relay team to richmond the february meeting of the civil engineering society was held last friday evening in the physics building there were about thirty students and members of the fac ulty in attendance f w wilson 14 spoke ably on the interchange traffic yards and prof h eck feldt professor of mining engi neering gave an interesting discus sion on the methods of blasting f w wilson proved himself to be thoroughly familiar with the subject the interchange traffic yards he showed blue-prints which demonstrated how this sys tem has been put into effect on the baltimore & ohio railroad and he stated that it is thoroughly practical prof eckfeldt discussed fully the various methods of blasting he re viewed the entire history of blast ing from the earlier time and through the successive stages down until to-day he especially em phasized the matter of fuses and methods of setting off blasts his talk proved very interesting and highly instructive after the meeting proper came a spiel which was thoroughly en joyed by all it was announced at the meeting that on wednesday march 12th the society will be the guests of dr and mrs h s drinker at their home on the campus y m c a meeting a very important college meet ing was held in packer hall fri day morning president rooney of the senior class read a recom mendation of the athletic commit tee to increase the matriculation fee from ten dollars the present fee to twelve dollars the addition al two dollars going to the support of athletics statistics showing the annual expenditure in the various sports from 1906 to 1912 were read it showed that the total an nual expense of 1912 over that of 1909 was 50 also that there was not a corresponding return and consequently required more funds realizing what better coaching and better equipment of teams has meant to lehigh the recommenda tion was unanimously accepted g c hill 13 member of the athletic committee announced that the tennis association had peti tioned the committee to grant in signia to members of the team and that tennis be taken in charge by the athletic committee as a minor sport after much discussion it was decided that the matter should be put in the hands of a commit tee of seven which should have the voice of the student-body this committee is to consider the advi sability of the same and submit their report to the athletic com mittee at their next meeting c r wylie 13 presented reso lutions of the x-arcadia stating that all the members had resigned continued on fourth page to mr charles l taylor negotiations are under way to send the relay team to richmond va to attend the richmond col lege meet which will be held there this coming saturday in the event of lehigh attending the meet the team will be matched against either the university of virginia johns hopkins or washington and lee all three of these teams are evenly matched hopkins defeated vir ginia and washington and lee in baltimore three weeks ago while washington and lee defeated hop kins and the carlisle indians last saturday in washington the time of the latter race was four-fifths of a second slower than the race be tween lehigh and new york uni versity which the gatham quartette won by less than a yard charles wesley burns gave a very impressive talk on how religion figures in a man's life at the y m c a meeting in drown memorial hall sunday ev ening mr burns stated that the modern college man requires a sim ple creed and a serviceable spirit the college man of to-day looks upon religion as he does a science he requires a reason and a founda tion the speaker mentioned that this requirement is answered in faith the meeting was jed by barley 14 and special music was render ed by the mandolin club notice seniors tennis committee in its biggest game the lehigh basket-ball team defeated swarth more last saturday afternoon at swarthmore 32 to 30 closing the most successful season the brown and white has had for years the old basket-ball rivals put up a brill iant and fast game no more than a few points ever separating them and the lead continually changing from one to the other lehigh's left guard p j white shot the winning basket while the time keeper was watching the second hand of the time-piece count the last half minute of play swarthmore first scored in the game on weaver's foul shot but capt muthart of lehigh soon ev ened matters and gave lehigh the lead with a foul goal and a ringer from the floor a basket by lucas fouls by weaver and two spectac ular shots from the center of the floor by mckissick furnished most of the points for the garnet team in the first half the scoring end ed at 18 to 16 lehigh's contribu tions being mostly from muthart and crichton lehigh came back in the second half and having become used to the conditions quickly assumed the lead only to lose it by some fast team work of the home quintet the guarding was much closer and harder this half both teams being afraid to take any chances capt muthart did wonderful work for the brown and white in his last game evening up the score practically every time swarthmore appeared to have cinched the con test with a basket or foul goal mckissick for swarthmore was likewise the life of his team two long-distance baskets by him seem ingly gave the quakers the game near the end of the second half putting the score 30 to 27 by fast work however the game went le high's way on a foul and two goals i by p j white the game was the twelfth vic tory of fourteen games played by coach keady's men among the teams defeated is cornell the champions of the eastern inter collegiate league and from the continued on third page orchestra dance the most successful orchestra dance of the season was held in drown memorial hall on saturday evening there were about forty five couples present all the latest popular pieces were played by the orchestra and enjoyed by those in attendance light refreshments were served during the intermis sion the price per plate of the senior banquet will be 3.75 tickets for the same may be obtained any time after to-morrow from any of the following seniors : campbell clark hill jamieson fahl gerhard and levan base-ball candidates the following committee has been appointed by h l rooney presi dent of the senior class to consid er the advisability of awarding the tennis team some form of insignia and to l taylor our respected trustee and alumnus of the class of 1876 has offered through his generosity to pay our beloved alma mater a lasting trib ute to his loyalty and whereas this tribute is design ed to fill a want long needed by the university namely the construc tion of a new gymnasium and the remodeling of the athletic field be it resolved that we the stu dent-body of lehigh university ex tend to mr charles l taylor our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for his liberality and furthermore be it resolved that a copy of these resolutions be printed in the lehigh papers namely the brown and ly trained up to the best possible shape to meet lehigh and no doubt expected the hard race which le high gave them for they ran an ex ceptional race winning by only a yard in very fast time j m burke 16 a member of the team was also entered in the open 880-yard run about twenty-five men were given handicaps over burke and the latter was allowed a five-yard handicap on meredith the olympic star at the end of the race however burke had distanced all of his lead ers at the beginning of the race and retained his handicap over mere dith winning the race easily in two minutes four and four-fifths
