:—: — on behalf of the local committee arranging for suitabe commemoration of the discovery of america by columbus in 1402 the undersigned respectfully invites you to participate in the ceremonies of that date's anniversary which has been declared a legal holiday in this and many other states namely october 12th you are respectfully urged to attend a solemn high mass at 9 a.m on october 12th 1909 at the church of the holy infancy and also to attend the public meet ing to be held on the evening of same day in grand opera house at which among the speakers will be mr chas m schwab your honored president and others with whom you are very closely allied the meeting in the evening will be entirely non-partisan and will undoubtedly be one of the most refined and highly educational entertainments ever held in this locality on any similar occasions trusting to be honored with a large attendance of your members at both affairs and assuring you of our best wishes for your continued e.m good season expected although college has been in session but two weeks work has been begun by the several musical organizations that represent the university and this action bespeaks of a successful season in this line of activity last saturday a call was made for candidates for the glee club and mandolin club and as a result about two dozen men appeared in drown hall for the former and a slightly less number for the latter among these was a large proportion of last season's perfdrmers and the remainder was made up of some first year men especial interest is manifest at this time in the musical clubs from the fact that a concert will probably be given early in december and plans are even now on foot whereby an extended trip may be taken during the thanksgiving holidays the first call for candidates for this season's minstrel show will be made shortly after founder's day when regular rehearsals will be held each week in an effort to make the production even better than it has been in past years .». founder's day hop preparations are nearly com pleted for the hop on next wed nesday night and at the present i time it promises to be one of the most successful ever held music will be furnished by an orchestra which makes a specialty of dance music the hall will be decorated with banners and palms exactly as at the spring dances and refresh ments will be served by a reliable caterer the committe is doing every thing possible to make the evening a pleasant one and as this is the one social function during the first months of the college year it de serves the support of the student body tickets are for sale by any member of the committee -«► drown hall meeting it is with great pleasure that the oh ristian association announces that bishop talbot will address the evening meeting this coming sun day the older men at lehigh know of bishop talbot's reputation as a speaker but for the benefit of [ the new men it may be said that a rare intellectual treat is in store for all who propose to be present at this meeting first of the year the initial meeting of the civil society was held wednesday eve ning in saucon hall president van blarcom partially outlined the work for the coming year and asked particularly for suggestions as to varying the social end of the meetings it was decided to offer the usual prize of 5.00 for the best poster drawn during the year the first speaker of the evening was dr hall who gave an extremely interesting talk on the yale summer school in forestry dr hall entered into the methods of instruction environments and location of what is probably the largest and best forestry school in the country in closing he paid special tribute to gifford pinchor on whose estate the school is located not only for the work he is doing for the country at the present time but also for his own personality prof mckibben was next intro duced and he started by reviewing the methods of instruction in the different testing laboratories lead ing up to what is foremost in the minds of most lehigh men at present namely the fritz testing laboratory prof mckibben entered minutely into the con struction of the new building as well as into the particular ad vantages to be derived from it by all civil engineering students he said that with the exception of some maintained by the govern ment it will be without doubt the best equipped laboratory of its kind in the country some idea of its size was gained when he stated that a two horse team with a 30 foot girder could be driven into it with ease a large electric travel ing crane will run the entire length of the building giving access to all parts the society then adjourned to the room where a sumptuous repast had been prepared by chef myers after
