soph and senior cabinets installed last night by retiring officers deciding game won by score of 5-3 due to ex cellent playing of nevins red and blue lacrosse men suffer b & w defeat period causes defeat brilliant rally in second half following listless first final game of season frosh week 1 more game m & c sounds call for scenarios the championship for swarth i more swarthmore compiled 29 points and haverford 28 1-2 two association marks were shattered in the discus baker of swarthmore who in the preliminaries set up a new mark with 139 feet excelled his trials in heaving the saucer for a distance of 141 feet this was five feet better than the old association mark which in cidentally baker established in the championships last year the other new record hung con on page 2 col 7 the varsity lacrosse team closed the current season in a most befitting manner on sat urday afternoon when they ad ministered a 1 1 3 defeat to the red and blue-shirted players representing the university of pennsylvania after playing the initial half in a listless fash ion the homesters staged one of their reputed spurts in the fi nal chapter and emerged a big winner poor stickmanship and abil ity were exhibited by both teams in the first thirty mm talented students sought to write plot for next year's production college admission rules discussed begin now new epitome wins instant favor many features and unique art work brings unpre cedented praise now on sale utes lehigh was fortunate that sayhad and button decid ed to be generous at this point of the game the two penn sylvanians were guilty of knocking the ball into their own net while they were trying to break up some excellent scrim maging by the brown and white forces pakenham be gan things when he counted on a pretty pass sayhad made it even-stephen when he sent the pillet past schwimmer capt robinson then swept his team into the lead by scoring the first of his two pointers things looked bright for o'neill's proteges when the vis itors obliged with the two gift points but m morge was not to be denied his bril liant work enabled him to break through the lehigh de fense twice for scores before the half ended with lehigh leading 4-3 con on page 4 col 1 ) playing as if they were charged with electricity the homesters began an assault which was not to be denied — immediately at the beginning of the second session with on ly a few moments gone roberts last friday and saturday lehigh university acted as host to the colleges of the mid dle atlantic states while the championship games were run off taylor field resembled that old olympic stadium of the greeks the first exponents of track and field and never has the student body ever exper ienced such a gala day for track the meet was indeed thrill ing to the last race haver ford and swarthmore fighting for the championship to the last event from which swarth more emerged the victor by a scant half point haverford led in the point scoring up to the final race of the day the 220 event interest was intense when the five qualifying entries lined up for the finals in the 220 in which tiedeman of union was one of the strongest con tenders neck and neck tiede man and dutton the swarth more entry thundered toward the tape running one of the prettiest races of the day at the tape dutton seemed to lunge forward after the fashion of paddock winning the event and atbletic awards on alumni day sullivan wins tennis champ b & w ace emerges vic tor in intercollegiates and makes lehigh kunner-up wins cup for the third consecutive year lehigh wrested the base ball championship from lafay ette by winning the third and deciding game of the annual series at easton last saturday the score was 5 to 3 before the contest the teams were deadlocked lafayette won the first contest at easton while lehigh took the second at bethlehem the week previous to the final red nevins lehigh catcher was the outstanding hero of the struggle twice did the jo vial red prove his ability as a hitter by driving finkley's of ferings for four base hits both of these home runs came at the opportune time to run up le high's score nevins caught faultless ball aside from his heavy hitting the first of his clouts landed in the stands in deep left field and the second sailed over the right field wall finkley pitching for lafay ette was given poor support by his teammates especially in the early innings a total of seven hits was allowed by the ma roon hurler while six errors in the field were chalked up for his team weston started the game for lehigh and struck out three men before being relieved by seltzer who struck out five five hits were all that the la fayette men could secure from the brown and white pitchers lehigh started the game by running up an early lead of three runs by shoving across three runners on three hits a base on balls and 2 lafayette errors in the fifth the lafay ette cheerers took renewed hope when the maroon tied the score at three all their hope was shortlived however for con on page 3 col 7 the results of the college elections for officers of the y m c a for next year gave ir ving b miles the presidency the other offices being filled by charles k zug vice-president e giles secretary and h mar tindale treasurer there was some dispute about the office of vice-president but on the re count it was obvious that com plete returns had not been made on the initial count the students selected by the executive