cornell wrestlers win close matches the mere statement that cornell | won six out of the seven bouts in a ; dual meet last saturday night at ithaca does not express how evenly the teams were matched and what a game fight each one of the lehigh men put up cornell's team has on it four of last year's inter-collegiate champions and the balance of the men are veterans at the game davies lehigh won from hop kins cornell by forfeit the latter having sprained his ankle after about two minutes of play every one of the bouts resulted in a decision except in the heavy weight class when coft cornell pinned ackerly's lehigh shoul ders to the mat with a hammer lock the 115 pound and the 125 pound bouts were the most closely match ed and the hardest fought bouts of the meet and the decision could only be given after three additional three minute bouts in each case the decisions then being given in cor \ nells favor acknowledgment must be made of the royal and sportsmanlike way in which each member of the team was treated while in ithaca there was a very good attendance at the meet and a great interest was shown the team will meet cornell again in south bethlehem on march 17 and every man white lehigh university south bethlehem pa tuesday february 21 1911 swarthmore wins second game meeting of chemical society lehigh loses to cornell prospects bright for baseball vol xviii no 32 practice to start wednesday with veterans back with but seven weeks to prac tice before the opening game of base-ball with the university of pennsylvania on march 29th at franklin field much interest has been aroused as to the quality of candidates who will try for the va cant positions the l men left from last year's varsity team are : fisher borden rose kempsmith and olsen while martin moore hill and over who took part in games last year are expected to give a good ac count of themselves this year around this nucleus of last year's men coach caldwell expects to build a strong team the schedule that has been ar ranged is one of the hardest that a lehigh team has undertaken for many years nevertheless captain fisher and coach caldwell are op timistic concerning the outcome and expect to end the season with a good record the first call for candidates will be for pitchers and catchers who will be asked to report on wednes day the twenty-second a call for candidates for the infield and out field candidates will be made one week later practices will be held in the cage at present but as this is very un satisfactory coach caldwell will begin field practice as soon as the weather permits he hopes to get two or three weeks of outdoor work accomplished before the opening game much is expected from the freshmen candidates because of their good showing in the fresh man-sophomore game on flound er's day last fall junior oratorical con test swarthmore repeats trick of previous game in a game replete with brilliant plays and most interesting to the large number of spectators the le high varsity five was defeated sat urday afternoon by the caraet in the second game this year the contest took place in the swarth more gymnasium and our boys did exceedingly well in this their sec ond contest in the foreign cage in the first half things started with a rush but at no time during the period did either team succeed in making any exceptional tally the half ended 19 to 14 in swarth more's favor it was in the open ing of the second period that swarthmore with a strong offense was able to score sufficiently to make the game safe towards the end of the contest lehigh again came back strongly muthart at centre doing exceptional work the final score was 35 to 30 merkle at forward played an ex ceptional game for lehigh and muthart who was substituted for shellenberger also did of halves 20 minutes the thi rty-five dropped dr wilson talks on atomic weight determination the chemical society held its monthly meeting last thursday night in saucon hall with a large attendance three very interesting papers were read the first of which was by dr j h wilson on at omic weight determinations dr wilson outlined several distinct methods for determining the atomic weights of elements and laid spe cial emphasis on the method which governs the quantitative determin ations an example of this method is the determination of the atomic weight of magnesium silver chlo ride is precipitated from a solution of magnesium chloride and know ing the amount of magnesium chlo ride taken the amount of silver chloride obtained and the molecular weight of silver chloride the mole cular weight of magnesium chloride can be obtained subtracting from this the atomic weight of chlorine in its proper proportions gives as a result the atomic weight of magne sium by this method the most ac curate results are obtained the pro bability of error being made almost infinitesimal following dr wilson r j hauck 12 read a paper on the open hearth process which he illustrated by blackboard sketches the modern open hearth steel fur nace was described in detail and statistics were given as to the quan tities of material necessary for op eration the output the cost of op eration qualities of the product and the profits w b krause 13 read a jour nal report on the guayule rubber plant a product of northern mexico rubber is obtained from the plant by mascerating the leaves and boiling them in large quanitties of water the rubber comes to the surface in the form of a scum is skimmed off and marketed in conclusion the society enjoyed a good feed the actual number of men dropped for failure in scholarship at the end of the term just closed was freshmen 16 sophomores 5 juniors 6 seniors b—being8 — being 35 in all — or about 5 per cent of the student body thirty-six men were placed on probation an erroneous report somehow was circulated that the dropped men amounted to ninety continued on fourth page the annual junior oratorical contest at lehigh university for prizes of 25 15 and 10 offered by the alumni association will be held in the packer memorial church on wednesdaay morning february 22nd at 11 o'clock ora tions will be delivered by the fol lowing
