report on the progress of the arrangements for the debate with lafayette college showed that a definite announcement concerning the matter can be made before the opening of the easter recess the question submitted by the politics club is resolved that the united states should renounce the monroe doctrine and lafayette is required to make a definite reply before the easter vacation they have already signified their willia mess to debate the attention oil the men was called to the convention of the in tercollegiate civic league which will be held on thursday and friday april 11th and 12th w c fry jr 13 is lehigh's delegate to the convention and it is probable that he will be accompanied at least to new york by about six members of the club rehfuss 13 and williams 13 spoke ably on the commission form of government and its various forms of application in the cities of this and other countries profes sor stewart of the advisory board of the club well supplemented the discussion of the evening and in an interesting manner brought out pha ses of the question that the other speakers had omitted some of the men in this club have reached the limit of the number of absences permitted many of them being incurred because they did not know of the meeting until several days before the time designated in order to eliminate any such irregu larity it was decided to have all the regular meetings on the last tues day of each month in this way appointments previously made will be no excuse for an absence and the regular attendance will be markedly improved those who have reach ed the limit of absences will be re quired to explain satisfactorily or their names will be dropped from the roll the next meeting of the club will be held on april 30th the subject for discussion is the parcels post system the l contest notice at a meeting of the inter-collegi ate wrestling league representa tives in new york recently yale and lehigh were admitted to mem bership in the league this an nouncement will be welcomed by the large number of the student body who are interested in the pro motion and support of wrestling here at the university for lehigh's application for admission to the league had been twice refused the engagement of frederick farrar lines 02 superintendent of the bessemer department of the maryland steel company to miss may martin of sparrow's point maryland has lately been an nounced at 8 o'clock to-morrow night the annual l contest will be held in the gymnasium as added features to the gymnastic work there will be a basketball game between two freshman teams and several mem bers of the wrestling team will give exhibition bouts v lehigh opened her baseball sea son last wednesday in a successful manner by defeating lebanon val ley college to the tune of 5 to 0 it was not until the end of the third inning that lehigh commenced scoring at this time bell scored the first run which was closely fol lowed by a run by driscoll the remainder of the scoring was done in the eighth when mac hardy o keefe and crichton scored in rapid succession the game was un doubtedly a pitchers battle from the start and both twirlers showed good form pazzetti allowed only two hits and struck out six batters while little was hit seven times and struck out eleven men if the weather continues fair lehigh will be able to reach better condition by having more outside practices which up to the present time have been few and will be in a more fa vorable position to meet villa nova at home to-morrow and away on april bth the game started with lehigh in the field miller sent pazzetti a slow grounder and was thrown out at first smith struck out and car many was put out at first base by crichton unassisted lehigh then took the bat but was unsuccessful the valley in plans discussed for debate with lafayette after easter vacation the annual meeting of the ten nis association will be held on sat urday at 1.15 p m in drown hall at this time officers will be elected and plans for the present season discussed besides the present mem bers of the association it is hoped that a large number of new men who intend to take this form of ex ercise will turn out unfavorable weather conditions have prevented any progress in the way of getting the courts ready but in the next few days active work will be begun with the comple tion of the four new courts next to taylor hall and the two behind it the university is the possessor of eleven courts which ought to be enough to meet all needs during the present year the schedule which has been ar ranged for the tennis team is longer and more difficult than it has been for many years ■the matches are as follows : may 4 — navy at annapolis " 10 — gettysburg at home " 15 haver ford at haver ford " 19 — palmerton tennis club at palmerton " 22 lafayette at home " 25 — lafayette at easton " 30 — swarthmore at home negotiations are also under way for a match with pennsylvania state college to be played away on the 18th of may mustard and cheese since the final selection of the men for the mustard and cheese show the members of the cast and chorus have been industriously practising almost daily the fact that five rehearsals have been sched uled for this week shows what a consistent effort is being made to whip the show into shape coach downing is devoting his time to the songs and dancing of the chorus while mr gheen is over seeing the work of the cast in a short time the cast and chorus will be set to work together in complete rehearsal with the new music and amusing plot and the constant practice which is being put on it an excellent pro duction is assured to represent the university during junior week inter-collegiate league admits lehigh
