recognized that by this system a number of our students could be substantially aided and that they thus could earn their living by serv ice alike creditable to them and of a character not to seriously inter fere with their study work now much has recently been said and discussed about the institution of systems to fo d ■' • n a in this connection our students should recognize that the college commons afford without cost or advances of any kind by the stu dent-body a means for every twelve men who form a table to furnish his entire cost of living to a student acting as a waiter and that the commons are thus the readiest and most effective means of student self-help available it should be always borne in mind that the college commons were ins tituted by the trustees of the uni versity on dr estes's advice and dr drinker's motion absolutely and solely for the convenience and benefit of the student-body to the end that there might be one place in the bethlehems where the sup plies and food served were under the direct supervision of the uni versity authorities were certainly pure and good and properly pre pared and cooked and where serv ice was given at the lowest possible rates no intermediate contractor's profit comes in no one is or can be interested in serving cheap sup plies to make an individual profit the service is absolutely and whol ly by the university it is a matter of absolute indif ference to the university whether one hundred two hundred three or more hundred up to the limit of five hundred students take their meals at the commons but it is a matter of vital
