presented : alternat ing currents of high frequency and high voltage as applied in modern medicine by dr h threlkeld-edwards and trans former construction by it c harvey a transformer specialist with the general electric company mr jas b neale a penna mine operator and graduate of yale uni versity will speak in drown hall on sunday evening this will be a good opportunity to get a prac tical business man's viewpoint of welfare and other work for em ployees as he has had valuable ex perience along that line f f trotter jr 11 has re signed as manager of the wrestling team in favor of o li schroedl ml december meet of civil society several interesting papers pre sented on steel structures the civil engineering society held a very interesting and instruct ive meet wednesday dec 7 in the physics lecture room after the secretary's minutes of the preceding meeting were read and approved pres jannus intro duced the first speaker r camp bell 13 who presented some of the unusual difficulties in the haul ing of structural materials for the rush creek viaduct in new york state campbell supplemented his talk by a comprehensive black board sketch showing the two-mile stretch of country from the point of unloading to the site of the via duct on account of the poor roads and bridge washouts caused by the heavy snows enormous dif ficulties were encountered in haul ing the 18 ton plate girders on sleds and wagons and in this job the hauling was the most important feature the next speaker was mr f w cohen of the penna steel co who was the engineer in charge of the erection of the blackwell's island bridge now known as the queens borough bridge which was recent ly completed this immense struc ture runs from 59th st new york over blackwelfs island to brooklyn and is a cantilever bridge although it differs from all canti lever construction 1 it has no supported span 2 it is supported from the top of the tower by rock ing bents the bridge proper is 3724 feet long the manhattan span is 1182 feet while the queens span has a length of 800 feet to realize its size it is only necessary to recall that but three bridges in the world are larger — the williamsburg the brooklyn and the firth of forth bridges the erection of the false work presented one of the greatest prob lems the engineers had to deal with a double traveler was started from one of the piers and by its aid the false work was set in place the traveler alone took two months to erect an interesting fact about the bridge is the enormous amount of time and labor required to paint it mr cohen figured that it would take 450 men working every day three years to finish this job the structure represents a total weight of 65,000 tons after the conclusion of the meet ing jim meyers catered to the in ner man r a wahl to was in town on wednesday an adjourned meeting of the athletic committee was held in drown flail on wednesday it was decided to purchase full equipment for eight members of this year's society takes in eight men faculty members speak the fall initiation of tau beta pi took place on tuesday evening at which time the following men were taken into the society : john m bley carlton it chapin dan iel c keefe thomas c kraemer donald r lowry claude c mes singer othello it schroedl of the senior class and john s herr of the junior class the meeting of the society took place early in the evening in williams hall after which adjournment was taken to saucon hall where a collation was served and several talks given in addition to the active members in attendance profs richards and franklin and o b neisen past president braved the inclement weather g r wood acted as toastmaster and called on prof richards who spoke on the recent trip of the institute of mining en gineers to the panama canal zone prof richards cited many amus ing incidents of the trip and out lined briefly the plan of the canal prof franklin followed and spoke earnestly on intimate matters of the society prof franklin's talk was well received and prom ises to be productive of increased success for tau beta pi the affair was in charge of the following committee social grif fen albright and baumgartner ; in itiation becker dawson and flick electrical society large number of promising can didates have reported basket-ball exceptionally bright was cap tain merkle's comment when asked as to our prospects for the coming season such an opinion from the one who is best able to judge will be most reassuring to the basket ball fans about the university for with swarthmore the navy and state on our schedule things look ed a trifle dubious coach scrap johnson of the bethlehem prep quintette and a well-known follow er of lehigh athletics also predict ed a most successful season r s crump too is enthusiastic and hopes for a record breaking five this year wednesday afternoon the candi dates for the team made their first appearance in the cage about thirty men reported there being plenty of candidates for every po sition accordingly after about half an hour of light floor work captain merkle chose four teams for a short scrimmage the first two teams lined up against each other as follows : merkle forward brady white 13 forward . white 14 shellenberger centre muthart sindel guard price griffith guard cook after about a quarter of an hour of fast work the score was a tie 18-18 muthart showed up ex ceedingly well from the foul mark scoring every one of a possible eight all of the men played con sistently and it will take a great deal of sifting before the five can be selected that is to represent the brown and white this year immediately after the first scrim mage two more teams were chosen and there was another short and ex citing game scrap johnson ref ereed the first contest and was very strict an admirable policy without doubt at this stage of the season captain merkle acted as referee in the second game in addition to those whose names have been mentioned the following are promising candidates : hohl throm rooney mccoy cole o it smith peters siebecker lowen english classes were started among the magyars on tuesday night others will be started in the hear future with
