pazzetti pitches brilliantly in game stopped by rain in ninth the april meeting of the mining society on wednesday evening in william's hall attracted a large number to enjoy a very excellent and well-appreciated program the first paper of the evening was on the nomenclature of iron and steel and prof j w richards being a member of a committee for testing iron and steel in his very interesting talk proved himself ca pable of discussing this subject in 1875 an international commit tee was called to name the different iron and steel products but failed another committee of twenty-four was created six years ago to jiiscuss the nomenclature of these products and to report to the international congress it was determined fi nally that all products having the same properties should have the same name regardless of how these may be formed dr e t wherry next spoke on the study of triastic rock of pennsylvania this field of study had not been dealt with until dr wtierry took it up what started the investigation was the finding of copper in the rock which was after wards learned to be four miles thick and to extend from the delaware river to maryland prof wherry showed many specimens and views of various rocks and told in detail how the many difficult problems met with were solved the only disappointment of the evening was that the lantern refused to work at times and in consequence many ex cellent slides were omitted after the two papers were read the customary feed was enjoyed by all sophomore cotillion the sophomore cotillion club furnished the first function of ju nior week in drown hall thurs day everting the dancing was held in the auditorium on the second floor which was simply decorated while the entire first floor was used as a reception-hall after a dance program of twenty numbers by the university orches tra refreshments were served the unusual number of house parties held among the different fraternities together with the large number of alumni back for junior week resulted in a considerable at tendance in the neighborhood of ninety couples or about two hun dred people in all were present twenty-five ladies of social promi nence acted as patronesses among their number being the wives of several faculty members continued on fourth page in the prettiest pitchers battle of the season lehigh and tufts play ed through eight exciting innings of a scoreless tie on wednesday the game was played on lehigh field a fairly good crowd being on hand despite the unfavorable condition of the weather the contest was fast and interesting neither team ap pearing to have any appreciable ad vantage early in the game gusts of wind bothered the players at times and in the seventh inning the weather became very threatening with tufts at the bat in the last inning and one down umpire fid ler called the teams off the field after a thirty-minute wait without any sign of a change in weather conditions the umpire called the game the flinging on both sides was remarkable pazzetti was invinci ble and for a long time it appeared that next year's football captain would register a no-hit game with two out in the seventh however captain hooper succeeded in land ing on one of pazzetti's fast ones for a clean solid single over short excepting this drive the visiting sluggers did not hit a ball out of the infield carter too pitched a remarkable game allowing but one hit and issuing but one pass only twenty-five men faced him in eight innings in addition he fanned nine bell albrecht and pazzetti being the only lehigh batsmen who failed to fall by the strike-out route tufts played an errorless game and mac hardy's lone error for le high was due to an unlucky bound on a comparatively easy chance laurie's running catch of pazzetti's hard drive in the third excelled for the new england collegians for lehigh bell's out on a foul from laurie's bat and o'keefe's excel lent work at third were features not a man on either team got as far around the circuit as third base in the seventh with two down hoo per secured the first hit of the game and stole second pazzetti how ever easily disposed of laurie the next batter by the strike-out route lehigh's best chance was in the third inning when with one down bell singled over second and stole crichton fanned however and al brecht was an easy out pazzetti in the third and mccaff rey in the fourth both hit hard to right center but brilliant catches by laurie prevented what would other wise have been clean hits there was one down and pazzet ti had two strikes on quakers when the contest was called in the ninth the return of junior week brings with it many guests to lehigh from far and near this year nine of the fraternities will hold house parties the dormitories have giv en up section e to the young ladies the guests at the dormitories are as follows mrs j h dugan of hazelton mrs j e edwards of scranton mrs kutzleb of balti more miss fithian of bridgeton n j ; miss fossen of wash ington d c ; misses gray and bardo of bethlehem ; and miss da vis of philadelphia kappa alpha the kappa alpha fraternity is entertaining mrs hearne of wayne ; mrs wylie of pottstown misses wright and stevens of philadel phia misses arlen and culley of new york city ; miss reiley of wayne miss brodbury of ger mantown miss estes of south bethlehem and miss everets of jersey city psi upsilon mrs g c leidy of steelton mrs j h martin of brooklyn misses green and longstreth of philadelphia ; miss es trexler and eckert of allen town miss smyth of pottsville misses white and griffith of johns town miss longstroth of rail way miss pagenstecker of balti more miss jennings of easton and miss macdowell of narberth sigma chi the following are the guests of the sigma chi fraternity mrs continued on fourth page papers of wragg 13 and coll ing 12 on the respective merits of the governing bodies of germany and england supplemented with a talk by professor stewart on com parative data respecting the united states senate combined to form the feature program of the society for the present term wragg 13 on der deutschen bundesrath first attempted to show that the germans had not modelled their re-organized government after the constitution of the united states he said in part — - the bundesrath is the most im portant legislative body the reichstag cannot be called together unless the bundesrath does likewise meet bills must pass the bundes rath then the reichstag and final ly the bundesrath again this last consideration of the bundesrath is called the sanction the liuj desrath can pass ordinances without having to go to the reichstag 1 the paper on the english house of lords by colling 12 was read by the chairman as mr colling was unable to be at the meeting v after a few historical facts then followed data relative to the house of lords the number of its mem bers the importance of the lord high chancellor and the assertion that this body constituted the su preme court of the land an excellent talk was given by prof stewart on the united states senate prof stewart said in short as follows : the senate possesses more power than any similar oody in existance except the bundesrath when a state of fhe german emgjre refuses to do what the imperial gov ernment says the bundesrath can send troops and compel obedience the senate a few years ago in re gard to california's failure to ob serve the treaty with japan did not send troops to enforce it each state has two senators germany has no equality of states but rather the other extreme we always hear more of the senate than we do of the house of representatives be cause the senate is so much more powerful the senate committee on foreign affairs has practically abso lute power concerning all foreign matters the senate must also con firm all presidential appointments prof stewart closed by saying that other countries had copied the u s senate but had never seemed able to make it as efficient as our own the chairman announced that the next meeting would be held at dr drinker's thursday may the twen ty-third the brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pa friday april 26 1912 mining society meets fraternities entertain arts and science meeting tufts o lehigh o vol xix numerous house parties being held during junior week nations compared governing bodies of three great give interesting talks prof richards and dr wherry no 51
