coast arranged and i haven't yet gotten over the cx i hilaration of that morning at will iams arizona when on opening the los angeles newspaper of oc tober 12th i was confronted with a flaring head-line lehigh huskies hold princeton it was like our experience two years ago at beyrout in syria when mrs drinker asked some students at the american college whether they had a college yell and they thinking she asked for their college song broke out with their alma mater sung to the same tune and in the same metre as our lehigh alma mater think of picking up a local news paper in the far west and being greeted familiarly with such foot ball news from home i put on my hat and went straight to the telegraph office and wired my congratulations regardless of tele graph tolls to the team and to prof reiter i subsequently saw notices of the game in several other western papers and it will please you to know that in this journey as in my pre vious ones i have ever found le high's name an open sesame to kindly and hearty consideration wherever college men abide we are reaping in reputation the har vest for which we are indebted to the good seed sown in the past and to the careful husbandry of our faculty lehigh is known by her works and we need not fear that the sympathetic supervision and en couragement we are now giving to the development of a general ath letic training and spirit in the insti tution will harm us on the con trary engineers generally endorse the views of grace and warriner and zollinger and of our alumni who advocate the policy the facul ty is giving you a chance to work out of developing a college body which understands how to balance good well-regulated all-college ath letics with hard steady scholastic work we left san francisco on time at 1 p m on october 17th on the steamship manchuria of the pa cific mail line mrs drinker and i with capt and mrs r w hunt dr and mrs r w raymond mr and mrs david williams and messrs d w brunton and w l saunders are seated in a party at the captain's table thus renewing our similar association on the pan ama trip captain dixon is a ge nial gentleman whose manner in spires confidence and who has won the enthusiastic plaudits of the young ladies aboard by rigging up for them on deck a large swimming tank of canvas to which the hum bler sex is also admitted on pro bation the discipline care for the com fort of passengers and the service generally are superbly good the food is very good the coffee ex cellent the stateroom and table service by chinese servants is ad mirably directed and carried on much more satisfactorily than with the english and german servants we met with on our previous voy ages their pigeon-english is funny kitty's cabin-steward the other day after vainly searching in her state-room for a pin she had lost reported — no find here must lost top-side meaning that she had probably lost it on the upper deck the make-up of the crew is in teresting and is as follows deck announced two op tional classes which will be held regularly in the gymnasium from 4.00 to 5.00 p m every tuesday and thursday there will be a class in elementary wrestling designed to develop candidates for the varsity wrestling team and at the same time take from the hands of the regular wrestling coach the burden some detail and thus allow him time to instruct the more advanced men in the finer points of the game the class in elementary wrestling is open to everyone in college prof reiter will have charge of the group of embryo wrestlers the other class is designed to bring together all the men who de sire regular exercise and have not the time to go into any of the regu lar gymnasium groups to speak in precise terms the class will re ceive under the direction of mr kimball instruction in general gym nastics and gymnastic dancing this opportunity should appeal strongly to all the men who fully appreciate the need of regular ex ercise and cannot join one of the regular classes it should prove of particular value to those men who are interested in dramatic work all the men who can avail them selves of the opportunity afforded by these classes for better physical development should appear at the gymnasium at the proper time without further notice the first of a long series of bas ketball games included in lehigh's 1911-1912 basketball schedule was played on wednesday afternoon against moravian college in the moravian parochial gymnasium this was the first opportunity to try out the men against a strange team and was the only chance that our team will have had to play away from home before they meet princeton next wednesday the first half started off with a rush and both teams played rather loosely for a while muthart at center a k white and p j white at forward griffith and cole at guard started the game for lehigh the work of our men at intervals was marked with brilliancy but was not as consistent as it might have been both sides in the first half did not cover closely and the result was rather frequent scoring on both sides it must be remem bered however in this connection that most of the men have had but a few weeks of practice and several of them only a few days the score at the end of the first half was moravian 11 lehigh 39 soon after the opening of the second half green sindell price and geyer replaced a k white griffith cole and p j white res pectively as a result of talks be tween the halves both teams played closer during the second period and kept down the score on both sides the final score was moravian 19 lehigh 61 captain cook on account of an injury to his hands caused by an alcohol explosion was unable to play muthart who alone scored 29 points for lehigh was easily the star of the game t mueller in opening game the members of the class of 95 in particular and lehigh men in general will note with an interest mingled with pride the part that m l cooke 95 will play in the administration of municipal affairs in philadelphia during the next four years his appointment to the office of director of public works by mayor blankenburg has met with the hearty approval of the tax payers of philadelphia concerning mr cooke the public ledger has the following to say : morris l cooke will bring to the administration one of the most experienced engineers in the effi ciency movement he is recognized as an authority on the subject of perfecting economies and increas ing efficiency with cost of produc tion lessened while he will de vote himself as head of the depart ment of public works to the sub jects of awarding the great bulk of municipal contracts a most impor tant task which will absorb his time for the first year will be a study of continued on supplement
