. forty men reported for track and field work among which schulz vannort jordan bailey mickel tinges gorman bickley knox williams and cox are last year's men the remaining twenty-nine men are as follows : faherty kutz leb rehfuss burns mclaughlin sterner lyon wheeler f.c.will iams liebig rupp schiffer f w green fowler hushbay plack prickett kavanaugh raine schock ley galainena sanderson kuth wagner nicholas d b wood wotring polster and tull in the roughest and most unsatis factory game of basketball played so far this season lehigh on satur day evening at brooklyn went down to defeat before a team which they a few weeks ago defeated by a score of 56 to 15 although pratt insti tute from the start showed by va rious means a rigid determination to win the game their team was not able to score a field goal during the first ten minutes of play a k white after about two minutes of play scored the first point for le high by a goal from the field in the middle of the first half green at right guard was relieved by price pratt after the two minute inter mission seemed to take on new life and hayden the left forward in as many minutes cleanly scored two goals from the field another field goal by a k white and three goals from fouls by muthart brought le high's total number of points for the first half up to 7 a goal by randall and six goals from fouls by gayton gave pratt a total of 12 points for the first period the second half differed little from the first half except that it was even rougher two goals by a k white one each by crichton and muthart coupled with one goal from a foul by the latter netted le high her total of sixteen points here hayden again came to the res cue of his team and scored two more goals from the field a field goal and five goals from saturday night the basketball team will journey to swarthmore to line up against the garnet and white for the first time this season this is the first of the series of four hard games which completes the season's schedule swarthmore has four of last year's team and will prove a strong opponent candidates will report at drown hall wednesday february 14 at 2.15 p m this includes last year's men as well as new material the varsity basketball team on saturday afternoon saw the hippo drome production around the world the team returned to bethlehem on sunday evening the try-outs of the wrestling team to see who is to go on the princeton trip were held saturday afternoon in the 135-lb class — miller 12 won irom wood 14 and fowler 12 the latter going three minutes extra in the 145-lb class — flick and mart went eighteen minutes when flick forfeited mart getting the decision tice was given the decision over williams in the iss-lb.'bout and cox 1 won from ackerly in seven and a half minutes in the heavy-weight class there were no challengers against herr in the 115-lb and st john in the 125-lb classes the second exhibition of the gym team took place in the mora vian seminary gymnasium satur day evening most of the students of the seminary were in attendance and showed their satisfaction of the work done by the men by much ap plause . capt bailey first did some tumb ling followed by kimbal both had very clever stunts and showed they were well able to perform the same menefee and capt bailey did some exercises on the side horse four men did work on the parallel bars capt bailey kimbal weber and teeple each man re ceived much applause excellent work was done on the rings by kimbal capt bailey and weber a feature which took very well was the gymnastic dancing by roll and liebig teeple and vitzthum it was 1 necessary for these men to respond to encores the exhibi tion was concluded by dances taught in the freshman gymnastic work green and vitzthum participating the candidates for spring sports vol xix lehigh loses to pratt by the score of 23-16 brooklynites win a rough game baseball lacrosse and track men turn out in large numbers student body passes resolutions at college meeting friday dramatic club to start prepara tions for this years show for the purpose of welcoming dr drinker and of putting into some definite shape the long-pon dered-over question of compulsory exercise for all students a college meeting was held last friday dr drinker was given a rousing wel come and after talking briefly of his trip he spoke at length on the above question and gave the views of the faculty alumni and trus tees he declared that to do any good the exercise must be compul sory coach reiter yake ter williger bailey and others spoke along the same lines and after a general discussion a resolution was adopted that the resolutions to be acted upon should be so framed as to make the exercise compulsory pres edwards spoke about the poor treatment of the furniture and magazines in drown hall and made several announcements dugan explained that the junior commit tee as part of its plans was about to issue promissory notes of 1.00 each to start a second-hand book store to be run by students who needed financial aid these notes will be due in a year and will fur nish the necessary capital to start such an enterprise after the meeting there was a short meeting of the senior class at which the banquet committee was appointed as follows h.m.smyth chairman shurtz kennedy birds all cook bonine and peters gym team exhibition at moravian seminary extensive preparations have been made for the annual production of the mustard and cheese dramatic association the selection of a play has been narrowed down to two both of which are good shows the final selection to be made by the coaches in the early part of next week for this season two coaches have been engaged each one being a past master in his own line for the dialogue end of the show the ser vices of j e gheen of bethlehem have been engaged mr gheen successfully handled the production of the gahuwa canoe club's play and is especially well fitted for this work the success of the above play is a sufficient guarantee of his worth the chorus and cast will be train ed in dancing by c l downing who had charge of last year's suc cessful production he has been here so often that no mention of his abilities need be made except that he has trained the mask and wig and is at present training the state college dramatic club the dan cing in last year's show was said to be on a par with any ever had in the older clubs as the princeton triangle etc trips are being arranged for the season the most important ones be ing another trip to national park seminary washington d c and to wilkes-barre the outcome of the latter trip rests partly upon the way in which the northeastern penna lehigh club takes it up the trip to washington last year was the best one had here in years and was a great success one more trip is in view either to reading pottsville or lebanon . the first call for candidates is on wednesday february 14 at 2.15 p m in drown hall this in cludes all candidates and especially the smaller men who are suitable to take female characters . wrestling try-outs in response to coach reiter's call for candidates for the baseball la crosse and track teams a large num ber of men turned out in the gym nasium on saturday afternoon at 1.30 o'clock from this number lists were made by the managers of those who were trying out for the various teams and preliminary in structions were given for commen cing the work of training coach reiter gave many hints and some helpful advice along this line train ing will start immediately and will consist of light running gymnasium work and dancing with occasional practice in the cage in all twenty-eight candidates for the baseball team have been listed of these bell driscoll mac hardy and gatch remain as a nucleus from last year's team four pitchers and five catchers reported and were as signed work for the present in bat teries those who reported are as follows : hill shaw driscoll hart zell shurts douglass
