game — lehigh vs ursinus on lehigh field saturday october 9 at 3 p m christian association — meet ing in drown hall sunday october 10 at 6.30 p m bishop talbot will speak football baseball and track football at the call of captain smith of of the freshman football team a large number of candidates appear ed on the field last week and have been holding daily practice there has been enough men for two teams and as a result the freshmen expect to have a good representation on the girdiron on founder's day among some of the candidates are the following — smith captain campbell dv lot young matthews dnnbar horcasitas eyder griffen hauser groft fall gery cooke mont gomery cole mark dugan van nort haines messenger o'brien muthart schmidt sigle senker and kelley baseball during the past week a goodly number of candidates have been hard at work each day in practice for the coming sports on founder's day twenty candidates have reported to captain saline and from this number a strong team will no doubt be developed several preparatory-school stars have en tered the university this fall and these will form a nucleus for a strong aggregation to face the sophomores next week track in track captain levan has been hard at work with about a dozen candidates here also some fast men have furnished very promising material for a good re lay team sophomore athletics football franklin and marshall 10 lehigh 0 lehigh was defeated in the sec ond game of the season by the fast franklin and marshall team on lehigh field saturday afternoon the score being i to 0 the loss of the game which was a big sur prise and disappointment to lehigh men was mainly the result of costly fumbles and lack of the classy head work which in former games has marked the playing of our team from the first kick-off it was evident that lehigh would have to play every minute to win the game and for a while it looked as if a touchdown was soon to come but a fumble spoiled the chances and when lehigh recovered the ball again franklin and marshall was playing dangerously close to our goal then followed a punting duel between richards and martin with honors even lehigh's costly errors in catching the punts again gave franklin and marshall the opportunity of advancing the ball to about the twenty-yard line a field goal was then tried but was spoiled by a poor pass and the first half ended 0-0 in the second half lehigh by repeated line plunges and short end runs succeeded in working the ball to franklin and marshall's forty-five yard line but another fumble gave the ball to franklin and marshall with a clear field for a touchdown saylor failed to kick goal franklin and marshall's second touchdown was made after another fumble had given them the ball on lehigh's twenty-yard line from where they scored on a well executed forward pass saylor again failed to kick an easy goal lehigh then took a brace but they only succeeded in getting the ball on franklin and marshall's fifteen-yard line when time was called and the final score stood 10-0 lehigh's line was strong and had no trouble in holding their oppo nents who depended on their ends and punting to advance the ball franklin and hall was the scene of the second college meeting of the year on fri day october the first dr drinker was introduced by president treat and was roundly applauded as he rose to speak in part dr drinker said that he came before the student body not in the capacity of his office as presi dent of the university but as an alumnus of lehigh and such he wished to be considered the kindly feeling between the student body and the faculty that has ex isted since he has been head of this institution he wished would con tinue also the friendship that has been evidenced between the stu dents and the people of theßethle hems he also wished would prosper in the same measure as it has in the past dr drinker also made passing comment on the recent rush between the lower classes expressing his appreciation of the inevitable riv alry between sophomores and freshmen but wishing that further expression show itself outside of college buildings in the course of his talk the president also told of a plan to procure a new piano for drown hall through the profits of of the ben greet performances and with the co-operation of the arcadia and musical association in closing dr drinker reiterated again that which stands nearest to his heart his love for lehigh and his endeavor to be of assistance to anyone who may need his help although his absence from bethle hem is frequently required by his college duties among the alumni he always stands ready to be of aid personally when he is able to do so or through his able aides mr emery and prof thornbu rg particularly is dr drinker anxious to have every case of sickness among stu dents reported to him and especial ly upon the freshmen he is con cerned to have this fact impressed dr drinker's talk was listened to intently by all and at the close the three lehighv led by treat showed the love and esteem with which the president of this college is held by the students following dr drinker's address treat talked on the football situa coti tin ued on fourth page founder's day the annual celebration of founder's day at lehigh univer sity will be observed on october 14th the address of the day will be given in the packer memorial church at 11 a m by the hon joseph buffington judge of the united states circuit court lor the third ctirouit judge buffington was graduated from trinity college hartford conn with the degree of a.b in 1875 he was admitted to the bar in 1887 and practiced law at kittannine pa from that date to 1893 when he became judge of the united states district court of the western district pennsylvania lie served in this capacity until 1906 when he was appointed judge of the united states circuit court for the third circuit 11 j jackson 08 saw the | franklin and marshall game with the idea of winning the majority if not all of the foun der's day sports the sophomores have turned out in large numbers to try for the different teams every day a large squad of base ball and football men have re ported for practice while those interested in the track meet have been training just as hard the outlook cor this event is very promising as the five men who ran oh last year's relay are all in college and hope this year
