would be conducive toward a successful ca reer following the lecture in the chap el a banquet was served at the com mons at which there were a large number of the members from both societies prof robert w blake acted as toastmaster and after a few opening remarks he introduced the first speaker of the evening dr drinker spoke on lehigh and the honorary societies prof emery was then called upon for a few re marks and chose as his subject phi beta kappa the next speaker was the representative speaker for tau beta pi namely mr caleb s kenney who gave a very interest ing talk on tau beta pi in pana ma the final speech of the even ing was given by dr a g rau of the moravian college in bethlehem on the subject scholarship and phi beta kappa college lecture professor emery delivered an in teresting lecture in packer memori al chapel last friday morning on some economic aspects of war he may be quoted as follows : can anything be put on the credit side to show that war is not always and in every way a detriment to economic welfare certainly much may be said on the credit side and 1 know of no phase of the problem of war and armaments which has been so neglected tn the first place it is only through war that modern states have been formed with a strong national government and the possibility of a genuine national economic policy which took the place of the local and territorial economies of an earlier period professor emery concluded by stating that the military efficiency of the people goes hand in hand with their economic efficiency and that war is not a test of brute strength but a test of success in the manifold arts of peace anderson allows but four hits while ten are secured off girard and brown on saturday lafayette succeed ed in nosing out a victory over the brown and white nine the situa tions were tense throughout as in every contest between the two ri vals the only marring incidents were the several disagreements which arose at various stages in the game anderson was master of the situation he allowed only four hits while girard and g brown were touched up^or ten lehigh's fielding coupled with superb hitting should have won the game but the breaks favored lafayette lehigh's hits were widely scattered until the sixth inning when fishburn singled followed by a three-bagger from keady's bat and a single by lees which tallied two runs g brown then took the mound for lafayette and kept lehigh's hits scattered a costly error in the seventh inning gave lafayette two runs and an overthrow coupled with a slow re turn from the outfield in the eighth was responsible for the winning run
