the y m c a was address ed last sunday by judge beaver of the superior court of pennsylva nia judge beaver who is quite intimately associated with the y m c a work at state college is an ex-governor of pennsylvania hav ing held office during the term 1887 1891 he is also a retired briga dier-general and trustee of penn state college he was introduced by e e yake,"'12 who led the meeting the meeting was the first of a number which the local y m c a has arranged to hold monthly on sunday mornings and which are to be addressed by men prominent in religious or industrial activity although encouraging for an initial meeting the attendance it is hoped will be greatly increased at the fol lowing meetings judge beaver chose for his sub ject the all-around man and took the opportunity to criticize to some extent the present state of athletic activity he brought to the attention of his listeners the old greek proverb know thyself and dwelt on the necessity of each man knowing himself in order that he might see where he is lacking and where he may improve close ly related to this greek proverb is the latin a sound mind in a sound body this old roman idea was completely neglected in tire former method of collegiate training at that time the develop ment of the mind was the sole ob ject in view and in consequence men graduated from college far in ferior physically today the pen dulum has swung too far the other way perhaps and we have too much individual physical development rather than a moderate amount for every one there is another factor in our life equally important as the mind and the body this is the spiritual development man is a tribunal of mind body and spirit ; without the third he would be an animal and it was to the necessity of the im provement of our spiritual selves that judge beaver paid particular attention the keynote was pre pare for your life here-after how little does our mortal span of life compare with the eternity of life that is to come to prepare for this we must follow christ to'fol low him we must know him ; and we can do this only by bible study before closing general beaver made a special plea for the forma tion of bible study groups in all the fraternity houses and in the dormi tories it was decided to have the next meeting on tuesday evening no vember 21st notice to this effect will be sent to all the men who at tended the meeting on sunday and any other men who desire to engage in the work may enter the club at this time after this date a wait ing list will be established and va cancies in the club rilled by choos ing men from that list come out to cheering practice this means you at the meeting of the politics club of lehigh university on sun day afternoon the constitution pre pared since the meeting two weeks ago was discussed slightly changed and adopted the following committee was ap pointed to arrange programs for the regular monthly meetings of the present year : kerr chairman mccomas mot ter tinges and sultzer the college smoker preceding the ursinus game of saturday was a unique one in its way practi cally the entire student body was in attendance in spite of the most un favorable weather conditions and although the smoker itself cannot be made to look good on paper it was in reality an unusually suc cessful one a sophomore-freshman basket ball game had originally been sched uled as one of the features of the evening although a week's no tice had been given the freshmen failed to develop a quintette and the proposed contest was therefore cancelled at the last minute a wrestling bout had also been ar ranged but one of the participants was ill-disposed and this toft was taken off the program the places originally reserved for speaking and for college songs and cheers were all that could be counted on and there was absolutely no time remaining for feature numbers of the evening up against this state of things the smoker committee did . excel lently e s colling 12 was pressed into service and a mass cheering practice as it were was held all the cheers were gone over and then pamphlets distributed containing six absolutely new songs written specially for the football season by several of the students a prize had been offered for the best cheer and two prizes for the songs of leading merit the smok er proved a medium for permitting the student body to act in the ca pacity of a judge and the result was better by far than those in charge of the affair had imagined it would be promptly at eight o'clock cheer leader guth called for the three le high's that opened the evening's en tertainment sons of lehigh was then sung during which pipes and tobacco were distributed to all those present mr emery acting president of the university during dr drinker's tour of the world was the first speaker he praised the idea of college smokers regarding them as one of the big factors in the devel opment of the only man mr emery sees worth while — the all-around college man throughout his ad dress mr emery made frequent tributes to the team that had ten days before tied princeton he was enthusiastically cheered and three lehigh's with mr emery on the end on collegeville's husky bunch by scoring in the first quarter the game is played on a muddy field lehigh fulfilled the fondest ex pectations of her supporters on sat urday when she took the husky ur sinus team into camp the score coming in the first quarter of the game on a fumble by posey on his own 4-yard line which bailey re covered and fumbled wiley finally getting the pigskin and plunging over the line for the score ursinus kicked off wiley catch ing it on his 50-yard line the vis itors opened their offensive tactics with a successful forward pass of 15 yards followed by a 10-yard end run after a plunge of 8 yards through tackle ursinus tried a placement kick but it was blocked another 12 yards through tackle ended the advance as goyne and flick stopped the next two rushes on the resulting kick pazzetti made a brilliant run of half the length of the field lehigh could not gain an inch so kicked mccaffrey re covering the ball flick and crich ton made a first down after sev eral exchanges of punts mccaffrey again fell on the ball pazzetti punted west being downed on his 6-yard line on the next play wi ley took the leather over after the fumble pazzetti failed to kick the goal the second quarter showed ursi nus gaining more ground by line plunges and forward passes than lehigh but the brown and white team followed the ball unerringly recovering fumble after fumble the half
