the revolution in the north is the newly-elected provisional president of the chinese republic yuan shi-kai upon continued on third page those who braved the very bad weather on wednesday evening and turned out to attend the miners meet in williams hall were treated to three very interesting talks by frank hirshberg 13 mr bartlett and prof landis on the subjects of ore mining by steam shovel mining in the south-west and oil floatation in general respect ively rather than talk directly upon his subject hirshberg chose to describe mining conditions as encountered by the oliver mining co in the mesabi range at hibbing minne sota and the uses to which this company puts steam shovels he first gave a general description of the plant this company was giv en the order to manufacture 77 out of the 100 steam shovels now in use in the construction of the panama canal shovels are classified ac cording to weight and to manner of mounting usually the boom on large machines swings through an arc of about 260 degrees the en gines run from about the dimensions of 13 x 16 inches to 8 x 8 inches the shovels are used mainly for loading and stripping the ore is blasted in such a manner as to loos en it but not cause it to fall and the steam shovel then takes it up an example of a day's work at the mines was also given showing how almost every second of time is ac counted for and how the maximum amount of ore is mined at a mini mum cost mr bartlett also chose to diverge from his subject and speak more upon the geography of the south west than upon the mining there arizona is about two bartlett and hirshberg 13 the electricals held their first meeting of the second term on tuesday evening and it was poor ly attended for such a flourishing society the committee on the epitome insert reported that first prize for the design was awarded to irving samuels 12 a f wotring 12 read the first paper on telephony taking the immense american telephone co capitalized at 263,500,000 as an ex ample of modern enterprise and ad vanced ideas the western elec tric co which produces the bell phones is a subsidiary of this com pany and the net earnings of the combination are 32,000,000 wot ring next discussed up-to-date prac tice with especial reference to the loading of the lines to balance the increased capacity effect of very long circuits thus making conver sation more distinct wenner 12 followed with a pa per on selenium a very peculiar substance which has the property of changing its resistance under the in fluence of light he described the selenium cell and some interesting experiments that can be performed with it the last paper of the evening was read by e a wolfe of the west inghouse co on industrial motors and their applications he gave a complete description of the va rious direct and alternating current motors telling the particular sphere of each type and supplementing the oral description by a number of ex cellent slides in conclusion mr wolfe expressed the hope that at least six of this year's graduates would see their way clear to take up the westinghouse apprentice ship course which has been greatly improved in the last year penn state here tomorrow early next april lehigh uni versity will tender hospitality to physicians educators and other citi zens of the state who will assemble here for a conference on the con servation of school children con ducted under the auspices of the american academy of medicine the conference aims to interest and instruct not only members of the medical profession but public pa rochial and private school teachers school directors members of women's clubs — in a word all citi zens who have the welfare of chil dren at heart the first session is scheduled for wednesday afternoon april 3rd when medical inspection and su pervision will be discussed on wednesday evening the program will be more popular in character with two addresses by well-known speakers the thursday morning session will be devoted to subjects that should be taught in schools as a means of conservation and the way they should be taught the closing session is to be given to a discussion of the problems of de ficient and backward children the characterised the speeches made at the annual junior oratori cal contest which was held at 11.00 o'clock yesterday morning in pack er memorial church of the six men competing the judges awarded the first prize of 25.00 to chimin chu-fuh the second prize of 15.00 to s d williams and the third prize of 10.00 to h r griffen which decision was evidently in ac cordance with the popular verdict judging from the applause which followed the announcement of the awards after a few preliminary remarks apropos of the occasion dr drink er introduced the first speaker don ald bowman whose subject was thomas a edison mr bow man was succeeded by the follow ing speakers in the order given : — chimin chu-fuh on the present revolution in china william c fry jr on arbitration as a rem edy for war h r griffen on the short ballot william c rehfuss on economic signifi cance of the panama canal and s d williams on the regula tion of trusts the speeches were well prepared and on the whole well
