during the lecture period on last friday morning dr cooley acting professor in the department of greek and greek literature lectur ed on the subject of athens be fore a large body of students and faculty members the talk was ac companied throughout by lantern slides showing photographic views of modern athens and the ruins of the ancient city a map which con tained a route through the city was thrown on the screen and dr cool ey adapted his talk to the explana tion of the sights of athens as if conducting his audience on a tour around the capitol naturally the largest share of attention was given to the site of the old city and the ruins of some of the public build ings still in a rare state of preser vation the usual approach to athens is by way of the aegean sea which borders the city and along which are several harbors starting from the hotel in constitution square where the tour began views were shown of the palace a white marble structure of modern design which continued on supplement hon chas n chadwick to address politics club college lecture a meeting of the wireless club was held in the physics building december 19th the program in cluded a paper by f c brockman 15 telling of his station at his home another interesting talk on methods of tuning was given by m o andrews 16 mr andrews explained different methods of pre venting interference by use of an inductively coupled receiving set the wireless club has attracted considerable attention for a new or ganization as the subject is thor oughly up-to-date the club is of na tural interest to those connected with electrical work intercollegiate indoor rifle match dr drinker speaks at the ban quet in new york nearly sixty members of the le high university club of greater new york turned out for the de cember meeting which was held at the machinery club 50 church street on friday evening decem ber 20th following a banquet schuyler b knox 93 president of the club called upon dr drinker who spoke briefly on matters rela ting to the university the guest of the evening b f cresson jr 94 deputy commissioner of docks and ferries city of new york was then introduced and held the close attention of his fellow alumni for over an hour by a very able and thorough presentation of the dock situation in new york harbor the address was illustrated with many lantern slides showing both actual conditions and pleted for a dinner to the foot-ball squad marking the success of the 1912 season to be held in the eagle hotel bethlehem on thursday ev ening january 9th the entire brown and white squad will be the guests of the athletic committee funds having been raised for this purpose without in any way draw ing on the treasury of the athletic association all members of the squad are invited to turn out the affair will begin at 8 o'clock in a recent meeting of the execu tive committee of the politics club it was decided to combine the de cember and january meetings of the club owing to the fact that the christmas vacation and the mid year examinations both conflict with the time set for the regular meet ings of these months consequent ly the next meeting of the club will be held on tuesday january 14th at 8 o'clock p m in the physics lecture room at this meeting there will be giv en an illustrated lecture on the cats kill aqueduct by hon charles n chadwick commissioner of water supply of new york city mr chadwick comes here highly recommended by the secretary of the intercollegiate civic league as this meeting is open to all students and members of the faculty a large attendance is expected it is hoped that all who can will avail them selves of the opportunity of hear ing this lecture which should be of special interest to lehigh students as coming engineers the speaker at the college lecture next friday morning january 10th will be dr hugh p baker dean of the new york state college of forestry at syracuse university his talk will be on forestry and will be illustrated by stereopticon slides dr baker is a graduate of mac alester college and has the degrees of bachelor of science from the michigan agricultural college master of forestry from yale and doctor of economics from the uni versity of munich for ten years he was forest assistant in the uni ted states forest service examin ing public lands for forestry reser vation in central idaho wyoming nebraska new mexico washing ton and oregon from 1904 to 1906 he was professor of forestry in the lowa state college for the last six years he has been dean of the new york state college of fores try dr baker is a brother of ray stannard baker the magazine wri ter attendance of students is requi red notice schulz 10 a benedict orchestra dance there will be an orchestra dance on saturday january 11th at 8.30 p m in legiate indoor rifle league in which the team from the university will take part will be held on the range in packer hall on tuesday even ing the match will be shot under the supervision of capt r lamb jay perkins talbot and taylor the five highest scores at both standing and prone to be se lected positions on the team are open to any members of the student body and changes will be made as new material is developed at the regular practice held on monday wednesday and friday evenings a match with the other colleges will be held every tuesday evening at eight o'clock there will be an university bethlehem pa tuesday january 7 1913 dec meeting of chemists new york lehigh club vol xx miners hear interesting talks lecture by dr cooley dr wherry and clemmitt 13 speak at the december meeting papers read on general chem istry and synthetic chemistry many students and faculty mem bers hear talk on athens general chemistry by dr wherry of the geology department and synthetic chemistry by hartzell 14 were the papers read at the december meeting of the chemical society hartzell's synthetic chemistry dealt with the building up of com plex substances from simpler ones the preparation of many com pounds by this method was discuss ed in detail the most important of these being ammonia nitrates rub ber from starch camphor indigo using naphthalene as a base nar cotics perfumes and precious stones dr wherry in his talk on gen eral chemistry stated that ele ments had been found on the stars by means of their spectra ele ments are found to decompose on the stars and on the brighter stars are found only hydrogen and he continued on fourth page wireless club meeting at the december meeting of the mining and geological society held recently in williams hall the mem bers were entertained by well-pre pared addresses by prof edgar t wherry and by j e cunningham 13 mr cunningham had for his subject the kentucky mountain and the mountaineers his art icle showed the conditions and char acteristics of these people and ex plained in detail some of the feuds which are continually being carried on between families of kentucky and the vicinity dr wherry's talk was on geo chemistry in which he illustrated some of the recent researches made in this field he spoke at length of the geological conditions of the earth in the past present and fu ture dr wherry showed very clearly the difference between the nebular hypothosis and the planetesimal theory he also told of the many ingenious methods which have been used in the investigations of the generation of life -
