team starts with four veterans and many candidates lacrosse practice was started in the cage on last saturday and while it is too early to make prophesies : concerning the coming season some idea of what we can expect can be made of last year's team only four men are left capt dunn mccoy donaldson and kennedy there are however a number of men who showed well last year of whom much can be expected this year these are williams hart wheaton speed fairhurst carson and lincoln all of these men played in a number of games and if promise holds good will be var sity men this year mr breyer an old hopkins star has kindly consented to coach the team on saturdays and such times as it is possible for him to do so j on march 15th coach crowell will take regular charge of the team practice will be held in the cage every afternoon at three o'clock ex cept on wednesday and saturday afternoons when practice will start at two o'clock lehigh gymnasts lose to quakers by score of 43-11 lehigh gymnasts journeyed to philadelphia on saturday to meet the university of pennsylvania team the meet resulted in victory for the latter by the score of 43-11 and while lehigh took only one first place this was due more to the fact that it was her first meet of the season perm has a veteran team that have already secured several victories this season pennsylvania was somewhat handicapped by capt kelley's in juries which prevented his en trance in the tumbling event this however was offset by bad luck en countered by capt bley and an in jured wrist that kept jannus from the parallel bars the meet was fairly well attend ed and the various events closely contested kelley starred for perm taking first place and tieing with graham for another jannus did well on the rings and bailey showed excellent form in tumbling taken all in all we can look forth to a happy outcome of the meet with rutgers on next saturday the score : — parallel bars :— kelley u of p ist heap u of p 2nd erb u of p 3rd i lorizontal bars : — graham u of p and kelley u of p tied for ist heap u of p 3rd side morse — lawton u of p ist brinton u of p 2nd flick l 3rd club swinging — brinton u of p ist schmidt u of p 2nd kester l 3rd flying rings — jannus l ist hackett u of p 2nd heap u of p 3rd tumbling — perkins u of p ist bailey l 2nd pettegrew u of p 3rd judges dr chadwick mr friedgen and dr noble important college meeting resolutions passed on mrs pal mer's death on friday morning a college meeting was held the object of which was to pass resolutions of condolence and sympathy on the | death of mrs palmer these reso ! lutions appear on another page there were present at the meet ing dr drinker and dr estes dr drinker spoke on his recent trips ! occasioned by university work and upon the athletic situation re garding this last he read a letter he j had just received telling of a res cue of two persons from drowning by mr 11 r reiter dr drinker closed his talk by a few remarks on j good living for college men and in these he was substantiated by dr estes who talked at some length on the subject following the talks by the presi dent and dr estes . the college | passed the resolution embodied be low : the junior committee whose duty it shall be to render assistance to the athletic teams of lehigh uni versity shall consist of the presi j dent of the junior class assistant manager of the foot-ball team as sistant manager of the base-ball team assistant manager of the la crosse team and the student head waiter at the commons in case | any two or more of these offices ; are held by one man the committee : ! shall hold an election from mem bers of the junior class to make the number on the committee equal to five organization of the commit tee shall be effected by the commit ! tee and there shall be one officer j who shall be chairman and secre tary manager spooner of the base ball team issued a call for candi ; dates for assistant managers for that team as did m i terwilliger for the lacrosse team h h otto ! urged the subscription to the epitome and the patronage of ad vertisers in the college publications a priestly and o 11 schroedl spoke respectively on mustard and cheese and wrestling j ( following the college meeting j i the senior and junior classes held 1 short class meetings dinner of the n y lehigh club the beefsteak party of the le high university club of greater new york held last friday even ing at the machinery club was one of the most interesting and success ful ever given the affair was purely informal and was thorough ly enjoyed by the one hundred or more alumni present after the dinner thaddeus merriman 97 gave a very pleasing talk on the catskill water supply illustrating i the same with lantern slides mr \ merriman is the assistant to the chief engineer of the board of water supply and was therefore quite familiar with his topic after this k b honeyman 88 presi dent of the society called upon a number of guests who responded in general upon the interests and welfare of the university all the members are looking forward with great anticipation to the annual formal dinner to be given on the 24th of next month track practice lehigh swamps susquehanna in last basket-ball game in the final game of the season our quintette succeeded in van quishing the susquehanna repre sentative five saturday evening by the decisive score of 53-23 a large crowd witnessed the contest and there was plenty of excitement all the time notwithstanding the large score coach dr white had anticipated a much harder game state having beaten the susquehanna five by but one point in a recent contest more over shellenberger was called out of town and capt merkle who has been confined to his room be cause of sickness since the return of the team from state was like wise unable to play as a result a k white took merkle's place at forward p j white played the other forward in place of muthart who was switched to centre in spite of the greatly altered line-up the brown and white five played su perbly their passing being one of the features at no time during the contest did susquehanna look dangerous in the second period price and shulz were substituted for a k white and cole respectively and both men did excellent work lehigh's offense was featured by the work of p j white who se cured ten pretty baskets from the field in the defense the work of cole was a weighty factor kauff man their husky centre featured for the visitors scoring all but six of their points the line-up follows : susquehanna lehigh aikens forward a k white price crawford . forward p j white kauffman . . . centre muthart richards guard cole schulz treglown . . guard cook field goals kauffman 3 craw ford aikens treglown p j white 10 a k white 4 muthart 4 price 4 cook cole foul goals muthart 5 kauffman 11 referee c e bilheimer timekeepers da vis lehigh smith susquehanna time 20 minute halves final score susquehanna 23 lehigh 53 state 34 lehigh 13 dyer smith 03 i her smith 03 a past editor of the brown and white has re signed his position at the edison works in orange x j and has opened an office as patent-attorney in the u s express building 2 rector st new york city lehigh met defeat at the hands of perm state on washington's birthday by the score of 34-13 c p lawson ex-to visited bethlehem last week seniors notice at a meeting of the class book committee recently held it was de cided that all ballots pictures and deposits must be in the hands of the committee no later than march 11 all seniors not meeting this requirement will be barred from having a place in the book this notice is final ballots may be left in the box in the supply bureau drown flail or handed to any member of the com mittee if pictures have beer taken by local photographers they must be ready by march 11 and will be obtained by the committee other wise they must be turned in with ballots there will be track team practice at 3:15 p m wednesday and 2:30 saturday afternoon dr drinker attended the dinner given to retiring provost harris and incoming provost smith of the university of penna at phila delphia on last wednesday the brown and white lehigh university vol xviii no 34 south bethlehem pa tuesday february 28 1911 u of pa wins from lehigh lacrosse team starts practice season ends with victory