committee composed of the four officers of the or ganization assisted by secre tary trafford to act as com mittee chairmen on the senior cabinet are j laudig and p ketterer on membership r castor chairman of the hand book which is now in the pro cess of compilation ; s becker entertainment r lewis pervise the individual activity to which he is appointed and act jointly with the cabinet in carrying out the general pro gram j gordon ridsdale will serve as a member of the fac ulty advisoy board con on page 4 col 5 the plans for freshman week next fall were taken up in connection with the y m c a at a meeting of the newly appointed committee on fresh man week held at the dean's office on thursday may 20th professor stanley thomas as chairman presided and the first matter brought up was that of the presentation before the interfraternity jcouncil by robert a harrier of a new rushing rule to the effect that spike shoe club taps new men epitome board elected thursday society renders valuable service in running re cent intercollegiates 11 pledges at a recent meeting of the executive committee of the mustard and cheese club it was decided that a scenario compe tition would be held this com ing summer in much the same way as in previous years the ability of the undergraduates along play writing lines has been demonstrated by the work that has been turned in for consideration in the past the task of writing a scen ario is really quite an undertak ing but it is amply rewarded since the man or men whose story is accepted are certain of being taken into the club be cause it is such a task to turn out something worth while in this line announcement is being made at this time so that any one who feels inspired will have the entire summer to work on their ideas a call will be made for the material at the end of the sum mer and a committee of judg es will be appointed to select the scenario best fitted for the production of next year's show this will give the club an op portunity to make such revi sions and changes as are ne cessary and have something definite to work with when the time comes for the beginning of the production con on page 3 col 7 there are innumerable set tings and plots which can be used for this type of produc tion but it must be born in mind that there are limitations as to the amount of scenery and costuming that the club will be able to arrange for the show something involving college life either . at the present time or earlier or possibly a futur istic idea could be used with a great deal of humor and all the lehigh university calendar for the first time in many years the epitome of the jun ior class will be available be fore examination time and pri or to the closing of college this fact in itself speaks well for the co-operation of all those con cerned and together with the attractiveness of the bock should be an incentive for the complete sale of the one hun dred and fifty copies now re maining the inside front cover fea tures a very well sketched view of the hill-to-hill bridge and its environs with a written tribute to the designer and or iginator of this beautiful struc ture likewise a tribute to the prowess of lehigh engineers the few succeeding pages con tain excellent full-tone cuts of the various buildings and scenes on the campus among them are other pencil sketches in half-tone altogether presenting a very attractive entrance to the text of the epitome the previous practice of hav ing photographs of as many faculty members as possible in the faculty section has been done away with in view of the fact that most of these photo graphs are now very old and hardly resemble the professors as they are today in place of this only the photographs of each of the heads of the depart ment accompany the departmen tal groups into which the fac ulty are divided con on page 4 col 4 a very novel form of an in troductory plate has been intro duced for each section of the book with the formal drawing con on page 3 col 5 although kept from winning team honors for lehigh at the middle atlantic intercollegiate tennis tournament neil sulli van won the individual tennis championship title for the mid dle atlantic region and in ad dition brought back a team title for runners-up the first round of this tournament was held last saturday at n y u at which place n y u qualified three men swarthmore quali fied two men bucknell three delaware one johns hopkins one and lehigh one the second round of the tour nament was held at the haver ford courts on friday after noon may 21 four men were left at the end of this round ; namely sullivan of lehigh rudesill of bucknell hodge of swarthmore and creamer of delaware the third round of the tournament was held saturday morning and in this round the two victorious play ers survived by defeating creamer sullivan qualified for the finals and by winning a surprising victory over hodge rudesill of bucknell also qual ified for the finals sullivan had an easy time with creamer winning 6-1 6-2 but rudesill was forced to the limit taking his match 6-4 5-7 6-4 con on page 3 col 3 the finals were held at the haverford college courts on saturday afternoon sullivan notice con on page 4 col 3 notice between the quarter mile race and the low hurdle race at the intercollegiates satur day the local chapter of the spiked shoe society held their first pledging this society is comprised of lettermen from the track and cross-country
