the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa friday april 7 1911 no 45 epitome on sale tomorrow " panama canal will pay lehigh loses at lacrosse vol xviii mechanicals april meeting interesting talk on belt con veyors the april meeting of the me chanical engineering society was held tuesday evening in the phys ics laboratory owing to the in clement weather the attendance was poor but those present were treated to one of the best addresses of the year by c k baldwin 95 of the robins belt conveyor co the speaker showed the develop ment of methods of conveying ma terial sketched the evolution of conveyor systems and showed the construction of the modern belt and pulley the belts are made of canvas duck covered with rubber and re ; cently a remarkable improvement has been made to them by inserting in the center a very loosely woven fabric to which the rubber takes hold the speaker showed a large number of conveyor installations bringing out the varying conditions of service and engineering prob lems encountered in special cases and emphasizing the great flexibil ity of a belt conveyor system as compared to any other kind the largest conveyor that has been built has a capacity of 1500 tons of coal per hour and has a length of 5000 feet mr baldwin also spoke of the many types of feeders each of which has its application in some special industry a large portion of mr bald win's address was taken from a paper read by him before the am erican society of mechanical en gineers and it was made particu larly interesting by the large num ber of lantern slides he showed as a fitting conclusion to a most pleas ant evening the society enjoyed a delightful feed electrical society meeting the regular monthly meeting of | the electrical society will be held in the physics lecture room on monday evening april 10 at 7:30 o'clock special attention is called to this change of date due to the holidays c b clawson 06 will talk on modern telephony mr claw son is supervisor of the new york telephone co and the talk prom ises to be interesting f r fishback of the electrical i controlling and manufacturing co of cleveland 0 will talk on con trolling apparatus a discussion of finance and electrical engin eering by s d gladding 11 will conclude the literary program after which the customary feed will be served announcement of prizes awarded character of book outlined unless unforseen circumstances arise the cloth bound copies of the 1912 epitome will be put on sale at the supply bureau tomorrow morning and the leather bound copies on monday morning april 10th until tuesday noon only those who have ordered cloth j bound copies can obtain them at the bureau ; after that time the remain j ing copies will be sold regardless of subscriptions it is therefore urged that the men who subscribed for cloth bound copies call for them before tuesday noon in order that there may be no disappointment on their part this arrangement does not apply to leather bound copies ; these of course are sold on sub scription only and will be held by the supply bureau until a reason able length of time after the close j of the easter recess the book this year is bound in a handsome shade of dark green with a gold finish the cover de sign is by guth 12 inasmuch as the epitome is es sentially a book of record appear ing annually it was deemed advis able to adhere to the same general layout that has been followed in previous issues numerous minor changes however have been made which it is hoped will add interest to the publication the board was fortunate in being able to secure a large collection of neat drawings and interesting photographs which help to make the book attractive the fraternity section has been en larged the dormitory section im proved and the athletic section completely revised the book contains a fairly dis tinct picture of the foot-ball din ner held in december some new campus news and six good party night pictures procured at the dormitories early in the year among the articles of interest there will be found an article on tau beta pi and under the head of why did you choose lehigh what we believe to be the first pub lished summary of the returns from dr drinker's letter sent out to the undergraduates during the first term at the last meeting of the board the following prizes were awarded : three 5.00 prizes for excellence of artistic work in the order named to hoffman 14 carpenter 13 and snyder 12 bleiler 14 one cloth bound book guth 12 was awarded a leather bound copy of the book for the cover design prof mckibben addresses civils at april meeting a large and appreciative body of students greeted the speakers at the next to the last civil engineering society meeting of the college year after the usual order of business nominations were made for next year's officers and these will be voted on at the may meeting o h schroedl 11 opened with a paper on electrolytic corro sion which he discussed very thoroughly he explained the three different theories of corrosion and stated that the electrolytic theory is the accepted one a common form of corrosion is where two electrodes with an electrolyte be tween them create a current which carries metal particles away from the anode the same action occur ring in an electrolytic cell water is usually the electrolyte in the tests performed to deter ' mine the effects of corrosion two standard steel i be?ms thorough ly cleaned of scale were encased in concrete which had been made a conductor by the addition of salt these were buried in the ground along with two similar beams with out the casing direct and alternat ing currents about 4 ampere were passed through them on remov al at the end of 44 days the beams through which direct current had been passed were found to be thickly incrusted with scale at the point where the current left the beams ; where concrete casings were used the beams were cracked and in generally poor condition alternating currant showed no bad effects as would be expected the results obtained from these tests were startling enougn to war rant action being taken to safe guard construction work from the effects of corrosion prof mckibben's talk on the panama canal came as a fitting sequel to the previous talk by prof richards on the same topic and it was a lucid and forceful portrayal of present day conditions on the big ditch prof mckibben first gave a brief history of the subject stating that panama is more widely known than any country to the south of us outside of mexico both as a re sult of the spanish discoveries and on account of the rush of the gold settlers to california by this route one very interesting phase of the situation is that after 1913 the unit ed states must pay 250,000 a year rental to panama and in 1966 the land in colon which now can only indians capture first game of season by score of 7 to 1 on a field covered with mud and swept with a driving rain the la crosse team lost its first game of the season on wednesday after noon when the carlisle indians piled up six tallies in the second half of the game and won by a score of 7 to 1 both teams started off with a rush and for fifteen minutes the play was even and then by skillful passing the ball was given to f b speed and the out-home netted the ball for the first goal of the season a few minutes later crane car lisle's fast in home slipped one over on the lehigh defense and tied the score the remainder of the half passed without further scor ing although there were several at tempts in the second half the redskins came bock strong they changed their style of attack and by con sistent efforts managed to score goal after goal the lehigh defense made sever al attempts to get the ball in car lisle territory and keep it there but they were unable to do so this style of play continued until the end of the half when the whistle blew with the score 7 to 1 in car lisle's favor owing to the muddy condition of the field the game was replete with comical and frequently ridiculous spills no one was more seriously injured from this source however than receiving a good coating of mud an especial feature of the game was the excellent goal-tending of hart the line-up : lehigh carlisle mccoy in home crane f b speed out home clut williams . . . first attack .... jocks i jay second attack . sundown dunn third attack . . garlow wheaton center . young deer f r speed third defense . . arcasa davies . second defense . l john raynor ... first defense . bracklin carson .... cover point .... jordan kennedy point jacobs hart goal o john referee dr irwin montreal ! goals lehigh f b speed car ! lisle jocks 3 sundown 2 crane young deer goal judges don aldson lehigh large carlisle 30 minute halves elections for the captaincy of the gym team were held recently and bailey 12 was elected to the position continued on third page
