following the usual custom the formal pledging of men into the honorary society of tau beta pi the following men were pledged at the close of the chapel exercises on thursday morning 1911 — john musgrave bley carlton hart chapin daniel charles keefe thomas claude kraemer donald randolph lowry claude calvin messinger othello h schroedl ; vice president e b c goyne ; secretary p flaughton ; treasurer c pettigrew ; class itistorian c wagner c pettigrew was also elected manager of the freshman basket ball team foot-ball dance the practice on wednesday af ternoon was fast and snappy all the men showed good condition and had plenty of ginger the work started with tackling practice on the dummy after which coach reiter sent the men to signal prac tice the scrimmage which fol lowed lasted for an hour in which time the varsity scored twice by some hard playing the scrub also managed to push the ball over the varsity's line for a touchdown all through the scrimmage the fighting spirit of the men was par ticluarly noticeable knox at right half played a good game for the varsity and rinehart was shifted from end to left half where he played well itarwig and price took care of the punting and both showed decided improvement in their work both dobbins and goyne were tried at full-back while fleard and price alternated at quar ter-back for the scrub dunn and moore showed up well at present the varsity men are in good physical condition two men were out of the afternoon's scrimmage kennedy with a bad ankle and bailey with a twisted knee but both are expected to be in shape for saturday's contest outside of this no men have any serious injuries hard practice will continue the rest of the week in preparation for the swarthmore game on saturday and from pres ent indications we shall give swarthmore a big surprise the line-up was as follows : varsity scrub rinehart . . . left end wagner o'gorman left guard . . lazarus reese left tackle . . ackerly wylie centre .... van nort harwig . . right guard . schmidt black right tackle .... bayless r wood . . . right end .... rehf uss lieard .... quarter-back .... moore knox right half cann g wood . left half hart dobbins full-back ..... dunn substitutions : rouse for rine hart downs for wylie vela for flarwig price for heard goyne for dobbins donaldson for g wood rinehart for donaldson the l u orchestra will hold a foot-ball dance in drown hall to morrow evening tickets are 1.00 and may be purchased from flick to manager or any member of the orchestra refreshments will be served and a full attendance is desired on monday work was started by the mcclintic-marshall construc tion company on the construction of gates and other equipment for the locks of the panama canal the amount of this contract which was let several months ago is 5,500 000 the fabrication of the steel required necessitated the installa tion of machinery to the amount of 100,000 and the total amount of steel to be used is 60,000 tons the above is particularly inter esting to lehigh men inasmuch as both mr marshall and mr mc clintic are alumni of the class of 88 and have in their employ a num ber of eehigh men the most recent additions to their force being r i butz to and g a caff all 10 ". the main drawing card of the recent meeting of the american electro-chemical society in chica go was a paper prepared and read by prof j w richards on the hiorth electric crucible steel furnace d jerman 12 has returned to college after his recent illness the brown and white lehigh university sethlehem pa friday october 28 1910 no 10 basket-ball teams have practice vol xviii 1913 and 1914 make ready for smoker to-night in preparation for the sopho more-freshman basket-ball game at the swarthmore smoker this evening the sophs under capt muthart have been practicing con sistently for the past week wed nesday there were 15 men out and a fierce scrimmage was held lasting for an hour and a half in the game the team will prob ably line up as follows : — forwards white and sindell ; centre mut hart capt ; guards cole and rooney other men out are mc cardy thomas fahl shaw mot ter and watrous the freshmen under captain siebecker have also beerr doing some earnest practicing ; their pass ing being especially good and a hard contest is looked for this evening on wednesday afternoon the first track work of the year was at tempted this work consisted only of a short cross-country run at an easy gait over a course about two and a half miles the route lay over south mountain to seiders ville and back by way of the old philadelphia road only ten men reported to captain dawson as follows : smith trotter tremlett herman wells baird rehfuss clewitt austin breis and robb there is a wealth of track ma terial in the freshman class and with the greater part of last year's team still in college there is every indication of a most successful season next spring it remains however for every man to give what is in him and not to hang back when a call for candidates is made as was for wednesday team prepared for to-morrow's game first call for candidates made on wednesday cross country run for track men lehigh ready for swarthmore tau beta pi pledges notice this is our last chance to notify subscribers subscriptions for the brown and white if paid before novem ber 1 will be 1.50 otherwise 2.00 per year these may be mailed to 430 seneca st south bethlehem pa or paid in the brown and white room drown hall wednesday and saturday af ternoons from 2 to 3 o'clock swarthmore smoker to-night all out for a good time and victory .....
