pleasure in find ing lehigh to be taking a leading stand in one of the most important national questions of the day and he emphasized the fact that the keystone state is also in the van guard of this movement the first views showed different sections of the famous black forest of wur temburg and baden and the enor mous development of forestry con ditions in the whole of germany large portions of this forest have been planted by the government and for that purpose there are many nurseries in germany that are tended as carefully as the most valuable hot-houses from an economic standpoint it was pointed out that forestry is an important factor instances were given where land rented for agri cultral purposes yielded 2.50 an acre and there was even trouble in collecting that whereas when the same land was given over to for estry each acre yielded 10 net over and above expenses one of the pride stands in the black forest was worth 2600 per acre for the timber alone later views showed the well kept roads through german forests which made the forests easily ac cessible the thick growth of well kept forests keeps them flourishing without extra work in that the ex clusion of the sun and wind keeps the ground moist and fertile the views of american forests were shown in such an order that no one could help seeing the enor mous contrast between neglected forests and forests in those parts of the country where some effort had been made to maintain them the forestry question has taken such a hold in portions of the country that nurseries are kept and trees are given away prof roth then spoke a little for the lumbermen who have been se verely criticized for the destruction of some forests whereas the de struction has been due to fire start ed by some slight carelessness the
