athletic committee meetlng lecture on famous engineering project before a large and appreciative audience composed of members of the faculty students of the uni versity and townspeople professor j w richards delivered a very in teresting lecture on a trip to panama on wednesday evening in the university chapel prof richards recently visited panama on an inspection trip in company with a party composed mostly of members of the american institute of mining engineers and conse quently had all the most recent de tails of the progress being made on this gigantic task which has been undertaken by the united states government beginning with the eastern end of the canal prof richards de scribed it step by step in its course towards the pacific ocean at the same time illustrating his descrip tions by excellent lantern slides which gave perfect ideas of the progress in the construction of this huge waterway joining the atlantic and pacific he called particular attention to the series of locks describing them in detail altogether there are six double locks three on the atlantic side and three on the pacific side the three on the atlantic side are in a battery and are situated about three miles ; back from the coast they raise tlie water in the canal from sea level to its highest level on the pacific side two double locks are arranged in a battery and the water level is lowered two thirds of the way down to sea level the last double lock is nearer the pacific coast this lock lowers the level of the water in the canal to the sea level in between the locks on the pa cific side is a natural lake which forms part of the canal this lake coming in such a convenient situa tion enables the cost of digging for several miles to be eliminated statistics of the time and cost of construction descriptions of the op erating force necessary and other facts of universal interest were given r it smith 05 r 11 smith 05 was killed sev eral weeks ago at the works of the westinghouse elec & mfg co at east pittsburg he had been as signed the task of reducing the cost of a new invention while in col lege has was president of the elec trical society a member of tau beta pi and a member of the phi sigma kappa fraternity the regular monthly meeting of the lehigh university athletic committee was held in drown hall thursday january sth with the following members present : prof wilson s t harleman r m bird d r lowry g r wood r f wood g m donaldson the members of the sophomore relay team were awarded their nu merals these men are : w se guine l b savastio j w mer cur jr d h le van s b gor man on motion of r m bird and g wood g m donaldson was ap pointed a committee of one to make a full investigation regarding stand ard uniforms and to report at the next regular meeting the treasurer's report fo.r the month of december was accepted and sweaters were awarded to the members of the 1910 foot-ball team receivng their l's senior electricals enjoy instruc tive trip the senior electricals returned ion sunday from an extended in spection trip to new york and schnectady the visit covered a very broad field of engineering and lasted about a week the men ar rived in new york city on mon day evening january 2nd or early on tuesday morning and put up at the hotel marlborough the inspection began on tues day morning with two of the water ! side plants of the new york edi son company and a trip through the metropolitan building from basement to tower that afternoon the party went to the new pennsyl vania station a complete tour was made through the station as well as through the sub-station nearby the a interlocking tower governing the movement of trains i into the station and one of the 4,000 h p electrc locomotives on \ wednesday morning the generating station of the new haven railroad at cos cob conn was visited re turning to new york that after noon they were taken through the houston st exchange of the new york telephone co by three al umni the white star steamers cedric and oceanic as well as the interborough rapid transit power plant occupied thursday that night at 6:00 o'clock the party left for schenectady and fri day and saturday were spent in the general electric works the party was piloted through these by baer 08 and anderson to saturday evening they returned to new york and thence to south bethlehem on friday night they were given a dinner by the northern new york lehigh alumni club at the mohawk golf club schenectady after the dinner short talks were made by alumni faculty and stu dents a bowling contest between alumni and students was won by the former team by a score of 788 to 688 twenty-one alumni were present at the dinner professors esty and seyfert ac companied the party there has been some talk of taking another trip about easter at the 6th annual convention of the pennsylvania state educational association held at harrisburg dec 26 27 28 vice president em ery talked upon rational college kntrance requirements c t gardner ex-to visited col lege last week hon w l saunders advocates votes for women in what was without a doubt one of the most able and convincing speeches before the college students hon w l saunders president of | the ingersoll-rand rock drill co and vice president of the ameri can society of mining engineers championed the female suffrage movement in this country under the title the right and strength of equal suffrage what lent increased interest to the lecture aside from the merits of the argument itself was the sig nificant fact to lehigh's embryo en gineers that another engineer busy as he is with the various problems relating to his profession could have the time and the inclination to delve so deeply into a problem far removed from those of ordinary engineering it is not only a glow ing tribute to his broadmindedness but is or should be a spur to make engineering students take some thing more than a superficial inter { est in the live questions of the day mr saunders opened his address by quoting gov baldwin of mass on this question as expressed in his election message taxation without representation is inconsist ent with the ideals of democracy continuing he said the amazing conduct of the militant suffragettes of england has made men sit up and take notice the work of this propaganda seemed so lawless so unwomanly that the very flagrance of the acts challenged attention why should 600 women in eng land have gone to prison for acts of violence in connection with suf frage many of them refusing to take food while in jail surely it seemed that these women are crazy or that there is real merit at the bottom of their cause not being willing to admit the lunacy of so many intelligent and in many cases titled women mr saunders was attracted to their cause he maintained that the whole question of suffrage is a question of whether we believe in the old barbarian idea of intelligent people and serfs or that all people are created free and equal and he quot ed history to show that the lower woman's position in a country the less the civilization of that country several of the anti-suffragists favorite arguments were refuted by mr saunders they claim he said that women do not know enough about business to vote in telligently this is because women have not been educated in business just as students in the woman suffrage elec inspection at new york albright defeated in well played game on saturday evening the var sity basket-ball team opened its sea son with a victory over the al bright college five by the score of 38 to 21 in spite of their unfa miliarity with the local court the visitors put up their usual fast clean game and fought hard to overcome the commanding lead which good team work gave lehigh in the first few minutes of play albright was unable to score at all until the last few minutes of the first half and when the whistle blew the score was 23 to 4 in favor of lehigh in the second half several sub stitutions weakened the home team and albright raised her total score to twenty-one points schellenber ger merkel and cook excelled for lehigh and kelchner starred for albright
