cooley acting professor of greek dr cooley outlined briefly the history of apollo's most famous or acle the sanctuary that grew up about it and of the great games in honor of zeno at olympia he spoke of the widely different natu ral surroundings in one case the great cliff of mt parnassus front ing another mountain with a deep gorge between ; in the other a peace ful river a valley with gentle hills and groves of trees continuing the speaker told of the recovery of these show places of ancient greece through modern excavation olym pia was excavated by the germans in 1874-81 while delphi was foun ded by the french in 1892-1903 at both places most of the buildings mentioned by the traveler pausan ias of the second century were identified and valuable finds of sculpture and inscription made not to mention smaller discoveries these are housed and exhibited in s two large local museums erected through the munificence of the greek millionaire syngos with the help of 100 slides the audience was guided by dr cooley through the ruins as they appear to-day buildings of all ages from the continued on fourth page the annual minstrel show will be given to-morrow evening in drown hall last year's show set a much higher standard than had been maintained in previous years and this year's show while quite different bids fair to live up to the reputation set by the 1911 per formance the first part will be an old fashioned minstrel show but with quite a number of surprises and novel features the end-men will be packard 14 mcconnor 14 baldwin 14 chandler 15 mccol ly 16 and wynne 16 all of whom will be heard in coon songs besides these the audience will have an opportunity to hear as so loists two new men morris and sellers the second part will be a black face burlesque with music on por tions of the mikado written by frank dumont and played by lew dockstader's minstrels the sce nery and costumes will be entirely japanese after the show the floor will be cleared for an informal dance which will last until midnight ; mu sic for both show and dance being furnished by the college orchestra the first twelve rows will be re served the price of these seats is 1.00 and they can be obtained from professor palmer as well as the unreserved seats at seventy-five cents which can be obtained from any member of the show or at the door on saturday evening the overture will start named for h l ar benz civil and mining engineer at wheeling w va mr arbenz was graduated from lehigh in the class of 1895 the arbenz is the second car that is a product of a product of lehigh the other being the packard car designed by james w packard of the class of 1884 article by lehigh man the december ist issue of the associated sunday magazine con tained an article the factor of success by george buchannan fife of the class of 1891 soccer games will be played on the athletic field every tuesday and thursday at 4 o'clock all stu dents of the university are eligible the games will be held in conjunc tion with the wrestling team prac tice as one of the primary objects of the promotion of soccer is to get the wrestlers in the best possible conditions teams will be picked from the candidates who report notice electricals chapel attend ance posted the regular december meeting of the electrical engineering so ciety will be held in the physics lecture room on tuesday even ing december 17th at 7.45 pro fessor seyfert will read a paper on high frequency electric os cillations supplemented with spe cial experiments the chef promises a rare feed the december number of the journal of accountancy contains an article by dr saliers entitled the compulsory depreciation charge it considers a number of court decisions dealing with the subject of depreciation and notes the changing attitude of the courts on this important matter the keynote of the article is the fol lowing paragraph : the stockholder is chiefly inter ested in two things — the preserva tion of his capital and the income derived from it he reads his com pany's annual report trusting that the facts are as indicated in the balance sheet and profit and loss statement if they are not he has neither the assurance that his divi dend is the real amount of his in come nor that his capital is unim paired if the proper charges have been made against gross profits for the fiscal period his dividend rep resents true profit if not profits are overstated and capital is de creased to the extent of the error regular wrestling practices are being held now on monday wed nesday and saturday of each week a number of last year's varsity men are reporting at each practice and assisting captain herr and coach sheridan in drilling the can didates it is important that each student who expects to enter in the novice meet which is to be held about the middle of january should observe the following requirements 1 each candidate must have had fifteen full practices before the meet 2 there must be two con testants in each class that is no award will be made except as is decided by actual bouts 3 no varsity men will be allowed to enter the meet 4 each winner is expected to come out to practices throughout the rest of the season unless he can produce some good excuse this meet will offer a good chance to those who might not otherwise receive any recognition and it is hoped that many will meeting of the mechanical society was held last tuesday evening in williams hall at eight o'clock president finn presided a paper was read by janeway 13 on methods of producing sound steel he spoke of the necessity of producing sound steel for rails and building girders and enumerated many fatal accidents due to flaws in rails and steel structural work he suggested a method of adding aluminum to the steel ingot which had been tried by several companies but which prov ed too wasteful a method to be profitable in sheffield england a method of keeping the head of the ingot hot while the base is cooling thus doing away with shrinkage has proved most successful in produc ing a flawless steel lieutenant gruthan the united states inspector in the ordnance department of the bethlehem steel company read a paper entitled ordnance and gunnery he laid especial stress on the difference which must be made between ord nance and gunnery showing that continued on fourth page i with the victory over perm fresh in their minds lehigh's basket-ball team defeated the moravian col lege five on wednesday afternoon by the score of 46 to 17 the game which was played in the new gym nasium of the moravian college was called at 4.15 o'clock and pre sented a snappy exhibition of bas ket-ball throughout due to a small floor passing was not much in evidence and dribbling and close following of the ball were the chief feature the length of the first half was twenty minutes and the score and the end of that half stood 33 to 8 in the second half green and berg replaced cole and price as guards and late in the half rapp and geyer were substi tuted in the place of crichton and white the scoring continued till at the end of fifteen minutes le high's five had added thirteen points though the brown and white team proved superior in shooting dribbling and knowledge of the game the moravian college quintet deserves much credit for their snap py and consistent playing crich ton garnered the most
